NEW YORK – Senior utility Yasmin Harrell (Cheektowaga, N.Y.) has been named BIG EAST Softball Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday (Feb. 22). Harrell’s nod marks the second-straight week a Pirate has won the award, the first two weekly honors of the season.
Harrell went 9-for-19 (.474) in The Hall’s 4-1 week at the Kickin’ Chicken Classic, notching at least one hit in all five games. The speedster made Seton Hall history in a Saturday win over Appalachian State when she swiped three bags to become the program’s all-time leader in stolen bases. After notching six total steals on the week, she sits alone atop the record book with 70 career swipes.
In her dominant week, Harrell sparked The Hall from the leadoff spot by scoring eight runs, driving in three, walking three times and going 6-for-6 on the basepaths. Her overall slash line for the week was a sterling .474/.565/.526 and she scored two runs in four-straight games, all wins, to close the tournament.
Overall this season, Harrell tops the Pirates in batting average (.412), runs scored (11) and stolen bases (7). She has led off every contest and produced a .524 on-base percentage, also tops on The Hall. Thanks to her contributions from the top of the order the Pirates are scoring 6.8 runs a game and are off to an 8-2 start, best since the 2004 campaign that ended in a BIG EAST championship.
The Hall returns to action this weekend when it kicks off a spring break trip to the Sunshine State. The Pirates will take part in the USF Invitational from Feb. 26-28, taking on Eastern Michigan, Villanova and Georgia State. First up is EMU on Feb. 26 at 4:30 p.m.
