NOTES YOU NEED TO KNOW

  • Following an opening night victory over Monmouth on Wednesday, the Pirates return to the court on Saturday where they will face the Saint Peter's Peacocks at 12 p.m.
  • A new head coach is roaming the sidelines for Seton Hall for the first time in 11 years as head coach Shaheen Holloway '00 is in his alma mater.
  • Holloway is the first Seton Hall graduate to lead the men's basketball program since all-time great Richie Regan '53 led the Pirates from 1960-70.
  • The last time Holloway was on the Seton Hall bench was as an associate head coach from 2010-18.
  • In that time span, the Pirates registered four 20-win seasons, three NCAA Tournament appearances and won the 2016 BIG EAST Tournament title.
  • One year after taking Saint Peter's on a miracle run to the Elite Eight, Holloway will face his former club in his second game as head coach at Seton Hall.
  • Seton Hall is 64-24 all-time against Saint Peter's in a series that dates back to 1932.
  • The last meeting between the two North Jersey institutions took place on Dec. 12, 2017 inside Walsh Gymnasium, an 84-61 victory for the Pirates.
  • Holloway went 44-32 against MAAC competition in four seasons in Jersey City, including three consecutive seasons with double-digit conference victories for the first time since the early 1980s.
  • Holloway has never started a season 2-0 in four seasons as a head coach.
  • The Pirates are 81-11 (.879) all-time at Prudential Center against non-conference opponents and has won their last 12 games against non-league foes at The Rock.
  • Seton Hall has a wealth of experience on the roster with five returning Pirates from last season and five transfers that combine for 13 years of Div. I basketball experience.
  • In total, this veteran Seton Hall team has appeared in 775 career collegiate games and combined for 6,019 points, 2,971 rebounds and 1,072 assists.
  • With the Davis' (Dre and Tae) and the Harris' (Jamir and JaQuan), Seton Hall is one of three schools (Clemson and Kansas City) that has two sets of brothers on the same team.

Good and bad

Good -

Bench play - The bench is legit. They will not score this much every night but seeing the effort and cohesiveness on defense gives you hope that we won’t get torched in the Big East by virtue of depth.

Tyrese getting aggressive early - this guy is very coachable early in the game and will step up when the initial game plan is to get him looks. Need him to become that guy for the whole game this year. Too often he fades as the game unwinds and his size and length are too important to not impose on the other team.

Tae Davis - this frosh has fire. He looks to score and rebounds his own shot with a willingness to move the ball afterward which speaks to his maturity. Free throws could use some work.

Dawes - dude is a little killer who is not afraid to get his hands dirty. Don’t know if he is going to contribute a ton in the scoring column but love to see a guy that plays with that much intensity.

Sha - he is a pleasure to watch on the sideline and comes off as extremely focused and involved compared to previous coaches. You can see his brain working in between plays and it shows in the X’s and O’s. Again this was against Monmouth but this is great to see.

Bad -

Free throws - shot 59%

Rebounds - we were almost out rebounded by a much less athletic team. That cannot happen going forward as we have the horses to handily win that battle most nights.

Kadary in foul trouble - Can’t have him off the floor. He is going to have to play a ton of minutes running both the starting unit and the bench unit. He’ll contribute on defense and he’ll get his points. The real value here is stabilizing the offense and making plays.

Starters getting bodied by a smaller team - we won the game handily but did not like seeing our big guys getting pushed around down low.

Ndefo - just looked out of place at times. Going to rewatch the game but as a senior transfer the team needs him to help stabilize the group. Guy can box out anyone in the league clearly but needs to show he can hang on both ends of the floor in order to start.

The Top 20 - Monmouth

This will only be posted for games I see live.

In no particular order

1. Not buying it.
Sha said he had little reaction to the crowd cheering his name as he took the court as he was so focused he hardly heard them.

2. Not buying it part 2.
In the post game Sha said the St Peter's contest Saturday is no different than any other game to him.

3. The death of isolation ball, Willard style.
To that I can only say thank the lord. Excellent ball and player movement with no particular player being the focus.

4. More NJ games?
Sha noted that why should we bring in out of the area lower tier teams to the Rock when we can play NJ mid majors?

