Queens, N.Y. – Katey Brennan (Yardley, Pa.) and Caroline Hobbes (Bay Shore, N.Y.) each launched home runs while Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) tossed another gem in the circle as the Pirates picked up a series-opening win at St. John's, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at Red Storm Field.

How it Happened
After stranding three runners through their first two turns at the plate, the Pirates would break through in the third. Carr drew a one out walk, followed by Olivia Gilbert (Johnston, R.I.) reaching on an error to put runners at first and second. Brennan stepped in and drove a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right field for a three-run home run.

In the bottom half, St. John's answered back with a homer of its own. Leadoff batter London Jarrard laced a solo home run to right to make it a 3-1 game.

After failing to score when having two on with one out in the sixth, the Pirates looked to bounce back with some seventh inning insurance. That would come in the form of Hobbes, who led off the inning with a solo home run over the fence in left field to make it a 4-1 game.

The Red Storm would not go away quietly in the bottom of the seventh. With two outs, pinch hitter Anese Thompson singled on a grounder between shortstop and third base. After an intentional walk to Jarrard loaded the bases, Carr recorded a strikeout to seal the victory.

News & Notes
  • Hobbes' home run was the first of her career.
  • Brennan's three-run shot was her first home run since March 19 at Rider.
  • Carr picked up the win in the circle, tossing all seven innings and allowing just one run while striking out four.
  • Over her last four starts, Carr has allowed just three runs and just 14 base hits over 28 innings.
What's Next
The Pirates and Red Storm will do battle again on Saturday afternoon with first pitch set for 1 p.m.

Queens, N.Y. – Lela Allen (Phoenix, Ariz.) collected three hits and drove in four runs, including a crucial three-run double in the seventh inning, as the Pirates defeated St. John's, 8-3, on Saturday to secure a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament.

How it Happened
St. John's came out of the gates strong, with London Jarrard hitting a leadoff home run to give the home side an early 1-0 lead. However, the Pirates would respond with a long ball of their own two innings later, as Kelsey Carr (Ridgewood, N.Y.) lifted a two run homer to left field.

Runs in the third and fourth innings put St. John's back ahead, 3-2, a lead it would hold entering the sixth inning. That was when the Pirates turned the tide. After a double and single placed runners on the corners, Allen dropped a single into center to score Miranda Arruda (Pawcatuck, Conn.) from third with the tying run. Two batters later, Andrea Perez (Corona, Calif.) hit a sacrifice fly to put Seton Hall ahead.

Four more would cross the plate in the seventh inning to pad the Pirate lead. With two outs and the bases loaded, Allen drove a liner towards right center. St. John's center fielder Sydney Totarsky dove to try and make the catch, but was unable to as the double cleared the bases and gave Seton Hall a 7-3 edge. Perez would follow next with an RBI single to add an extra insurance run.

News & Notes
  • With the win, the Pirates secure a berth in the BIG EAST Tournament for the second consecutive season.
  • This marks the first time Seton Hall has made consecutive trips to the conference tournament since it won back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005.
  • Allen collected her 100th career base hit with her seventh inning three-run double.
  • This was the first four-RBI game in Allen's career.
  • Kyra Kreuscher (Great River, N.Y.) picked up the victory to improve to 8-3 on the season, allowing one hit over 2.1 innings.
  • Carr and Erin Howard (Skillman, N.J.) each picked up two hits, while Taylor Hill (Little Falls, N.J.) scored two more runs to increase her total this season to 45.
  • This is Seton Hall's seventh consecutive victory over St. John's and its eighth win in its last nine tries.

The Pirates will go for the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon with first pitch slated for 12 p.m.
