How do we look in this game? I assume it is pretty even given the seeds. Maybe we can talk about some positives for the next few days too.

Watching my first ever SHU women's basketball game (my first women's basketball game for that matter) and I'm looking forward to it.

It should be an even game. Our defense is better than it was last year, which will be the difference if the game plays out like it did last year in the NIT. DePaul played a great game against us in the Big East Championship and avoiding that situation is key. DePaul controlled the pace, disrupted our guards and outside shooting, and couldn't miss for the first 10 minutes of the game. If we run after forcing turnovers and have room for outside shots, then I will feel confident.

6711-

Accurate post but 1 thing to add...the game went to 2 OT and A LOT of foul calls called on us and our ladies were just worn out. Our 2 guard fouled out and freshman Tara Inman came in and did a great job. This will not happen this year as Tony has a good bench and 5 strong starters.

One thing to look for is that Rutgers could be without two starters. Both went down with injuries in the BIG Tournament. Rachel Hollivay is the starting center and Syessence Davis is a guard, who is the BIG Defensive Player of the Year, and holds the RU all time steals record. Their status has not been updated yet.

Without these two, RU will have five regular rotation players and two fringe players available.
Bears watching.

What changes were made to RU roster since last year? I know we got Simmons from Alabama, and that alone is huge IMHO. Did any key players graduate?

For the most part, RU has the same roster as last year. They added a 3 pt specialist, named Hernandez, who plays a couple of minutes a game.

If RU is healthy this should be a good game. The one big advantage RU has is the caliber of teams it has faced. SHU has only faced one NCAA team in DePaul, while RU has played 17 games against NCAA teams.

I don't know RU but we will win if:

1. We hit our free throws- especially Didi Simmons.who gets fouled a lot.

2. Tabitha Richardson -Smith scores 15 or more. If she and Janee Johnson are draining threes we're in good shape.

Our defense always shows up. Or else the players sit.

the injuries to Hollivay and Davis are a huge concern, I would really like RU in this one if healthy but if they are not I think the Pirates could get this one. One thing to note is perhaps the Pirates might be a bit overhyped to play RU and it might be a factor in its first trip to the tournament in a long time

That's an excellent point. Sometimes you can want something too much and if you don't have the experience to handle the situation you can fail.

I think that's what happened in the Big East final game against DePaul. SHU wanted it badly but didn't have that type playoff experience. They came out tight and played one of their worst games of the year.

Hopefully the team learned from that failure.

I think the Big East final was more of a result of DePaul playing an excellent game, especially in the first half. Most of our errors were forced by DePaul and they did an excellent job picking apart our D.

Spoke to the staff and they did feel we came out a little tight as we have not been in that type game in a very long time.

They also noted that the girls played their last 5 games on the road and that took a toll on them. But they didn't want to make that sound like an excuse. They just answered my questions.

another thing that could factor in is NCAA tournament experience....the RU staff has CVS we know her record as well as former players on staff with final 4 experience. I would think a certain mindset needs to be driven home to the players about the tournament so the edge would go to the RU staff with this. Just from hearing Bozzella talk about revenge, I wonder if too much emphasis is being placed on who the opponent is and not treating it as just another tournament game.

The main reason they lost to DePaul was that they repeatedly left 3-point shooters wide open.

They also did that early in the game they beat DePaul at home by 20 points. The difference was that day the Pirates were home AND on fire.

In the first game, we were running and getting open outside shots. In the championship game, DePaul slowed things down significantly and overplayed our guards on the three-point line. That caused the slow start and we never recovered. Those were the two huge differences between the two games.