5. Loved the way we started.
Got the ball inside to Samuel twice for easy buckets but then we went away from that. Possibly because Monmouth swarmed inside when the ball was thrown in the paint and possibly because Samuel didn't remain aggressive. A point that Holloway made in the post game when he said he needs Samuel to be more of a force inside.

6. Was he as bad as his stats seemed to indicate.
Well, yes and no. Ndefo struggled mightily on offense. In part according to Holloway because he has been injured and is working himself back into an offensive grove. But if you watched the game closely on the other side of the court he was a menace. Playing with intensity and disrupting the Monmouth offense, including a couple of reaching behind the back of a dribbler deflecting the ball to other Pirates.

7. Flag salute.
New Flag Man. A sophomore who now is running around the cheerleaders with a significantly lighter flag. He had one small issue, there were two cameramen in his way forcing him to alter his route.

8. Wire to wire.
First game and had the lead for 39:19 minutes.

9. Technical difficulties.
The scoreboard was screwed up most of the first half. That delayed the game for about 10 minutes before the refs decided to play on as at least the shot clock was working. That eventually became the reason for the blowout as Monmouth quickly scored when play resumed cutting the SHU lead to 20-15. With Monmouth underneath their own basket and about to make a layup to cut the lead to 3, Richmond stripped the ball from the shooter and that led to 15 straight SHU points. Game, set and match.

10. Where was the big guy?
On the bench in street clothes. Last night despite the final score Myles Foster gave the Hall fits in the paint with his offensive rebounding. He was a thorn in the Hall's side all game long despite having the worst +/- of anyone on the court (-29). Anyone think that the equally physical Alex Yetna wasn't needed to stop the Monmouth big man?

11. They're called FREE throws for a reason.
23-39. Are you kidding me?

12. Staring lineup.
Anyone have Jamir Harris on the court for the opening tip? I certainly didn't.

13. The refs or the Hall?
Probably a little of both. Lots of whistles that slowed down the game. But how much did the intense touch and grab defense by the Hall play into that? I love the defensive intensity but eventually the roster will have to play a little smarter and cut down on the foolish fouls as the schedule revs up.

14. A touch of Tae.
Certainly not in the first half as two quick fouls sent him to the bench. But then the precocious frosh showed his wares in the second period finishing with a near double double in just 16 minutes of play. Just needs to be more efficient from the free throw line and value the ball a little better.

15. Run and gun.
Sure they often were out of control as 20 turnovers will attest to that. But clearly the pace will quicken under Sha as he wants to play fast due to his quality depth and athleticism. Hell, seems like whomever gets the defensive rebound, big men or small, will take the ball up court quickly either by head-manning the pass or dribbling it up court.

16 Respect.
Monmouth's coach King Rice is intense and has his detractors, but don't count Shaheen Holloway among them as he professed his admiration for Rice after the game calling him a big brother.

17. The go to guys?
Eventually in a tight game ideally you want to go to one or two players that you trust late. We might have multiple players who fit that role with the question being is that a good thing or a bad one.

18, Where's the weave?
Probably in Maryland as we saw a far more moderated version of that during the game with a focus of using it to an offensive advantage by cutting back door or feeding the paint instead of just passing it around the perimeter wasting precious time off the shot clock.

19. Backcourt pressure.
Wears out the opposing guards. Causes turnovers. Take a lot of time off the shot clock. SHU's version of 40 minutes of hell.

20. You might call it ugly.
I would use a different word. Ragged but entertaining in the sense that you see the potential down the road.

One W in the books.

MEDIA
The game will be streamed by Big Ten Plus with Dom Savino and Dominique Patrick on the call. As usual, the game will also be available over the airwaves at 89.5 FM WSOU and at wsou.net. Ryan Henry and Jon Heite will describe the action on the radio. Live stats will also be available.

WSOU is now also airing a postgame "Hall Line" show following its women's basketball games. Be sure to tune in after the final buzzer.

LAST GAME
Graduate Sidney Cooks (Kenosha, Wis.) and senior Sha'Lynn Hagans (Manassas, Va.) had 16 points apiece as the Pirates routed Saint Peter's, 73-39, to open the 2022-23 season in Walsh Gym on Monday.

The Hall's stout defense forced 27 turnovers and held Saint Peter's to just 27.6% shooting for the game. The game turned for good when the Pirates out-scored the Peacocks, 17-4, in the second quarter.

