Why is this happening?

How about the shooting when cameras were setting up for the George Floyd anniversary event.

I have been warning that this will happen. It is a combination of factors. However, I believe one of the biggest factors is bail reform. This essentially lets out all defendants except for the most violent like murders and rapists while awaiting trial. There has not been a time where more people that have been arrested and awaiting trial and on the streets than now. This is a very big factor. It certainly is a factor in NJ and NY.

Second, in NJ, it is about to get worse. NJ has got rid if mandatory minimums for “non-violent” offenders. Mandatory time is when a drug dealer is convicted for a third degree crime at trial, he would get a five year sentence but would also get a 3 year minimum parole disqualifier. So he had to spend actual 3 years in jail. Now that same guy wil do maybe a year. This is also a trend across the country. While some drug penalties needed to be reformed like getting rid of 1000ft drug zones, NJ made it a revolving door for drug dealers. Get arrested and out the door on bail reform. This a return to the late 80’s when drug dealers would get arrested and then be back on the streets. Even the head of a narcotic organization does not get a mandatory time in prison. So El Chapo gets a 20 year sentence but what that really means is that he only does 6-7 years in jail before getting released.

Also, anyone who was convicted of a drug offense and had mandatory time, will be getting released. This is just bad policy and bad for the citizens of NJ.

Last thing is that police have been a punching bag for the past couple of years. This affects their work and the quality of their enforcement. The far left needs to stop this campaign of defunding police which will never go anywhere. But also this attempt to get rid of qualified immunity.

its so easy to see how the defund the police movement will instantly backfire against those pursuing it most

And the democrat da just won the primary in a landslide. Nothing will change

Spoke to a couple of retired LEO’s. Lots of theories but no data.
- Proactive policing pull back and LEO’s are responding slower (as a result of rhetoric and personal exposure). Several cities are reporting much lower arrest rates.
- COVID related. Teens not in school, rather out on the streets.
- Continued breakdown of family unit.
- Drug use increasing.
- People feel emboldened by anti-police rhetoric.
- Bail reform.

it’s funny that Cuomo and Deblasio are having a pissing contest over how bad the crime is, but neither seems to have any plan to deal with it. But we can honor George Floyd…

Many politicians are more worried about the X number of people across the country who will get handcuffed improperly as opposed to the 500X lives that will be saved from proactive policing.

FYI bail reform in NJ was done by Republican Chris Christe
Agree, this is a community and state issue and while Democratic policies have driven much of this, the Republicans have had their share of bad decisions as well.

Anyone find it odd that with the recent surge in mass shootings (another one yesterday in San Jose) and the rash of gun violence and deaths in major cities, that there has been rhetoric, but very little proposed actions or legislation by Biden and the Democrats? They always blame the other side, but they have complete control now. Why the silence?

Was there silence or were there “thoughts and prayers”?

For the most part those are state issues not federal.
