Three Pirates scored in double-figures, but The Hall faded late in the fourth.

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Graduate student Azana Baines (Blackwood, N.J.) had team-highs of 14 points and eight rebounds, but the Seton Hall women's basketball team fell at Columbia, 72-61, for its first loss of the 2023-24 campaign on Friday.

Seton Hall cut its deficit to 64-61 with 2:35 left in the game, but Columbia closed out the contest with an 8-0 run.

Typical of only the second game of the season, play was a bit sloppy with the teams combined for 37 turnovers.

Two other Pirates also reached double-figures in scoring. Sophomore Micah Gray (Oklahoma City, Okla.) finished with 13 points, while senior Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) had 12 points, four steals and three rebounds.

THE STORY:
The Pirates' offense struggled at the start, committing six turnovers in the first quarter. A Columbia 8-0 run gave it a 13-7 advantage early. A three-pointer by Columbia's Cecelia Collins with 23 seconds left in the first quarter gave the Lions a commanding 23-13 lead after the first 10 minutes.

Seton Hall went on an 11-3 run in the first 2:51 of the second quarter to cut its deficit to 27-24. Two minutes later, a layup by Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) on the fast break tied the score at 29. The Pirates went into the locker room at the half down 39-37, despite allowing the Lions to shoot 57.1 percent from the field.

With the score tied at 43, a made jumper by Baines and a layup by Wright, put The Hall on top, 47-43, with 5:25 left in the third. Down 48-46, Columbia closed the third quarter with a 6-1 run to take a three-point lead into the final 10 minutes.

A layup by Baines with 6:00 left in the contest brought the Pirates to within one point, 55-54, but they couldn't get closer. A pair of free-throws by Savannah Catalon (Burleston, Texas) cut The Hall's deficit to 64-61 with 2:35 remaining, but Columbia was able to keep the Pirates off the scoreboard for the rest of the game.
