Tough as nails, defensive stalwart, locker room leader, heart and soul. Those are just a few catch phrases used to describe the Seton Hall point guard.

June 2, 2017, doesn't seem like anything but another normal date, but upon further inspection that late spring day became all so important to the Seton Hall program when a slender guard from Sacred Heart University decided to 'take his talents' to South Beach, er Orange.

Yes, Quincy McKnight, Q to most everyone, announced he was transferring from the Northeast Conference to the Big East. A decision that at the time brought little more than a ho hum from Pirate Nation.

How wrong they all were.

The 6-foot-3 (real height) guard from Bridgeport averaged a team-high 18.9 points and was a First Team All-Northeast Conference pick as a sophomore.

After deciding to transfer McKnight visited Penn State in May and seriously considered offers from Nevada and Santa Clara, but he eventually traveled to Seton Hall on a Thursday and 24 hours later his mind was made up. He wanted to be a Pirate and play in one of the best conferences in the county. .

“I just decided there was a track record at Seton Hall, and for what they do for their players after college … they help them succeed,”

McKnight was rated a 2 star player by most recruiting sites coming out of high school so clearly the news of his commitment didn't make much of a splash. But what Seton Hall fans have come to know since then was echoed by his former college coach Brian Shanahan after watching his former star guard play a game in the Big East when he described this scenario......

As a senior at The Phelps School Quincy McKnight fouled out of a key game against rival Westtown School with 40 seconds left and his team protecting a lead. Before he took his seat on the bench, McKnight huddled his teammates up and exhorted them to finish it out.

“He wanted to win so bad, that was the kid you'll see making steals, deflections — those are the winning plays that you need.”

That scenario played out countless times in McKnight's three seasons in Blue. In practice and in the locker room, unseen by the fan base, and on the court in full view of the team's supporters.

Q was special. Maybe not stat sheet special, but special to those that understand all facets of the game, as McKnight in his time at SHU was honored by the conference coaches being chosen 2nd team All Big East this past season and by the sport's writers in the metropolitan area last season being chosen for the All Haggerty second team. An award he'll no doubt (at least) repeat again this season.

When Q committed to Seton Hall the confident and prideful McKnight posted this tweet....

Three years later it's still pinned to the top of his page.

Rating?

I went back and forth on McKnight between an A- and a B+. The later grade because his play in the last few games, especially on the defensive end was not up to the standards that came to be expected. But that was probably a combination of his being worn down by the long season and more importantly the effects suffered from tendinitis in his knees. An injury that forced him out of a late season game at the Rock vs St John's.

When taking that into consideration it's clear to me that Quincy 'Q' McKnight earned a solid A- and in retrospect was closer to an A than a B+.

Pirate fans love Q but probably won't really appreciate him until he's gone. He's that kind of young man.

Final Rating: A-
