Since Jerry C posted a story on Herb Pope on the free board let me backtrack to his collapse on campus.
The team was working out and Herb asked to go to the bathroom. He left the court and after 10-12 minutes hadn't come back yet. Grant Billmeier noticed this and went to look for Pope. He found him on the floor in the men's bathroom by the girls locker room convulsing and puking violently.
Grant immediately sought out help and someone called for an ambulance while the team and many other student athletes surrounded him on the floor.
It's here where memories of the incident from my source gets a little fuzzy. Herb needed a defibrillator but my source doesn't remember if it happened before the medics arrive or if it happened in the ambulance. Regardless, the defibrillator and Grant's looking for Pope probably saved his life.
Once in the ambulance Steve Sauers decided to accompany Herb and spoke to him the entire time to both calm him down and help him communicate with the medics.
Once Herb was in the hospital few people were allowed to visit him. One of course was Willard. I heard that Gonzo tried to visit but was denied. That comment you will have to choose on your own whether to believe it or not.
