Lawrenceville, N.J. -- After creating dozens of chances individually, senior Natalie Tavana (Middletown, Conn.) scored a goal in the 67th minute that lifted the Seton Hall women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Rider on Sunday evening.
Seton Hall (2-1-1) finished with a dominant 24-5 advantage in shots and a 10-2 edge in shots on goal. Tavana now has 19 career goals and two goals this season, both assisted by freshman Olivia Beauvois (Windsor, Conn.). Tavana set career highs with nine shots and five shots on target.
How It Happened
Seton Hall controlled the possession battle in the first half and it had put up six shots to Rider's two through the first 10 minutes. In the 11th minute, Tavana forced a turnover and found herself one-on-one with the keeper. The keeper dove and made contact with Tavana's foot, drawing a penalty kick opportunity. Pucci stepped to the spot and delivered a strike that went off the center of the crossbar and back into play, keeping the score knotted at 0-0.
The Pirates continued to create opportunities in the first 10-plus minute of the second half where they put up seven shots and didn't allow a single Rider shot. Rider's first shot on goal came 61 minutes into the game but it was saved by freshman Avery Strohecker (Riding, Va.). More than five minutes later, Beauvois possessed in the Pirates' attacking half and sent a shot that reached the outside of the six-yard box. Tavana was able to get a foot on the attempt and it ricocheted into the goal.
