Jimbo Fisher fired by Texas A&M despite $75 million left on contract

By Justin Tasch

Jimbo Fisher is going to get paid a lot of money to go away from Texas A&M.

The school on Sunday fired the 58-year-old Fisher, who has eight years left on his contract and will receive a buyout upward of $75 million, according to Yahoo Sports.

School officials met on Thursday to weigh Fisher’s future with the football program, according to multiple reports, and the decision has been made to dump the coach in the middle of a disappointing 6-4 season.

“After very careful analysis of all the components related to Texas A&M football, I recommended to President [Mark] Welsh and then Chancellor [John] Sharp that a change in the leadership of the program was necessary in order for Aggie football to reach our full potential and they accepted my decision,” Texas A&M athletics director Ross Bjork said in a statement. “We appreciate Coach Fisher’s time here at Texas A&M and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”

Fisher initially signed a 10-year, $75 million contract with Texas A&M in 2017, leaving Florida State after eight seasons and a national championship.

His contract was extended in 2021, giving him 10 years and $95 million through the 2031 season.

Fisher will end up netting approximately $2.6 million per win during his six-year run as the Aggies’ head coach.

Fisher’s tenure with the Aggies peaked in 2020, when they went 9-1 and won the Orange Bowl, but the program has been in a downturn ever since.

Texas A&M went 8-4 in 2021, then fell to 5-7 last season.

The Aggies lost to Miami (Fla.) in Week 2 of this season, then lost consecutive games to Alabama and Tennessee in October before losing to Ole Miss on Nov. 4.

They defeated Mississippi State on Saturday to improve to 6-4, but 10 losses in his last 15 games against Power 5 opponents ultimately doomed the head coach.

Fisher went 45-25 in six years with Texas A&M.
