Game tied at 1-1 in the bottom of the 2nd.

Great weather today in South Orange.

Pirates lose Game#2 to Cavier 5-3.

This was first game of today’s doubleheader. Game 3 later today. SHU needs that one.

Really poor hitting with guys on base. Too many strikeouts when you need to put ball in play.

Almost impossible to watch and give a good opinion because of PSN’s high parking deck camera. You can’t be further away from the action.

Lost art. With every dumb stat people care about there's no percentage on getting guys over from 2nd to 3rd with 0 outs. There's no percentage of getting guys in from 3rd less than 2 outs. Little things win or lose ball games.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Seniors Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.) reached base three times apiece, but the Seton Hall baseball team fell to Xavier, 5-3, in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Dadona went 2-for-4 with a walk and two stolen bases, while Molina went 2-for-4 with a walk. Senior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) was the top Pirate run generator, recording a pair of RBIs.

After both teams scored a run in the first inning, the Pirates took the lead in the bottom of the third inning. Sebastiano Santorelli (Tuckahoe, N.Y.) and Molina led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) sacrificed both runners into scoring position, Ramiz grounded out to short, which scored Santorelli with the go-ahead run.

Turning Point:
After Xavier tied the game at two with a single run in the top of the fourth inning, they took control of the game in the top of the sixth. A wild pitch by Seton Hall starter Ricky DeVito (Staten Island, N.Y.) allowed the lead run to score with one out. After DeVito got the second out of the inning, Xavier's Chris Givin drove in another run with a bunt single, giving the Musketeers a 4-2 lead.

Seton Hall plated their third and final run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Freshman Casey Dana(Montgomery, N.Y.) led off the inning with a double to left field. After advancing to third on a passed ball, he scored on a ground out by Christian Del Castillo (Miami, Fla.).

Inside the Numbers:
  • Dadona reached base three times, going 2-for-4 with a walk, a run scored and two stolen bases.
  • Molina went 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Ramiz drove in two runs.

  • Sophomore Noah Thompson (Frisco, Texas) allowed one run over 3.1 innings of relief, scattering just two hits.
  • Seton Hall had nine hits, while Xavier had seven. Seton Hall committed three errors, while the Musketeers had one.
  • Both teams left a large amount of men on base. Seton Hall matched its season-high of 13 stranded, while Xavier left 10 on base.
  • Xavier's Matt Kent picked up the victory. He allowed three runs over 5.2 innings pitched.
News & Notes:
  • The loss drops the Pirates to 13-13-1 overall and 1-1 in the BIG EAST on the season, while Xavier improves to 12-22 overall and 2-3 in conference play.

SANTORELLI, ALESCIO MUSCLE PIRATES PAST XAVIER
Story Links
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Junior Sebastiano Santorelli(Tuckahoe, N.Y.) and senior Mike Alescio (Fair Haven, N.J.) hit home runs in a go-ahead, three-run fifth inning as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Xavier, 9-6, in game two of a doubleheader on Saturday.

Santorelli drove in a team-high four RBIs in all, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and two runs scored. Alescio was 3-for-4 with a home run, two RBIs. In fact, the "meat" of the Pirates' order did the most damage. Those batting three through five in the Pirates' order combined to go 10-for-13.

Batting third in the order was Al Molina (Freehold, N.J.), who went 3-for-5 with two doubles and two runs scored. Alescio batted fourth, and senior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) batted fifth. Ramiz went 4-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Xavier's offense got started right away, erupting for three runs off of Seton Hall starter Billy Layne, Jr. (Cliffwood Beach, N.J.) in the first inning. The damaging blow was a two-run home run by Xavier's Matt Warkentin.

Seton Hall got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Xavier again went up by three runs when Allbry Major hit a solo home run in the top of the third inning.

The Hall cut the deficit to one, 4-3, with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth. Ramiz had an RBI single, and Nick Dabrio (Jackson, N.J.) hit a sacrifice fly to drive in the second run of the inning.

Turning Point:
With the Pirates still trailing, 4-3, in the top of the fifth inning reliever Andrew Politi (Long Valley, N.J.) walked the bases full with no outs. Remarkably, the junior got out of the inning unscathed as he struck out the next three batters.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, senior Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch with one out. Santorelli followed with a home run to right field to put the Pirates on top, 5-4. With two outs, Alescio belted a solo opposite field home run to extend The Hall's advantage to 6-4.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Santorelli drove in a team-high four runs, going 2-for-5 with a home run, a double and two runs scored.

  • Senior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed two unearned runs over the final three innings to pick up his fifth save of the season.
  • Seton Hall had 13 hits, while Xavier had nine. Seton Hall committed two errors, while the Musketeers had one.
  • Seton Hall left six men on base, while the Musketeers left 10.
  • Xavier's Trevor Olson took the loss in relief. He allowed five runs over 1.2 innings pitched
News & Notes:
  • The victory improves the Pirates to 14-13-1 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST on the season, while Xavier falls to 12-23 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
  • Seton Hall is now 9-7 all-time against Xavier.
  • The Pirates won their first BIG EAST series of the season for the first time since 2015. That year, the Pirates swept Xavier in Cincinnati.
  • The combined four home runs hit in the game are a season-high for any Seton Hall game this season. The Pirates now have a total of 12 home runs this season.
  • Seton Hall's five doubles in the game are tied for the season-high.
  • The Pirates reached double-figures in hits for the 10th time this season.
