I've gone back and forth on this guy over the last few years. I don't buy this whole thing around him doing his best coaching when no one is expecting much. At this point, that whole premise shouldn't be relevant. We should be expecting much, especially when we're now paying our HC at the level that Jay Wright was making when he won the NC back in 2016.
That outright admission of lack of prep is just unacceptable, and I'm not talking about the statement itself. How can you not have your team fired up emotionally to go in that type of environment given the history of a rivalry plus the sense of urgency that you can't lose that game?
Plus, our recruiting or lack there of should be a major concern. We have a bunch of nice role players on this team with the obvious exception of Powell, and maybe Mamu. The sum or those parts minus Powell is bottom half of the Big East team.
With the money Willard is making now, not expecting a consistent level of prep and performance is settling. Let's not settle, let's not allow the administration to settle. I reached into my pocket and donated more to PB. I reached into my pocket and bought plenty of tickets beyond my season tickets. I'll always support the program/University, but I don't want highly paid administrators to think that it's OK if SHU doesn't do that well.
Let's raise the bar for ourselves at this point. Shoot high. We know we're not Duke. We know we don't have a state of the art practice facility. But that doesn't mean we should settle for anything less but the very best we can be.
