SECAUCAS, N.J. – Seton Hall's Zach Schellenger (Malvern, Pa.) was selected in the sixth round of the 2017 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday.
Schellenger becomes the first Seton Hall player selected in the 2017 Draft and the first Pirate pitcher selected since Conor Krauss was picked by the Cincinnati Reds in the 20th round of the 2014 Draft. Furthermore, he is the first Pirate chosen by the Red Sox since Steve Hayward in the 1993 draft.
A hard-throwing right-hander with a lethal slider, Schellenger has been a force on the mound for the Pirates since his arrival in 2014. After a year of growth as primarily a starting pitcher, he blossomed into one of the top relief pitchers in the BIG EAST Conference as a sophomore. Schellenger made 30 appearances in 2015, which is tied for third-most in a single-season in Seton Hall history. That year, he pitched to a 4.34 earned run average and struck out 70 batters in only 45.2 innings pitched, which ranked fifth in the BIG EAST. Schellenger led the Pirates with six saves and finished fifth in the conference with 21 games finished.
As a senior, Schellenger made 10 appearances and posted a career-best 2.08 earned run average. Opponents hit only .156 against him and he struck out 23 batters in 13.0 innings pitched.
A two-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, he has twice been named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week in his collegiate career.
