Speaks volumes! The attitude of this squad is alarming. Listen to the whole thing for yourselves when available but one excerpt... "I'm not used to coaching teams like that." Not prepared, bad attitudes, negativity. Glad he's the guy in charge and isn't going to put up with bs but man this is looking fugly.

It was obvious early on as soon as Siena started their 14-1 run. Sha should absolutely have called some TOs during the first half and tried to get the team back together but goodness gracious he has a LOT of work to do. And the guys need to do even more themselves... FTs, shooting, defense, all of it.

At times it was clear, to me at least, that the team wasn't executing plays correctly.

Sha was demonstrative in his displeasure but the TV cameras were probably not showing that.
I certainly picked it up. The execution was not there at all. A lot of folks here are ready to blame him too much in my opinion for a very poor performance by the players. Coaching needs work, for sure, but what can you do when this kind of thing happens other than work on getting them to buy in and see what you can put together in the rest of the season.

Well, while as fans I agree with Sha, I also don’t want to hear that from the coach. The frank talk is refreshing, but I think he needs to mince his words some. I don’t want a Patrick Ewing scenario with kids being so soft these days.

While I think Willard was like a brick wall, Shaheen needs to be a little more selective with words.

Don’t want mass defections

They have played several games like this in a row. We should have beaten Oklahoma, and barely escaped Memphis, after similar execution issues (though not as bad). To me he seemed to get increasingly frustrated with the team in game each day this weekend. And yes, I do agree it can be toned down a bit in press conferences. But hey... maybe this team (and staff) will not be soft and will look in the mirror and say, yeah let's work on the things we need to work on.

Too early to give up on the season. There is enough talent to compete in the BE. A starting lineup of Richmond, Dawes, Samuel, Dre/Femi, Yetna can be effective. The key will be getting Richmond on track. If Sha can accomplish that the remaining pieces should fall into place.

By some of the "sky is falling" comments on here you'd think we just lost to Chicago State and are doomed to go 0-20 in Big East play. That is very unlikely to happen. I don't think we'll have a .500 or winning conference record, but there is a chance if this team gets its act together and Sha turns out a good coaching job this year.

I actually like it and find it refreshing that he shoots from the hip, doesn't soft soap stuff. Maybe I'm old school but to me not being prepared and not putting effort in is inexcusable. Make a mistake and screw up while trying hard...you can't get on your guys about that, but bad attitude and lethargy, not cool! I'm sure the question will come up, wonder how Willard would have responded to what just happened?

With the possibility of Samuel, where would they go? And most have already defected.... once. One consideration for many on this board is not to go overboard about acquiring mediocre transfers from schools that don't miss them.

It looks like Sha is at odds with this group to some degree. He wants them to play like him. He was very talented and knew the game when he was on the floor. Since I don’t follow ST. Peter’s it’s so tough to gauge why that group bought in? I guess it took time. From watching them in the NCAAs last season it seems as though that backcourt was more fundamentally sound than our guys.

This was where my head went as well. I read the above quotes in addition to stuff he’s said since media day and in my head I said “oh no I hope Sha isn’t our Patrick Ewing”, as in a great player and school legend who has such an “old school” philosophy which fans eat up but today’s players tune out and everyone runs for the exits. Sha and Ewing would have been amazing coaches at the highest level 20 years ago, but the game has changed. Sha made it work at lower level since everyone has a chip on their shoulder in the MAAC but Sha needs to tone it down soon because if there’s a mass exodus and we have no NIL to speak of to replenish the roster, we’re toast. For now just shake your head and move onto next weekend as a fan for mental health reasons as was suggested in another thread. I’ve been disassociated with the Jets for years for the same reason, and if that’s what it comes down to here, so be it. Life goes on.

Their guards, Banks and I forget the other guy were really good. Very secure with the ball and changed pace well.

at odds or not there is no excuse to play that out of control by our guards.
they all have lots of experience. its head scratching

They say in political elections "Its the economy stupid"

They should say in college basketball "Its the players stupid"

Could Sha improve the performance yes of course,But the quality of our players is mediocre.Total rebuild required. Will take some time.

I'm not impressed with Femi.Plays defense thats about it.

Stop giving out free minutes would be nice. You’ve got to earn minutes.

Sha has to start pointing his thumb-- He sat by when 'after "mass subs,Sienna goes on a 14-3 run -- The play which he drew up for Dawes on his first TO in second half was total "fool's gold" --not working with Frosh Davis on defending the inbounds and when down 3 with 6 seconds left not to at least have KRichmond and Jackson instead of KC and Femi just evidenced Sha forgetting details . ( BTW more than likely none of it may have mattered) I want Sha to start having things be not all about him and reflect on his failings. The Team was in position to win and got no help from him.

Yeah, for sure. Wasn’t it Butch Lee’s son at point? Kid was amazing. Would love to have had him on our team. Made great decisions to set up teammates and could take the last second shot and score. Kinda of like Bryce did when healthy.

