Stony Brook N.Y. – The Seton Hall softball team wrapped up its five-game road swing on Wednesday afternoon, dropping a non-conference contest to Stony Brook by a final score of 4-1. The loss snaps the Pirates' five-game winning streak and is just the team's second loss over its last 11 games.
How it Happened
After a perfect first inning, Shelby Smith (Friendswood, Texas) found herself in some trouble in the second. With just one runner on and two outs, the Seawolves put back-to-back runners on to load the bases. Smith was able to dig deep and get the strikeout to strand the bases loaded and keep the game scoreless.
The Pirates would come up the next half inning and take the lead. Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double, and pinch runner Marisa Pla (San Clemente, Calif.) advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Pla would come home on an RBI groundout by Hannah Alexander (Wrightstown, N.J.) to give Seton Hall a 1-0 lead.
The Seawolves' bats would come to life over the next three innings, scoring four unanswered to surge ahead. Catherine Anne Kupinski would double home the tying run in the third, while Naiah Ackerman would put Stony Brook in front in the fourth with an RBI single. In the fifth, Kupinski knocked one over the wall for a two-run homer to make it a 4-1 game.
Notes & Numbers
- Abby Wingo (Portland, Ore.) led off the seventh inning with a single to left field, giving her a career-best 12-game hitting streak.
- Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) picked up her eighth multi-hit game of the season.
- Alexander has now knocked in a run in five of her last six games.
- Smith now sits eight strikeouts away from 300 for her career. She would become the seventh Pirate pitcher ever to reach that milestone.
The Pirates return home this weekend to continue BIG EAST play against St. John's, who comes to town for a three-game series beginning on Friday at 2 p.m.
