I have a daughter who has applied and been accepted. She Is seriously considering Seton Hall. Can anyone provide insight into the school, academics, social life, etc.

Welcome to Seton Hall!

What is your Daughter looking for?

What is important to her in her college experience?

BTW, any chance she has a brother who is immediately eligible and can play point guard? Lol

She is looking for business with a marketing focus. How effective is the program at Seton Hall is giving her a strong liberal arts foundation to form a basis for thought?

I graduated in 2005, so I don't have my finger on the pulse of day-to-day life, but I do head back to campus frequently and can offer some insight.
  • The campus has drastically improved over the last 13 years, particularly the rec center and academic buildings.
  • South Orange has also improved a great deal. There are a lot of student-friendly events and places to go in the town, including a movie theater and performing arts center. From what I've been told, that's been a game changer for student involvement in the town.
  • Outside of campus and South Orange, it's very easy to get to New York. Obviously the city has evolved quite a bit in the last 13 years, but when I was in school, trips to the city were most popular during freshman year (novelty of being so close) and senior year (everybody is over 21). There's always so much going on there and it's a quick train ride away.
  • My major was in business with a communication minor (which is now its own school). Both programs were challenging and I definitely learned a lot. If you want more details on either school, I can give some insights. Also, I have gotten very connected with diplomacy graduates since I go to a lot of alumni functions in D.C. That school is one that produces some great results after graduation.
  • Finally, I always enjoyed the smaller campus and class sizes. You can get involved in so much because you don't get swallowed up by a massive campus and enrollment. The professors get to know you and it's a pretty close-knit community.

If you have any specific questions, I can do my best to answer them. Wishing the best to your daughter and her college decision!

My daughter graduated in 2012 with a degree in Marketing from Stillman. She did the Leadership program also. She got a good job out of school and then 3 years later went on to the University of Maryland for an MBA. She thrived at Maryland among a strong cohort and credited Seton Hall with good preparation.

She had less flexibility to do much liberal arts. That was her choice. The Leadership program had some credit requirements as did a minor in International Business. If your daughter forgoes that, she will have plenty of flexibility to take advantage of the breadth of the University.

Her overall Seton Hall experience was very positive both in and out of the classroom. She assimilated into a good group of friends, many of which she is in touch with She turned down Villanova, Pitt, and Fordham and hence she had choice.

The factors that moved her to Seton Hall may not be applicable to your daughter. We left the choice to her. The only influence we had was to encourage a good decision process.

If Hall is high on her list, I'd encourage a sleep over with a student if she has any friends attending.

At some point, your daughter will process all her choices and will pick what feels right and what she think is best for her.

Good Luck. Go Pirates.
