SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Graduate student Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) collected a double-double and Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) had a match-high 12 kills as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team swept Providence, 3-0 (25-20, 25-21, 25-18), Saturday in Walsh Gym.

The Hall has now won nine consecutive sets and improves to 5-9 in the BIG EAST Conference, keeping its hopes of a postseason berth alive.

Klungel had a match-high 33 assists to go with 11 digs, four kills and three blocks in another monster all-around performance. Roberts-Navarro had a match-best 12 kills to go with eight digs. Junior Mason Woo (Burbank, Calif.) tallied a match-high 17 digs.

Notably, senior Jenna Walsh (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) came off the bench mid-way through the second set and was an immediate spark for the Pirates. Walsh finished with seven kills and only one attack error.

SET 1:
The opening set was the closest of the match and featured 10 ties and six lead changes. Both teams had an attack percentage under .080 in an underwhelming first stanza. Trailing 17-16, The Hall scored four straight points, and an ace by Reagan Merk (Huntington Beach, Calif.) gave it a 20-17 lead. PC cut their deficit to 21-20, but the Pirates closed out the opening set with four straight points. A block by Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) put The Hall in set point and another by Subasili and Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) won the set for the Pirates.

SET 2:
Providence got off to a hot start in set two, scored six of the first seven points and held the lead for the majority of the set. Down 19-14, Seton Hall shocked the Friars by closing out the set with a thrilling 11-2 run. Four of the 11 points were scored on kills by the newly inserted Walsh.

SET 3:
The Hall never trailed in the third set and had an impressive .405 attack percentage. Trailing 14-8, Providence made one final run, a 5-1 burst, to cut their deficit to 15-13. The Pirates regrouped, however, and their lead never got lower than three points the rest of the set. Leading 20-17, The Hall closed out the match with five of the next six points. A kill by Grace Turner (La Grange Highlands, Ill.) put Seton Hall in match point, and a block by Turner and Walsh, put the match in The Hall's win column.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS:

• Klungel had a match-high 33 assists to go with 11 digs, four kills and three blocks.

South Orange, N.J. — The Seton Hall men's basketball team had a late lead but couldn't hold on as the Pirates lost to Fordham at the buzzer, 57-56, inside historic Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.

Yacine Toumi scored 12 points on 5-of-5 shooting from the floor for the Pirates (1-1) but battled foul trouble that kept him out for most of the second half. The Rams (1-1) scored 19 points off of 15 Seton Hall turnovers and the Pirates struggled again from the free-throw line shooting 50 percent for the game (8-of-16).

How It Happened

It was an offensive struggle for the Pirates in the first four minutes before heating up from the floor. Trailing by three early, 6-3, the Pirates used an 11-1 run to take a seven-point lead with 12:40 to go before halftime. In that stretch the Pirates converted on seven consecutive field goal attempts. The Rams responded cut their deficit to one but Prince Aligibe stopped their run with a three-pointer that made it 20-16 Pirates at the 8:48 mark. The Pirates shot 43 percent from the field and went 3-of-5 from beyond the arc in the first half but Fordham did just enough to stay in it and trail by just four at halftime, 32-38.

Back-to-back baskets by Chaunce Jenkins and Godswill Erheriene started off the second for The Hall and it extended the Pirates' lead to eight, 36-28. The eight-point would be the Pirates' largest of the game and the Rams called a timeout to stifle momentum. Fordham answered out of the timeout with consecutive three-pointers that made it a two-point game, 36-34. Fordham took its first lead of the game since the 16:10 mark of the first half with 9:03 to go in the game, 46-45, after making one of two free throws.

WIth 4:59 left, Isaiah Coleman would score Seton Hall's next five points on a corner three-pointer and two made free throws that gave the Pirates a two-point lead, 53-51. Head coach Shaheen Holloway called a full timeout with 1:28 left and the Pirates leading 53-52 and Aligbe made a tough layup off of a play designed for him that made it a three-point Seton Hall lead. Jenkins was fouled with 22 seconds left after grabbing an offensive rebound. With Fordham in the penalty, Jenkins went to the line for a one-and-one and made only one of two that made it a two possession lead for the Pirates. The Rams wouldn't go away though as they drew a foul in the act shooting behind the three-point line and made all three free-throws that cut its deficit to one, 56-55, with 16 seconds left. After a Seton Hall turnover, Fordham's Jackie Johnson III converted the game-winning layup as time expired that gave the Rams the 57-56 win.

• The loss was the Pirates' first non-conference regular season loss in Walsh Gym since a 65-60 defeat to Fordham on Dec. 16, 1989.
• The Pirates are now 27-30 all-time against Fordham.
• With six points on Saturday, Jenkins now has 984 career points.
• Aligbe now has 12 career double-figure scoring games and two this season.
• Toumi now has 20 career-double figure scoring games.

