A blown chance

No on talks on this board more about the randomness of the tournament than me

But perception is what it is and that was a choke job..they couldn’t even make a layup after all that media..they were a two seed! And they lost to the “choke-job artist” himself in coach cal!

Bad bad bad loss
Come on man. They lost to a coach that has a national championship and should have another. That coach brought Memphis and UMass to the final 4. No question St Johns was tight and had a bad shooting day.

You are way off base

I think Arkansas exposed the weakness we all thought would be St. John’s undoing and that’s clutch shot making and hitting perimeter shots.

I think St. John’s has survived this way all year because the Big East was the weakest it’s been in a long time and lesser teams couldn’t make the Jonnie’s pay.

Who knows—maybe if they lost the last regular season game against Marquette they get a bit of adversity to work through. Maybe it could have helped in the long run.

Their game with us 2 weeks ago was a warning sign IMHO. 9-21 from foul line including 4 missed front ends of 1 and 1 and we were still in the game..

And it’s a 10 seed in Arkansas that even without Theiro has more pro and high end talent than SJU does. They are ones with the McDAA types.
When I reflect on that season now, 30+ years later, I feel good about it. Don’t you?

No, I was a senior that year. We had legitimate Final Four aspirations.

Wow ok

Coach hasn’t been to a second weekend in 6 years..was literally run out of town and (as we all know) has one of the worst NCAAT loses in recent history..but that’s fine

2 seeds are ok with losing in the round of 32 now? That’s fine..got it!

I’ll say it again..Arkansas didn’t even play well and handled them with relative ease

and the message is how they are reloading with 2 more transfers coming in this week?

You’re receiving multiple citations from the St Johns police.

Yes but 30+ years later I think most of us not only think fondly of that team but we would do anything to get it back.

I’m also a huge Yanks fan as some know or recall. I was at game 5 this year. Awful game to be at. Do I think Judge is a “choker” because he missed a ball and had a bad postseason on balance? I don’t. I’m thankful to have him.
i am a dodger fan and our choking in the playoffs after dominating reg seasons sucked. the season was fun to watch but after we choked it tainted it all.

93 is a huge lost opportunity for me.

And, comparing 93 to this sju year is a bad comparison. we had amazing 89 and 91 seasons in our pocket. rp and sj have coins in their picket.

To continue with the baseball theme. Now how comical would it be for Chicago White Sox fans to start talking shit about the dodgers during the playoffs last year?

Blown chance but will have more chances to come.
Pitino reloading in the next month with 4 big time players to play with Zuby and Luis
The two mentioned above and 2 other studs that I think will send shockwaves through rest of the league if finalized
Luis is not coming back to the Johnnies.

And when an 11 seed Gonzaga beats a 6 seed SHU you are one of the posters that complain about the lower seed being under seeded, the selection committee, the start time, the venue etc.

You want to say the coach's team was tight and didn't play smart fine. They had their worst offensive game at the worst time and still could have won

I never complained about any of that

We were a dog when that game tipped btw..was St. John’s a dog yesterday?

They were a 2 seed! Are we losing our minds here

They still could have won?! Did you watch that game? They got handled pretty well..and Arkansas had a pretty tough offensive game too or they would have won by 20+

The game was 68-64 with over 2 minutes left. Then it was 70-64 for a strech to under a minute while SJU could not hit a shot. What game were you watching?

Anyone wants to question Rick on his sitting Luis I have no problem. You just make stuff up like you do with Sha.

ability to look at this from both ways...first half wilcher and kadary get 2 fouls and zuby kept them in the game. 2nd half, not sure especially from the 12 aor 13 min mark to 4 min mark, zuby was not involved in any pick n roll or post up chances, and he was working his tail off away from the ball getting position. Yes Luis was just an awful shot and akadary and wilcher never got in a flow but the team's secondary defense, boxing out, rebounding effort was poor. Not making shots and not scoring lead to adverse situations but the ability to overcome the adversity is the key.

I just love how the board now hates St. Johns and their fans yet fawns over UConn even before one of SHU own got there.

I am from Queens and loved the 80s St. John's teams. Since graduating SHU, they have always been my #2 team.

When a lowlife like Pitino takes over, and he and his buddy from the racetrack team up and crow for the last year how they took our best player and can get anyone they want, AND insinuate that we're never going to be competitive again then F them. I'm tickled pink that they lost in the first weekend.

At the end of the day your weakness will be exposed. Not sure why Louis Jr. played out of character, but 2-22 from three and I believe 9 missed free throws told the story. Missing so many follow up shots off 28 offensive rebounds killed them. Tough Arkansas team, but SJU laid an egg in most important game of the year.

I have no problem with any of that. Personally I would rather root for St. Johns instead of UConn. I am not a slick Rick fan or apologist. He is a great coach that is it with me.

And I can't figure out how Repole keeps selling beverage companies to Coca cola for billions of dollars. And on the horse racing side he has been incredibly lucky. They say to become a millionaire in horse racing start with 2 or 3 million.

You can be a good businessman and boorish slob at the same time.

It's pretty simple. They're NYC and we're not.

They are the only CBB team in the NY area team that the media cares about. We're Hofstra, Manhattan, Iona or Fordham compared to them.

Like it or not, that's reality.

We actually got more attention I feel this year than in past years when we were more successful. It was just the wrong attention this year.
I'd disagree with this. We were largely ignored other than game highlights and the occasional NIL potshot.

When we were good we received more attention. Even Braziller deigned to come across the river for our games. Now he does little more than kiss Pitino's a**.

Of course. we also had a coach who didn't avoid the media like the plague even if he didn't love it.

Agree. When we're good we can dominate NYC media especially when SJU was down as they have been for 25 years prior to this season. That said Rick and Repole are here to stay and we need to step up our game in response to their resurgence.

Dominate? In my lifetime, besides the 1989 run (and we were a national story that year), I don't recall anything of significance. We got some attention when we were really good in other years (early 90s, some Amaker), and crumbs when we were decent to good under Willard.

St Johns was dead meat from the time Louie left until this year.

stop. they had some good years under Jarvis and Lavin
There is no point, lol. I must have been living as a Hall fan in a different part of the country and glossed over us "dominating" the NY media market the past 35+ years I've been a die hard.

We had a couple years of good coverage. It did happen but we didn’t dominate the NY market by any stretch and we most likely never will unless we get a coach synonymous with the Knicks, for example like a Patrick Ewing.

We're a suburban stepchild so we'll never "dominate." NYC media. When we are good we are covered more. When we are not, we're basically invisible.

BTW, watching Channel 11 morning news on Monday AM. Their sports report consisted of highlights of SJU being eliminated two days ago and a quick clip of the PSAL champs.

We need to win and pack The Rock. There’s enough media outlets on social media these days where the conventional NYC hitlist is less important.

Their season is similar to our 2015-16 in the sense that they came back from a moribund program to relevancy but disappointed in the big tournament. Theirs way more dramatic.
