Zagoria at Practice

Dre Davis is the key swing player to me bc he’s playing a spot without options.

If he can be a reliable 4 and stay healthy we’ve got a chance. He’s a good player when healthy and seems to take to Sha’s style.

If Dre is playing the 4 position we are in big trouble. He should only play the 3 forward and let other bigger and stronger kids play the power forward. This way we save his body which has been injury prone and let him just be a scorer, play some "D" and get some boards.

If you want your best 5 out there he needs to play some 4.
When you play someone out of position, you're not going to get the best out of your players. That was part of our problems playing Tray at the 5. Hell, that was the problem playing Tyrese at the 5. :)

Ty played well at 5. Better than he did at 4 imo. That may be due to just getting the time. But i am not sure he has the consistent game of a 4.
Ty played ok, but he's not a back to the basket type player. He's not a 3pt shooter (minus one bank shot v. Memphis), but I think he's at his most effective squaring up.

Most "5"s today are not back to basket players. They're more Sam Perkins than Kareem. Or better yet, they're more Bol Bol than anything. They're nothing more than tall 4s. Samuel alongside the 2 bigs now might make him look more efficient but until he goes pro, he needs to embrace being the big man

Ok, admittedly I lost track there but the point remains

Ty spent a lot of time playing back to basket last year.
Tray spent a lot of time getting pushed around by "tall 4's".
They both played out of position and neither really excelled.

Davis is a unique player. He's strong, but undersized. Holloway seems to think it's a favorable match-up when we're on offense. He's going to be a better 4 than NgaNga or Tubek at least to start the year. He's going to have to play there. Addae-Wusu and Coleman will probably be at the 3. I think it's definitely a concern because Davis is so injury prone.

Davis only played in 23 games last year, but he was arguably our best offensive player: 19 MPG, 9.6 PPG, 3.3 RPG, shot .517/.407/.862. He had an offensive rating of 108.4 overall, 111 in BE games (14), and also 103.6 against Tier A+B teams (13 games), 106 against Tier A (10 games). This team desperately needs that level of offensive efficiency available more than less than a half of only 23 games.

All of that was way better than anything he ever did at Louisville. Can he repeat it while adding 10 MPG to his workload? If he does that we're golden.

Jackson was a problem playing the 5, 4 and 3. He is a jump shooter and that’s it.

Occasionally he got inspired to get some offensive rebounds in flurries.

But Michigan can gladly have him.

He’s no loss. But remember, this was a kid for who two summers was the “talk” of every summer offseason workout that got posted here. Best player in practice. Best athlete on the team. NBA potential. And the like.

Bryant coach Jared Grasso taking leave of absence from program

Bryant men's basketball coach Jared Grasso is taking a leave of absence from the program, a school spokesperson told ESPN on Friday.

Associate head coach Phil Martelli Jr. will serve as the acting head coach during Grasso's absence.

No further details were provided.

Grasso, 43, emerged as one of the hottest mid-major coaches in the country over the past few seasons. After eight years as an assistant coach under Tim Cluess at Iona, where he established himself as an adept recruiter, Grasso took over at Bryant in 2018.

With a roster-building strategy heavy on transfers, Grasso led the Bulldogs to an NCAA tournament bid and NEC regular-season and conference tournament titles in 2022. Bryant also finished second in the NEC in 2021.

Martelli Jr. taking over as acting head coach comes just two weeks after his father, Phil Martelli Sr., was announced as Michigan's interim head coach while Juwan Howard recovers from a heart procedure.

Bryant opens its season on Nov. 6 at home against Dartmouth.
