Business of Basketball - Thurs coach NIT final - Sat get new gig

Is this really an upgrade? Not like STL is a powerhouse in the A-10.
Seems like an odd move. He could’ve stayed at ISU for 2-3 more years. Build a power house and move to a high major. Pieces were in play for a strong campaign next season

We just saw his conference for DeVries go from Drake to West Virginia. Why settle for a mid level A-10 job that can tank your trajectory?

It’s interesting to compare the discussion between coaches and players leaving.

If a Coach leaves, everyone understands he’s doing what’s best for his career.
When a player leaves, there’s more talk of “disloyalty” and “NCAA is ruined”.

Because coaches are professionals who can change jobs anytime they want, just like you and me. With players, they're students (or they're supposed to be) at a school and not employees who can change jobs. If they transfer, there used to be rules where you sit out a year (this helps protect competitive balance/integrity). Now the pendulum has (unfortunately) shifted so far in the direction of the players so we have this crazy free agency where players only care about getting a bag.

he is going from 340k to 2M, 7x your salary overnight. How can that not be an upgrade. Very low IQ thought

I'm looking at the quality of the job/program/league. It might be a slight upgrade in that sense. STL has never been a great job. Did not realize they have the ability to pay that much, so obviously that's a game changer for the coach.

The coaches have always had freedom to move and a bloated salary paid for by their players. Everyone thought that was just peachy keen.
