Washington, D.C. The starting backcourt for the Seton Hall women’s basketball team combined to score 61 points in an 83-75 victory at Georgetown on Sunday afternoon at McDonough Arena. The victory for the Pirates (14-4, 4-3 BIG EAST) snapped a three-game losing skid and marked the final contest in a league-play long three-contest road trip.

Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas), who entered the contest as the BIG EAST’s top scorer in league play, continued her torrid start to conference action with 29 points and eight rebounds to lead the Pirates. Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) added a career-high 20 points and stuffed the stat sheet with seven rebounds and six assists while Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the third Pirate in double-figures with 12 points.

The Pirates led by one after a quarter and by three at halftime but used a 9-0 run midway through the third quarter to take an 11-point lead, their largest of the game. The Hoyas (9-9, 2-6 BIG EAST) hung tough and were within a possession in the final minutes of regulation before The Hall closed out the victory. Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) helped the Pirates to a 42-40 edge on the glass against the top rebounding squad in the BIG EAST with 11 rebounds while Jordan Molyneaux (Denver, Colo.) came off the bench to block five shots and notch two steals. Dorothy Adomako and Dionna White tied for Georgetown-high with 17 points apiece.

Turning Point

With the Pirates clinging to a three-point lead in the final 90 seconds of regulation, Richardson-Smith came through with a lay-in with 1:07 to play to push the lead back to five. Georgetown answered inside the final minute to cut the lead back to three, before Richardson converted a three-point play that put The Hall ahead 79-73 with 28.0 seconds to play. The Hoyas could not close back within a possession as the Pirates sealed the victory.

Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the result

“This was a great TEAM win. I said ‘great job Jordan’ after the game and it was perfect because Jordan Molyneaux and Jordan Mosley both had massive contributions off the bench. I’m extremely proud of the way this group bounced back from a tough stretch.”
