A toss up into the air led to a jumping Rodriguez hammering the ball home through the net with his left hand.

What was even more amazing about the play itself?

Rodriguez wasn't even thinking about the possibility of the dunk happening.

"I didn't even know the play was for me," said the 6-foot-6 sophomore out of Abraham Lincoln High School. "I didn't even know we had the ball. I didn't know we had possession. When I came off the screen, Khadeen threw it, and I just put it in the rim."

Yeah I was there when he said it. But he had a sly smile on his face and I think he might have been slightly playing the media.

What he meant is that before the team ran the play he initially thought it was going to be Troy's possession. Let's just say that Desi has a very outgoing personality.

BTW, after the reporters left him I had basically a one on one with him and asked him about that comment. His reply will soon be on the Trove.

I am just happy there was an inbound play. The dunk is just icing on the cake.
Actually we have scored a few buckets directly from inbound plays this year.

Credit should be given since last year the opposite occurred here.

I am surprised we haven't run more plays like that especially with Shaheen on the sidelines. That was a frequent play with him and Gary Saunders. Free points! Take em.

Happy to see us finally making an effort beyond chucking to half court!

+1 Dan

IMO, the staff has done a good job this year with player development and execution on dead ball situations.

The only thing I wish they would improve on is shot selection. Way too many ill advised shots. Low basketball IQ is expected with a young team, but if they can find a way to correct it - watch out.

We were doing that same inbounds play 10 years ago in cyo. After 6 years this joke ofna coach has one play and people are excited.

I had thought I had mashed pretty hard on the "sarcasm" button with the mention of a SINGLE inbounds play, no?

In all fairness, credit goes to Rodriquez for that play NOT the staff. Desi and Isaiah ran that play in high school. Saw it on a video.

And all that had nothing to do with design? Guess the players decided to call the play.

Come on posters. Love him or not sometimes credit is due despite what you think of the man.

Reactions: arcdreams and SOBO1
Dan don't waste your breath. Everything bad is Willard's fault and everything good is because of the talent of the players.

I have read the reactions on this board during and after every game this year and I am very amused because most of the posters clearly have an agenda.

On this latest issue I believe that the coach was not purely speaking about the team's record. I believe what he was saying is that the team as a whole is performing better than he thought they would. I believe he was talking about the progress they have made at both the three and four as Desi, Nzei and Ish have all performed above all of our expectations.

That is all I think he meant. I don't think he thought the team would be worse than 7-2 at this point and if he did it was probably because he thought we would go 1-2 in Charleston by beating Long Beach and then losing to Virginia and in the consolation game and then losing to GW on the road.

If that had happened I don't think anyone would have been surprised to see SHU 6-3. For me I think the team has played better than I thought they would. Would I like to see Whitehead pass the ball more and showboat less? Yes, but when a player is this talented and he is learning a new way to play you take the good with the bad and hope he gets better as the year goes on. I think there is clear evidence based on the reduced turnovers that he is learning and I am cautiously optimistic that this will continue.

DRod is a sweet player. Tip of the iceberg so far. Glad they are using this God given gift of leaping that he has. Seems to have better hops than last year.

One of my favorite plays from last year was when Desi almost murdered that kid from St. John's on a dunk attempt that started from about the foul line. Haven't seen many of those in recent decades.

I get that people have lost patience, but to bash the coach over every little thing is beyond annoying. Obviously there is room for improvement but we constantly hear...

He can't recruit, but yet we have one of the most talented teams we've had in years.

He can't coach, but players are developing and getting better.

If you want to criticize Willard when he screws up that's totally fine, but throw the guy a bone once and a while when the team does something well.

LR suggests that posters have an agenda. SOB wants us to throw the coach a bone.

News Flash: I am pretty darned clear that most of us learned this past off-season that our thoughts and wishes are essentially irrelevant and will NOT influence administrative decisions.

Given this cold hard fact, there is no reason to throw the coach a bone or rip the coach a new one. Honest to goodness, most folks are just numb and hopeless BUT actually trying to appreciate the players. We are rooting hard for them! Any blowback that reflects our feelings about the coach is incidental, irrelevant and will not impact anything.

I would strongly recommend that those of you who are worried about any possible negative tone should smile and chortle because the rest of us have absolutely no influence. You can rest easy.

As for me, I am going to all the games and will be rooting.

It has nothing to do with "making an influence". If the coach does something bad - call him out on it. If the coach does something good - say good job. It's as simple as that.

Not everything is good, not everything is bad. Just be reasonable is all I'm saying.

I was watching a game the other night and a team threw it into the backcourt from under their basket, and it almost got stolen, and I don't think we have done that once yet this year. Hooray!
