Pirates' Comeback Effort Falls Short Against No. 23 USC, 71-63

San Diego, Calif. — Senior Kadary Richmond (Brooklyn, N.Y.) had a team-high 18 points with six rebounds in a spirited comeback effort for the Seton Hall men's basketball team that ultimately fell just short against No. 23 USC, 71-63, in the Pirates' first game at Rady Children's Invitational on Thursday evening.

Graduate student Jaden Bediako (Brampton, Ontario) posted 12 points on 6-of-9 shooting with seven boards for the Pirates (4-1), who trailed by as much as 20 points early in the second half before cutting it to a one-possession game with 4:04 to play.

Senior Dre Davis (Indianapolis, Ind.) played great defense and came up with some big baskets as he finished with 15 points, four rebounds and a team-best three assists.

How It Happened

The Trojans led by 10 at halftime and immediately went on a 10-0 run at the start of the second half that made it 42-22. Davis stopped the bleeding with a pair of made free throws that started a 6-0 spurt, capped off by a Davis three-pointer that trimmed the Pirates' deficit to 13, 42-29 with 15:45 to go in the second half.

Seton Hall turned up the its defensive pressure after its mini-run which was led by Davis and freshman Isaiah Coleman (Fredericksburg, Va.). The full court pressure sparked a 12-0 run for the Pirates that got them within six, 49-43, with 8:06 to go. Richmond scored six of the Pirates next eight points including a fast break layup that made it a three-point game, 56-53.

After two missed free throws on the next USC possession, the Trojans made a defensive stand with two blocked shots. A missed three-point attempt with 1:13 to go down four points was the Pirates' last chance to get within one.