FWIW, if you listen to the interview Sha does call out the coaching (accepts responsibility) as well.

I’ll bet they do, their buddy and friend.
Ridiculous. Only five guys played for Willard last year and one of them is injured right now. This is on the coaching staff to connect with these guys in the right way. But even that might not be enough since we are sorely lacking in guard play and size at the 4/5.

Missed Dre Davis. He’s perhaps our best finisher in traffic. If we make half our put backs we win by 6-10.
For sure. Shaheen was not happy to find out at game time that Davis was not playing. Not sure how that communication plays out but you would think he would be near the top.

I thought Davis was a warrior?Injury described as minor.

And from the looks of it, it seems like those five guys (well, maybe four) are having a very hard time adjusting to not being coddled by their pal, who always had the goal of making the NCAA Tournament ... but they sure did love him. The new coach knows that's not a proper ceiling for a Big East program and he is challenging them to do the work required to make it past Day One. It's a culture shock when a group of proud people are told, "You know, that's not good enough."

This is pretty much ridiculous and the opposite of anything that is remotely happening. Good insight

How many practices do you go to every week? What’s the excuse for the 5 guys playing who weren’t here last year? It could be 2 of those 4 guys are struggling playing inside when they are both stretch 4s.

Great question. Let’s evaluate those other 5 guys early on.

Al-Amir Dawes:
shooting 50% from 3 and 92% from the line. He also has the ability to put the ball on the floor but was primarily known as a 40%+ career 3 point shooter, and is now being asked to run the point because of the coaches lack of confidence in Kadary and because we lack any depth at PG. This is why his assist to turnover ratio is off. But he does currently lead the team in PPG.

Dre Davis:
Has arguably been our best all around player. Second leading scorer, also shooting 90% at the line, finishing around the rim and doing a little bit of everything. Would like to see him be more selective with his 3 point shot and we will see about his availability going forward. Sha was clearly not happy about the lack of communication on the knee injury.

Femi Odukale
If you watched his highlight film from Pitt and looked at this stats, it was obvious he was more of a slasher on offense and that’s about it. If you expected him to be more efficient or take his offense to a different level that was not a realistic expectation. I think you should expect him to be a similar players to what Marcus Toney- El was. Gritty glue guy who will give you some occasional offense, but more often than not frustrate you on that side of the floor. He is going to be out there primarily as a defender. Yet again we are seeing him be asked to play PG and display his inability to execute that role.

KC N’Defo
Here is another guy that didn’t light the world on fire offensively while at St. Peter’s. He was solid against MAAC level competition. He is going to get you the occasional post up bucket, can finish on the break as a rim runner, but is mostly a garbage bucket type guy, who can pass well for a big man in a high / low or back door type scenario. He is clearly pressing at this point and is finding the adjustment to high major basketball a little difficult at the moment. He did have a solid NCAA tournament but did battle foul trouble as well. At the end of the day I think KC is a solid stop gap transition player for 1 year, who already knows Sha’s system, culture, and expectations. Not sure what else you want here.

Tae Davis
Love the raw talent that this frosh has. He is getting meaningful minutes. And I would rather see that, than him rotting away on the bench. Is he also pressing?…yes. Is he making some frosh mistakes?…yes. Does he have a lot to refine?…yes. But I see effort on the defensive end. I see a guy who can potentially guard positions 1-4 with his length. I see a guy who could be a huge focal point for success in a couple years. So is he struggling overall?…yes. But this is a guy I am going to build around. Sha is going to do what it takes to make sure Tae knows that too so he doesn’t transfer out. I can deal with the growing pains here.

So there is my take on the 5 new guys.

At the end of the day if Sha had these types of players in the correct roles, supported properly by the other 5 guys, then it could / should work. But he needs to recruit a PG and Big to compliment all the defensive minded guards and wings he has.

We saw a bunch of individual guys who on paper all seem to be average to solid. But 10 average guys could ultimately be a pesky team on a given night, but to win with a heigher ceiling you need some DUDES that will go out and get buckets. There are no DUDES on this team. I am afraid with NIL we won’t be able to recruit or retain a DUDE.

Delgado, KC, Desi, Sandro, or Powell were never going to transfer and sit out a year when they were the main guy on the current roster. But no sit out rule changes everything for retention. Willard knew this. And the NIL situation has made a previous disadvantage even worse. Yes people were always getting paid. But now the collectives have allowed the masses into the arms race and we don’t have the masses. Willard knew this too.

I think Sha brought in his type of guy with the transfers. He needs time to build his entire roster the way he wants. the bigger question has become is he even capable of building it.

And of the guys you mentioned the only one who brought some heart yesterday was Femi. He’s the guy who played his heart out last night. He’s probably the least talented of the group you commented on but he’s by far got the most guts. If we’re going to struggle all year I’d love to see 5 Odukale’s on the court. It wasn’t the guys from last year didn’t bring it and the new guys did. I don’t think anyone other than Odukale brought their A effort.
