Why we will never be elite...

First off those refs were freaking awful. We committed some bad fouls but they were calling everything so tight. It was a joke.

But yes free throw shooting was a problem.

Villanova got way too many offensive rebounds

And our best guards were in foul trouble.

We don't box out. If we shot perfect from the line we wouldn't have won. Teams as athletic as Nova you have to be fundamentally sound to beat them. That's where we lost the game not the line.

we don't shoot free throws well and we don't box out on rebounds. Our poor rebounding gets masked because our guys are pretty athletic and hustle. unfortunately there is a lot more to rebounding than that.

Every time we got it close, touch fouls were called. But yes, we MUST hit our free throws. Nova sure does.....granted they have a lot of practice.

We have to have finish the lay ups - we clenched up on so many. .

But though we lost I thought we gave it a good shot.

Need scorers. Maybe we're a year away.

Poise around the rim is a problem for us at times. We rush. That will improve with experience.

I agree that the refs were atrocious. Nova got a great whistle. Ochefu is a baby.

We will be good once these kids mature. Potentially next year. But we won't be elite unless we learn the fundamentals.

We are young. If we can keep the dreaded chemistry issues at bay, I like where this program is headed. We have already addressed our two biggest weaknesses for next year (point play and 3 pt shooting).

We were 21 for 59 and Nova was 21 for 58. We hit 15 fouls shoots and they hit 26.

Do you mean I W back at point and Powell as the shooter?

I'm not sure we can be elite until we have a true Center. Look at the great SHU teams of
all time, Dukes, Bryant, Ramos, Luther, & Sammy D. We've had hybrid players in that
spot with some success, but it's never a complete player.

Stop blaming the officials.

You must be comparing angel to the upperclassmen ramos. Angel is significantly better that the sophs ramos I remember. We missed fts. We got clobbered on the boards, and we didn't get a great whistle.

We defended all night and stayed together. I hate losing, but progress is occurring.

That's where we lost the game - and the free throw line. Absolutely no boxing out. Nova was +9 on second chances and +11 on free throws. We also need a zone buster - Veer? Whitehead got some good looks when Gordon handled the point. Can't shoot 55 percent from the line in any game and hope to win close games.

Kids played hard, but fundamentals were lacking when it counted.

lol @ anyone who tries to give the refs a free pass. They stunk tonight no way to put it.

We committed some dumb fouls too. Carrington and Whitehead have to understand that they need to be careful they are way too valuable to the team to be committing stupid fouls.

We just don't have the depth. When they got it going together is when we made our comeback. Then the fouls started piling up.

The boxing out sucked and yes we can shoot better from the free throw line. Desi went from shooting 9 from 10 to regressing to last year.

Sanogo can't hit a free throw. Delgado is not a good free throw shooter. But when Gordon and Whitehead are constantly attacking the rim drawing contact and not getting calls and then they call touch fouls on the other hand i don't know exactly how you expect a fan ro react. We got a horrible whistle tonight

We weren't going to win tonight but is there a worse ref in college basketball than Pat Driscoll. Every time he refs a game there are so many garbage calls by him or someone in his crew. Nauseating.

15-25 from the line does not get it done. Villanova by contrast was 26-32 from the line. In tight games, free throws will be the difference. When it was time to cut that lead from 8 to 6 or from 6 to 4, and we miss free throws. That is painful. Changes the dynamic of the game. I agree with the sentiment of the original poster, until this team learns how to shoot free throws on a consistent basis, this team is doomed to lose all the close tough games.

This was an ugly game, but the team played tough and hard. our big guys should look at Ochefu and how he shoots free throws. The guy was 8-10 from the line. Can't give up easy points.

We lost to a team that was more experienced, more fundamentally sound, had a better head coach and has a high level of talent on its roster. Like other posters have commented I would love to see SH have that legitimate center and improve its free throw shooting .

That is very accurate about rebounding in last night's game. There were times when Ochfeu was the only player crashing the boards for VU and against 2 or 3 even if he didn't get the rebound he tapped it back out for them to control.

Pat Driscoll is garbage. I have nicknamed him super cuts because of his bowl haircut in the beginning, but since he changed it up I have to change his nickname. The problem is everything I want to call him can't be said in public. Maybe I will just call him the garbage man.

Free throws absolutely make a difference. We beat Marquette handily because we were strong at the line and did other things well too. To beat very good teams we need to shoot better from the FT line especially with the new rules and with our strengths as a team that can get to the rim. Our progress in this area needs to improve.

So far this year our best FT shooters are IW (.739), Carrington (.733), Desi (.712) and Anderson who does not play much (.800). We have no elite FT shooters (80% or better) and the story for other teams should be to foul our bigs and not let any easy shots from them. Their foul shooting is bad so far. Angel (.520), Ish (.533), Nzei (.577). Gordon is an outlier but so far disappointing from the line at (.615). If we shoot better last night the game is definitely closer.

The key to our team is also rebounding and last night we were outrebounded and gave up too many 2nd shots. That and the FTs were the keys to the game.

Teams (and fans of teams) that shoot that poorly from the free-throw line do not get to blame officiating for anything. I don't think they called a sharp game, but it wasn't why we lost, and it also wasn't as one-sided as the losers' lament chorus would depict it.

One thing they did really blow was the second foul on Whitehead. Arcidiacono was driving along the baseline and clearly stepped out of bounds before being fouled by Whitehead. I had a great perspective, as the baseline would have gone right through me if it stretched into my section, and Arch's foot was more our of bounds than in. He missed the FT, but Whitehead wound up fouling out in a physical game. That hurt, but again, we didn't do a single thing to capitalize on the beneficence of the officiating when it swung our way.

The only time we got the benefit of some calls was when Nova had a comfortable lead toward the end, but up until that point many of our players were fouled going to the basket with no call and we were called for every touch foul. When we cut the lead to 2 pts with 11 mins left, was when they called the fouls on Whitehead and Carrington who both were starting to get buckets and we had serious momentum. We do not get the benefit of the calls at home.

I actually thought they let us play some extremely physical defense on the inside for the vast majority of the game.

If you can tell me where Mr. Bean was last night it might explain who I saw refereeing last night game. See: http://media.gettyimages.com/photos...-big-east-mens-basketball-picture-id480887385
Similarities as well as call selection is astonishing similar.

Would also add that we rarely beat anybody that is good in the conference on the road either (too early to tell how good a road win vs. Marquette is going to be). It's been like that for over a decade now. Need to win 1 or 2 of these games this season vs. the top half of the league. Moral victories go so far.

Boxing out is a thing we haven't done well all year. I was hopeful with Ish now playing more minutes that he would be taught how to box out. Nova was hitting the box with at least 4 players each time the ball went up and we weren't keeping them out. Even little Ryan Arch was pushing more than anyone should be allowed to underneath the boards but he was getting away with it and therefore accounted for at least 8 points off offensive turnovers. Please coaches please teach them to BOX OUT !!

This group of kids could be elite and a team nobody wants to face if they fix the boxing out issue.