Cooks had a double-double with 16 points on 8-for-13 shooting to go with a career-high 16 rebounds, three assists and three blocks. Hagans, playing in her first regular season game in a Pirate uniform, had 16 points on an efficient 7-for-11 shooting and a game-high four steals.

Seton Hall All-Time vs. the Scarlet Knights: Rutgers leads, 36-10
Last Meeting: Rutgers 70, Seton Hall 45 (F) – December 8, 2017

SCOUTING RUTGERS
Friday's contest will be the 37th meeting in the history of Seton Hall and Rutgers with the teams being former BIG EAST opponents before the Scarlet Knights left for the Big Ten. Rutgers has dominated the all-time series, owning a 36-10 all-time record. The Scarlet Knights have won four of the last five meetings, including a 70-45 victory in their most-recent game on December 8, 2017.

Rutgers is coming off an 11-20 season a year ago, which includes a 3-14 mark in the Big Ten. After routing Penn State in the opening round of the Big Ten Tournament, the Scarlet Knights season came to an end with a 66-54 loss to No. 14 Indiana in the second round.

It's a new era for Rutgers women's basketball, following the retirement of C. Vivian Stringer in April. Coquese Washington takes over as head coach but will have a roster of only eight players to oversee. This year's squad features five newcomers: freshmen Kaylene Smikle and Antonia Bates along with transfers Kassondra Brown, Kai Carter, and Abby Streeter. The three returners from last year's squad include senior Awa Sidibe in addition to juniors Erica Lafayette and Chyna Cornwell.

Rutgers opened the 2022-23 season with a 73-68 victory over Hofstra on Monday. Five players scored in double-figures led by Awa Sidibe and Kai Carter, who had 16 points apiece. The Scarlet Knights shot 54.9% from the field for the game and were 4-for-9 from three-point range.

UP NEXT
Seton Hall will return to the friendly confines of Walsh Gymnasium to host Ivy League champion Princeton on Monday, Nov. 14. Game time is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Coach Holloway

Watching our new coach is as much fun as watching the new players. His head is totally into the game, the hand gestures and facial expressions are a language we have not seen since PJ. He sees the basketball court like a good chess player sees the chess board. At one point, I believe Sanders passed the ball and then looked at the coach who was waving his arms. Coach was telling him to cut quickly to the basket after the pass. Going to take a couple of months but I believe the floor general is in the process of teaching the kids how to see the play or move to the basket before it happens. We are truly blessed to have this coach in my opinion. I know it’s early but I’m excited to see where this is heading. The players from last years team appear ready to play. I do wonder about Richmond, he needs to buy into the program and the new coach. I suspect the coach is pushing him hard right now.

Monmouth 6 Pack

This board needs a little spicing up…so the oracle is back!!!!!

1. Lets start with the biggest positive. We finally get to see freshmen get on the court and both were very impressive. Tae Davis has stud written all over him and Sanders might be the shooter we need.

2. Biggest negative. KC Ndeffo. He looked like a MAAC player out there. Hopefully just some nerves on his end.

3. Love to have a coach that shows emotion on the sideline. Sha has no off switch and will work this team to the bone.

4. Super ugly game and the refs didnt help. So many early fouls led to foul trouble and just a game that had zero flow to it.

5. Our rebounding is going to be a major concern when we play the big boys.

6. Jackson needs to be on the floor as much as possible. Richmond, Dawes, Davis, Davis, Jackson would be my lineuo

Bryant basketball coach defends running up the score in 108-point win over D3 school

https://sports.yahoo.com/bryant-bas...-108-point-win-over-d-3-school-171833390.html

Bryant University men’s basketball beat Thomas College 147-39 Monday night. Bryant head coach Jared Grasso defended umm....the result.

I gotta say, he made a fair point or two in defending himself to the press. However, it goes without saying, absolutely no one is going to shed a tear the next time his team is completely massacred by a power conference or even a mid-major school. In fact, I think I'd kinda like to see that now. I might just take a special interest keeping tabs on his team to see that it happens.

"I'm never going to tell my guys to stop playing hard... whether we're playing Thomas or we're playing Kentucky.”

I hope they do get their chance to play Kentucky. I really do. I hope Cal steps on Grasso's throat....and continues to exert pressure.
