Congrats to Jerry C and his lovely wife

Jerry celebrated his 30th anniversary recently.

He posted this on Facebook.

To celebrate 30 years as a couple, Diana and I took the kids to Ocean City. During our first summer together, Di wanted to ride the giant Ferris wheel at Gillian's Wonderland, and I did it without telling her that I was terrified of heights. (I guess love conquers all?)

Sufficiently traumatized, and having successfully wooed the girl, I refused to ride it every subsequent summer -- until this weekend.

With Gillian's closing for good this fall, I decided it was time to close the loop. It was not easy, but to quote Ferris Bueller, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don't stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.”

There was one more shot at this, kids included this time, and I did not want to miss it.

The 10 most watched Big East games from last year (Or maybe just through January 15)

1725543068229-jpeg.103324

Actually, I suspect there may have been other games that might make this list since it seems like January 15 is the last game.

In any event, I thought this was interesting information because it shows how Big East teams can draw if you put them on a major linear network. When they do comparisons of ratings between conferences, the Big East numbers are suppressed by the fact that we have so many games on FS1 and FS2.

Also, it reminded me of what a great game the Marquette Purdue game was last year. Marquette came with a bucket of knocking off the number two team in the nation in an early season game.

(For what it's worth the Big East Tournament championship game had 1.68 million viewers.)

Kauschke Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, Pétursson Also Recognized

resize

NEW YORK - After scoring the lone goal to help the Seton Hall men's soccer team defeat Manhattan, 1-0, freshman Til Kauschke (Hamburg, Germany) has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday. This is the second straight week that the Pirates have earned one of the conference's top weekly honors.

In addition, sophomore Jon Vigunr Pétursson (Selfoss, Iceland) was recognized on the BIG EAST's weekly honor roll for his part in helping the Pirates beat UAlbany and complete a shutout against Manhattan.

Kauschke has been aggressive in his shot taking so far this season, and it paid dividends this past Sunday when he one-timed a pass from Jared Smith (Longfellow, Mass.) in the box, blasting it past the Jaspers goalkeeper in the 68th minute. It was his first career goal.

Pétursson was solid as a defensive midfielder centerback in both the Manhattan game and the 2-1 win over UAlbany. After Sam Bjork was tripped in the box with 48 seconds remaining in the second half of a 1-1 match with the Great Danes, it was Pétursson's name that was called to take the penalty kick, and he converted to give the Pirates the 2-1 win.

Kauschke, Pétursson and the Pirates have started 3-0-0 for the second straight season and look to start 4-0-0 for the first time since 2008 when they host Columbia Friday at Owen T. Carroll Field at 6:56 p.m. The game is free for all to attend.

NCAA considering changes to redshirt eligibility, National Letter of Intent as part of sweeping review

Major changes to longstanding NCAA protocols surrounding eligibility and amateurism are proposed

By David Cobb

A modified version of the NCAA rule allowing football players to compete in up to four regular-season games during their redshirt year could be coming to other sports. The concept is part of several potential changes to NCAA eligibility rules that may be implemented as part of the historic House vs. NCAA settlement, according to documents obtained by Yahoo Sports.

It's become commonplace in college football for players to appear in four games — or 33% of a team's regular-season contests — during their freshman season and then be considered redshirt freshmen the following season. If the 33% mark were applied to basketball, that would allow players to participate in roughly 10 games without losing a season of eligibility.

If the NCAA chooses to adopt the principle for other sports, sport-specific groups would set the exact threshold of game participation, according to Yahoo. In theory, however, it would afford basketball coaches the chance to give freshmen in-game reps during nonconference action in November or in blowouts without blowing an entire season worth of eligibility for the player.

The potential change is among several alterations to eligibility standards that could be coming in the wake of the House settlement. Among the other proposals addressed in the documents would be a measure allowing athletes to retain their eligibility even if they were paid for competing outside of college sports before enrolling.

An elimination of the National Letter of Intent is also being proposed with a new model that brings a player's recruitment to an end, according to multiple reports. Under that new proposed model, the "core benefits" of the NLI will be instead incorporated into financial aid and scholarship agreements.

The NCAA Division I Council is set to review the documents during a call this week.

OT: Retired Numbers

This topic has gotten some good traction around here in the past, wondering the thoughts about the NY Giants unretiring #1 from Ray Flaherty for rookie Malik Nabers?

The Flaherty family embraced it, similar to Richie Regan with Andre Barrett at SHU.

Personally this whole topic is simply about recognizing your all-time greats, which is what organizations should do. I think it’s fine to retire them or unretire them or just put them up to recognize a player but not remove them from circulation, whatever. But I know others are very rigid on this.

Seton Hall and Ball State will meet for the first time on Friday.

The Cardinals are coming off a 17-15 season in 2023, which included an impressive 13-5 mark in the Mid-American Conference. Ball State was upset in five sets in the quarterfinals of the MAC Tournament, but qualified for the National Invitational Volleyball Championship. In the NIVC, the Cardinals defeated Middle Tennessee State in four sets before ending their season with a five-set loss to Clemson.

This season, Ball State was picked to finish third in the 12-team MAC according to the 2024 Preseason Coaches Poll. Representing the Cardinals on the Preseason All-MAC Team were senior setter Megan Wielonski and redshirt sophomore outside Aniya Kennedy. Weilonski was the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2021 and MAC Setter of the Year in 2022.

SCOUTING FLORIDA ATLANTIC
The Pirates will also face Florida Atlantic University for the first time in program history on Friday.

The Owls are coming off a 20-13 record in 2023 which included a 12-7 mark in the American Athletic Conference. Although FAU didn't qualify for the AAC Tournament, they participated in the NIVC, falling in the opening round to UT Arlington.

Florida Atlantic was picked to finish fifth in the 13-team AAC in 2024, according to its preseason coaches' poll. Senior outside hitter Valeria Rosado was a unanimous selection to the AAC Preseason All-Conference Team. Katelynn Robine is back for 2024 as the team's leader in kills per set, 2.35, among returnees.

Bryant is coming off a stellar 2023 season with a final record of 19-12. Down the stretch of the season, the Bulldogs went 7-2 and finished with the No. 4 seed. Their season came to an end, however, when they lost to the eventual America East champion UMBC Retrievers in the conference semifinals.

Bryant was picked to finish fourth this season, according to the six-team AEC preseason coaches' poll. Senior outside hitter Aubrey LaPour was selected to the America East Preseason All-Conference Team. LaPour is coming off a phenomenal junior campaign in 2023 which saw her lead the Black and Gold with 387 kills (2nd best in conference) and earn First Team All-America East honors.
