We were there. Team simply missed countless open shots and put backs. We should have taken this one by 20. It was frustrating from jump street. To his credit, Tony clawed for every edge to keep them in it.

No one looked wrong. Did not see bad vibe. Just the biggest lid on a basket I can remember.

My view of this game is maybe a bit more critical. I see and have seen a lot of one on one play by
this team in the last several games. Also they are not going for rebounds with an all out effort.

The starters are not playing with focus and that doesn't allow for a margin of error. Consequently, they
end up playing more minutes because Tony doesn't want the game to get away. This team is meant
to wear out opponents with pace and a relentless wave of SHU players. Right now we are trying to play at a
halfcourt pace and just like the Men's team they revert to bailout attempts. Where the hell is all the passing that we've become accustomed to? Dribble, Dribble and more one on one play? I could watch the men to see that. Villanova had the Pirates playing a Nova game. 18 points in the 1st half? They used to have 18 points in 5 minutes.

They are playing themselves right out of an at large bid. DePaul, SJU and Nova are good teams and well coached so we have to be fair, but being down to DePaul by 32 at home?? It's that SHU curse of being ranked. Read the press clippings and relax??? Sorry they should be better than this.

They really looked terrible on offense for all the reasons you identified but their defense was pretty good except for a few lapses. They have definitely lost their mojo. The whole basketball program -both men and women-seems to be in a downward spiral.

Up big in 1st, totally dominated in 2nd period. Tied. After 3rd. 3pt shoot did SH in. Think The Nova shot 30% overall for the game, but 10/30 from the 3. SH percentage wasn't much better and only took like 11 from the 3.

Double double by Richardson Smith (20/11) by the end of the 3rd period. Last 5 minutes of the 4th were awful way to finish. Disappointing

Also, Chuck, we are coming to the lunch. Two seats. Will write in email.

VILLANOVA, Pa. – The Seton Hall women’s basketball team dropped a defensive slugfest at Villanova by a score of 55-45 on Friday night at The Pavilion. The Pirates (13-4, 3-3 BIG EAST) got a 20-point, 12-rebound double-double from Tabatha Richardson-Smith in the setback as the senior moved into the top-five on the Seton Hall all-time scoring list.

The 100 combined points mark the lowest in a game for the Pirates this season as both teams shot under 30 percent from the floor.

Turning Point

After Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) tied the contest at 42-all with 3:28 remaining, Villanova reeled off a 9-0 run into the final minute of regulation to build a late it would not relent. Caroline Coyer hit a pair of clutch jumpers at the tail end of the run to keep the Pirates at bay.

Wow, check out the shooting percentages for both teams. This game sounds like it set back women's BB about 10 years.

Villanova hit 10 3-pointers, and most of them were wide open shots.

Why?

Because game after game, SHU players come off their player to help and the ball gets kicked back for wide open shots. Villanova repeatedly pulled that move yesterday.

I wish the Pirates would stop doing this.

Then you had TRS and Richardson combine to go 12-43. The seven other players who played combined for a total of 6-21.

Tiffany Jones, a very good offensive player, took only four shots and went scoreless. That cannot happen.

As the coaches themselves have stated (and also some TV commentators), there's way too much individual play going on, not enough passing and total lack of on-court discipline and focus.

Maybe some players started to get big heads? Maybe some players don't know how to handle success?

All I know is that for the first time in three seasons I'm seeing players get worse rather than show steady improvement.

There's time to turn it around. This team is too deep to let this happen. However, the team leaders need to go back team ball.

Perhaps it's time to give other players more minutes?

Bozzella-ball seems totally focused on out-hustling your opponent. But his teams play wild ball, with low basketball IQ. Disciplined teams are going to withstand the wild pirate onslaught.

This is exactly how I see it. The defense also suffers because they are playing too many minutes. They are running around like chickens without a head and can't cover the perimeter. In my opinion Tony has to find a way to insert someone off the bench into the starting lineup and then bring in some more support in that 2nd quarter. You are also seeing players that for whatever reason can't focus or execute for segments of the 40 minutes.

There are times when either T.Richardson or K. Richardson have the ball and they have no intention of passing. They'll go 1 on 3 or 1 on 4. They score their share of points but way too many possessions where their teammates are not involved. Are they trying to make the NCAA's or are they in an intramural league mindset?? The good news is that they get to play all of these teams
again.

I only partially agree.

There is, however, a game plan. I've heard three coaches say in the last 10 days that players are not following the game plan.

We've seen the Pirates team look very organized and sound against some very good teams.

I mentioned earlier that some people can't handle success. Some people also cannot handle freedom on the court. The coach gives you an inch and you try to take a foot. When you do that you hurt your game, your teammates and the chances of winning.

NYC Pirate may be correct. Going 100 percent can wipe you out. Playing a great 25-30 minutes is better than a mediocre 35-40 minutes.

I was too tired to post much last night. I think there's a lot here that's spot on. I also agree with 400 down thread that for the last few games the players are NOT playing solidly to plan. It's not a "hustle" game, but for some reason, they've gone off plan.

I'll note that in the third quarter (would not have been seen on TV or mentioned on radio) - both Tab and Kena had a very long discussion near the midcourt sideline - this was during a very long timeout. They were both pleading with each other - lots of hands going on and at the end of it a solid team mate to team mate hand slap of agreement.

I think they're trying.

It's possible that the model of Didi and Daisha overwhelms Tab in particular - that she too should be able to will her team forward, especially the way DiDi was able. Perhaps she feels like she must measure up the same way - and if so - it takes her OFF her game.

For 64, glad you mentioned Tara and Egan, it's possible that in a game like this, they would have made a difference on the defensive end. I was thinking about it during the game last night. Legs yes, rotation, yes, but absolutely everyone was wearing those funny spiral eyeglasses they used to sell in comic books a long time ago. No one saw the rim and board properly. It was exasperating beyond belief. So in my mind, last night, I did not think either might have made that much of a difference.

For whatever reason, I still think, watching it live, that the team did want to play to plan and that the constant missing caused us to break ourselves down - in this game.

I think the observation by 400 on help side collapsing too quickly and leaving a wide open perimeter shot to kill us is something they have to focus on - a lot. Let's see how it goes tomorrow in DC.

As to tired legs, they were conditioned hard this summer and through the non-conference. After a week off, you simply cannot blame legs. There is maybe a mental fatigue due to expectations? They have to kiss goodbye expectations and play as a team and it will right itself.
