Woke up to read about the Smollett “hate crime” now being investigated as a hoax. Here we go again. Rush to judgement; MSM, politicians and celebrities pile on and then reality hits. All have done a disservice to those real victims of real crimes. The popular line we hear today is “words matter”. Well, they do and so does being accountable for those words. We will now see maybe 5% of the same passion if any decrying this hoax as we saw from the original statements.

Glad now waiting for all the facts: Democratic presidential candidate Cory Bookertold reporters Sunday that he would withhold judgment on the alleged attack on "Empire" actor Jussie Smollett after calling the incident "an attempted modern-day lynching" when it was first reported last month.

Don’t know how you can blame this on news. They investigate something that is being said by the mouth of a victim who is a celebrity. Of course you report it.

Now, law enforcement has a different job. That is why many times, law enforcement is slow to comment or arrest as they go through and collect the evidence. If this is a hoax, great job investigating and didn’t g the inconsistencies.

I didn't see the coverage from the news so I can't comment on how they reported it. I did see it on twitter and there were some very reactionary political and celebrity responses which is really a shame as it definitely does a disservice to actual victims. Hopefully this promotes being less reactionary overall.

Actually thought Chicago PD which has taken it's share of hits, managed the investigation and communication of it very well.

Where I fault the MSM is not reporting on it, but shaping the initiate narrative. Cable news is a joke, but even the major networks framed the attack with twitter responses from politicians and celebrities which is dumb and adds to the presumption that it was a racially motivated attack. We heard the word "alleged", but it was assumed to be racially motivated, a hate crime and a chance to blame Trump...check, check, check.

Do you think the MSM is going to report what Smollett did with the same veracity if it's show that he staged it and misled law enforcement?

Getting more bizzare...Looks like he sent the threatening letter and paid the two brothers who have been called back in by Chicago PD. Guess he will be written out of Empire.

Chicago PD Commissioner Eddie Johnson is my hero. Powerful comments today, a real leader.

Booker and Harris... what of the “modern day lynching” comments? Haven’t heard them yet apologize for the rush to judgment.

How did they cover the original report?

As one would expect. A celebrity was assaulted and they covered it. The police exonerated the two original suspects and implicated the celebrity and they covered it. The celebrity was arrested and they covered it.

That does not answer HOW they covered the original report. You're telling me what they did. I'm asking how they did it. Did they promote the narrative? Were they fair to the victim and the accused? Did they make it out to be that MAGA people are hearing the dog whistling by the president?

I had no trouble differentiating the facts from the opinions.

How the hell does Don Lemon still have a job?

Verified account@DavidRutz
.@donlemon doesn't think it's @JussieSmollett's fault he's already lost in the "court of public opinion." Thinks maybe he got bad advice. He also says @RobinRoberts did a "terrific" job interviewing Smollett.

I wish, I wish to God, I was making this up.

I had to look it up but that's not what he said.

Lemon's point was that Smollett was making a mistake by going on good morning America... That he had already lost in the court of public opinion and he wasnt helping his case and "it wasnt his fault" because he was listening to some PR person telling him to do it.

He wasnt saying that Smollett wasnt guilty or that it wasnt his fault that he made this all up.

Am I understanding you correctly? So Lemon is trying to persuade his audience that this guy is a victim of a game being played or bad work by a PR firm or person. I really hope I’m misunderstanding.

The irony is not escaping me that in a thread about quickly jumping to conclusions, people are talking about a single line from someome in a 10+ minute interview and jumping to conclusions about it.

I didn’t see it. I’m just reading about it and asking a question?

Right, go watch it and you can judge for yourself. Seemed pretty clear he was not forgiving/defending Smollett but feels bad for him because they were friends.

I could get behind a ticket of Eddie Johnson for President and Charles Barkley for VP. Straight and honest talk with a little comedy.

How lame was Harris’s tweet?

Pretty bad. Not the type of leadership I'm looking for from a candidate.
Thought the same thing. You have an opportunity to demonstrate some leadership by acknowledging how your own actions were wrong before having the facts, denounce Smollett's actions and move forward with a unifying message, but her tweet sounded like something Trump would do.

Smollett is what he is and the world is seeing it right now. He'll get a slap on the wrist and Hollywood will celebrate him. It's sad that people want to be victims in the US society right now and breaking the law seems to be OK in some cases.

I liked a recent interview they did with Maryland's Repub Governor Larry Hogan. The guy made a lot of sense, is a moderate and seems to have a handle on what matters. I hope he runs and wish Nikki Haley would run too against Trump. I wonder if its too late to get into the race but hopefully some good candidates are laying the groundwork.

On the Dem side I would consider Klubichar (sp?) and would also look at Gabbard. The rest are way too far to the left for me to even consider.

People, I don't understand the bashing of news media or even politicians who condemned this the attack when it was reported. If the story was true, it was a reprehensible attack deserving of condemnation. It is very normal to initially believe the victim when accounts like this are told. The police and prosecutors have a different job and that is to uncover the truth which can be extraordinary difficult.

Here the police investigators did a great job of uncovering the truth and this hoax of a story. I do not see the need to bash people who thought the story was true.

However, when the truth is revealed they do need to speak out. Kamala Harris was asked about this and she ducked the question. That's pretty pathetic. She is a former prosecutor and should know better. It is so easy to say that when people engage in reporting false crimes, it devalues the tragedies that real victims live through. Moreover, it takes away valuable resources in man hours of police and prosecutors to ferret out lies. These resources could have been spent investigating true victim crimes.

They should have been a caveat/safe harbor like "if true". Nobody ever said that, jumped to conclusions.

The press should be free and independent. The last two presidents have initiated policies to make the press less free. But the media themselves are no longer independent. It's not journalism anymore, it's activism. Report the news as they want it to be, not as it is.

So you think this is a recent phenomena? Hmm what about the 1970's Tawana Brawley? This has nothing to do with activism. IT is normal human behavior to empathize with a victim. Now, that the truth comes out, that person must be condemned by all, especially those who were fooled initially.

Anyone who believed Al Sharpton in the '70's was an idiot, he was a known huckster.

Yup but that won't and isn't happening, doesn't fit the narrative. Goes to activism and lack of independence. See the Covington kids as well. Glad they are suing but $250 million is frivolous.

The bashing of the news media and the liberal politicians is definitely justified in my opinion. As soon as the alleged indcident happened, they were all quick to jump on board to make it like it was Trump's fault because he causes racial tensions, and that all Trump supporters are racists, etc.. Then once it started turning that Smollett was lying, they all went into the lets wait and see before making a judgement. Sorry, cannot have it both ways and not expect to get criticized.

The media has done a great job since the very beginning covering this story from every angle.

That article totally misses the point. It’s not a matter of “how much” the media has covered the story before and after....it’s “how” it has covered the hoax.

Actually, how was it covered outside of celebrities? I dont think I saw any of it.

I'll look one up. Can you describe one of the interviews that you think missed the mark? Maybe a specific host?
I have an opinion based on what I saw. Look at it for yourself and share yours.