QUEENS, N.Y. – Despite a strong second half, Seton Hall's men soccer team fell 2-0 against St. John's at Benson Stadium in the BIG EAST championship quarterfinals.

The Pirates opened the first half exchanging physicals blows with St. John's as both teams began feeling each other out. The Red Storm struck first with a 25th minute goal off of chaotic play in the box that saw one shot being blocked before the rebound was sent past the Pirates' netminder. The Pirates' offensive pressure increased in the second half, outshooting their opposition, but an 84th minute goal from St. John's would put the game out of reach and result in a 2-0 loss for the Pirates and their elimination from the BIG EAST Championship.

With the loss, The Hall moves to 11-6-1 on the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The beginning stages of this match were befitting of a playoff clash between two rivals. Neither team was able to get in a position to launch a good shot in the first 13 minutes, exchanging fouls and throw-ins in favor of field position. The Pirates held possession for the majority of the time, but only managed one shot during that span.

In the 25th minute, a Red Storm run into the Pirates box by Miguel Diaz broke the tie. Diaz's blocked shot was collected by Julian Jakopovic who struck it past Matias Molina to the far post, putting the Johnnies up 1-0. Within a minute, the Pirates had were on the offensive. Til Kauschke launched a shot from the edge of the box, but it blocked before it could reach the goal.

The Pirates spent the early stages of the second half pressing the Red Storm's defense and finding potential holes. In the 57th minute, the Pirates earned their best chance of the night. Hugo Gerbore trailed behind the play and launched a shot from just outside, but Alec McLachlan made the save for the Red Storm. After that, Jack Kossoudji and Agustin Resch found their own individual chances in the 79th and 81st minute, respectively. However, blocked shots and saves ended those strong scoring opportunities before a second touch could be had.

By the time the final 10 minutes arrived, the Pirates offensive press became dangerous for both the Johnnies and themselves. That danger would come to pass not long after. In the 84th minute, St John's reversed field on a strong Pirates attack with a long pass and began pressuring Matias Molina in goal. Molina managed two saves, but the Johnnies' Thomas Lamaille managed to sneak the third shot by Molina to extend their lead to 2-0.

The Pirates final opportunity came in the 87th minute when Jon Vignir Petturson launched a ball from outside a chaotic box, but it sailed over the crossbar, ending the Pirates final chance of the night. After three more minutes, the final whistle blew, eliminating Seton Hall from the BIG EAST Championship with a 2-0 defeat.

This is gonna to be a long growing season. I know people are going to go on daw but that last pass should not happen. Evade the defense make them chase and foul.

Check out my postgame discussion with Steve and Mike, two other die hard Big East fans who I have sold on being casual Pirate fans. This was ugly, but the team will get better as the season comes along. The sky is not falling just yet.

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Senna Roberts-Navarro (Honolulu, Hawaii) had a match-high 14 kills to lift the Seton Hall women's volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-17, 25-19, 25-23) sweep of Connecticut on Friday in Walsh Gymnasium.

Off the heels of a sweep of Xavier on Sunday, the Pirates turned in another marquee performance, using a.333 attack percentage for its second consecutive three-set masterpiece. The Pirates have not been eliminated from BIG EAST Tournament contention and are quickly making up ground.

A replay of today's match will be shown on SNY on Saturday, Nov. 9 at 10:00 a.m.

Roberts-Navarro finished with a match-best 14 kills to go with seven digs and only three attack errors. Graduate student Maddie Klungel (Napa, Calif.) collected 31 assists, nine digs and three kills, while junior libero Mason Woo (Burbank, Calif.) had a team-best 12 digs.

SET 1:
With the score tied at four early in set one, The Hall scored three in a row and never trailed again. Leading 12-9, the Pirates scored six of the next eight points and a kill by Perri Lucas (Chicago, Ill.) gave them a commanding 18-11 advantage. A kill by Maddy Loiselle (Tampa, Fla.) provided the punctuation on a 25-17 first set victory.

SET 2:
Trailing 10-8 in set two, The Hall scored five straight, and a block by Roberts-Navarro and Asli Subasili (Tekirdag, Turkiye) put it on top, 13-10. UConn cut its deficit to 16-15, but Seton Hall responded with a 6-1 run, and another kill by Roberts-Navarro extended its lead to 22-16. From there, the Pirates cruised to a 25-19 set-two victory. The Pirates had a remarkable .478 attack percentage in the second set, fueled by six kills from Roberts-Navarro.

SET 3:
Although Seton Hall never trailed in the third set, the Huskies made it close late. Down 14-6, Connecticut went on a 7-1 burst to cut its deficit to 15-13. A kill by Roberts-Navarro extended The Hall's advantage to 22-16, but UConn scored six in a row to tie the set at 22. A kill by Roberts-Navarro gave the lead back to Seton Hall and a block by Loiselle and Subasili put it in match point, 24-22. After a UConn point, the 14th and final kill by Roberts-Navarro sealed the Pirates' sweep.
