VERY VERY SAD NEWS

Yale is one of the best schools in the nation and is located steps from a legitimate ghetto...these kind of things happen at many schools.

How often they happen here is up to the university, though. They really need to take the plunge on extra security.

It's also rapidly becoming a major part of our local perception - ie that SHU is not a safe place to go to school. That's a major problem that needs to be addressed swiftly and decisively before it spirals out of control and impacts next year's enrollment.

Re: what can alums and friends of the school do, I think expressing deep concern is a start. Universities tend to respond well to public pressure, much more so than governments, businesses or other organizations.

I agree 100%

Could this rapist be a student , friend or relative of a student visiting someone ?

What is the likelihood of him just deciding to drive onto Seton Hall's campus with the plan in mind to rape the first vulnerable victim ?

My guess is he was probably on the campus for some other reason first .He will probably be identified once the sketch is distributed .

I'll bet this guy is arrested within 30 days .

I graduated in 2009. Public Safety just can't protect the student body...Incident after incident...ENOUGH IS ENOUGH. Get the security that our students need and deserve, or more and more of these stories are going to come out.

Newshu,

Right on the money. The South Orange police could care less about students' safety and are more concerned with breaking up parties and writing noise violation tickets.

I was disgusted how I was treated by the South Orange police department. There have been SEVERAL instances, but this one takes the cake:

My house on Valley Street was vandalized one night when I was returning home from work. I called the police. The officer asked if I had been drinking, I told him no, to which he responded "Yeah right, then why are your eyes bloodshot then and all puffy?" I told him I was up to catch the 5:20 AM train to NYC and just had gotten home. (This was at 10 PM mind you.)

He then ripped up the complaint in front of my eyes and said "This is what happens when you drink, and lie to me about it."

Seton Hall needs to take their own measures in protecting their students, because South Orange police have no interest in doing so.

I witnessed this story --
While attending Seton Hall a student brought a real ax on campus as a part of a Halloween costume. Security approached the student during the day, after returning from the store, to inspect the ax to make sure it was not real. The security guard handled and inspected the ax and let the student walk off with it because the ax appeared to be fake, when in truth the ax had a plastic no-slip handle and a sheath over the tip. It weighed 5+ lbs.

Mind-boggling that even when they try to do their job, they fail.

so im on FB and this pops up just now

"so pissed at SO police. Going to the station tomorrow for some complaining. basically just called them and they hung up on me"

As a father of a daughter who is my whole world (even though she thinks I am a moron), I am so, so sorry that this happened. My heart goes out to this student and to the SHU community.

Jim

The students need to protest with SHU and South Orange Police. My heart goes out to the victim and her family. We should never accept this.

The students also should use the escort services provided which I am sure exist at SHU. They do at most other college campuses. Use the resources provided as much as you can and that demand will push security too.

If you want to look at any college, they provide crime reports and unfortunately most schools do have occurences of violent crimes just like this on campus, because you have young good looking, naive students there and unfortunately that is who criminals target. Be aware of your surroundings. This is not an SHU only problem. It's everywhere on college campuses. They should have our criminal justice majors do a special report on how this can be avoided in the future and make recommendations to local police too.

Oh the perception of Temple being safe? One of the roughest neighborhoods in Philly surround both of those campuses. Much, much worse than the neighborhood SHU is in. Much worse.
