Afghan Refugees Arrive in NJ

I live a stones throw from McGuire. Heard the number through there is 9500 and 25000 total throughout the U.S.

We should absolutely help those that helped us. Absolutely. That seems like a much smaller number than that though. And do you think a bunch of people that want to do us great harm are also part of that group? You’re naive if you don’t think so.

What a giant cluster this is.

Just take a look at how the "migrant crisis" in Europe after the Syrian debacle in 2014 worked out.

The West sows the seeds of its own destruction. If it weren't our nation, it would be rather comforting to know that unjust and idiotic foreign interventions have their own inherent mechanisms for delivering domestic justice.

Now that the the entire country is in Taliban hands, I think the bigger threat of terrorist migration from other exit points of the county. Iranian border for sure. The other Stans as well. After a flight to Mexico, then can simple walk across our Southern border, get a hot and cot and go about their business.

Regarding terrorist blending in with the refugees we are evacuating from Kabul, I would not call that thought a conspiracy theory. Given the chaos at the Kabul airport, I do not think it is unreasonable to consider the risk that a few of the people we transported are Taliban/al Qaeda loyal.

You think terrorists are not very bright I guess. They just took over a country while we were sleeping. Give them some credit, of course they have their people mixed inside the crowd. If you were a terrorist what would you do?

Had a chance for the first time to discuss this situation with a good friend/golfing partner who emigrated from Afghanistan after the Russian invasion in the 70's just to get his POV. He said that the country was poor yet relatively peaceful and things started to destabilize and once Russian entered the picture due to the strategic location (air base) and sitting on a wealth of minerals; that was the start. While many of the tribes/sects didn't recognize or even were aware of the government, they kept to themselves. Foreign money (arms) and intervention led to bloodshed. He said the royal family was killed or left; the government leaders were slaughtered as well. (He said he had 40 members of his family that were murdered...some just thrown out of helicopters). He added that while he felt the U.S. had a duty to enter Afghanistan after 9/11, things deteriorated even worse after we entered Iraq which took our eye of the ball there enabling the Taliban to build back a force. Had an interesting comment about both countries...Iraq is caught in time and 50 years behind the West; Afghanistan is 500 years behind. Kind of reminds me of Vietnam. A strategic piece of land that super powers tried to gain advantage and it actually started with the French occupation that ruined it for many years.

Afghanistan was neither unjust nor idiotic. You can fault the execution (I do) but the core purpose of us being there was sound.
Going to get Bin Laden was just but that was an entirely separate mission from a long term nation building exercise. For the latter revisit your Wolfowitz and the New American Century.

Does anyone honestly believe the Taliban would be blocking people trying to leave if Trump was president ? Biden is a very timid and fearful person and the world knows it.A scaredy-cat President and laughing VP ,what a combo.

so having terrorists come through our borders close to where we all live is pretty scary no?

Wrong.

Preventing a terrorist safe haven for one

Bagram Air Base for another.

While we were doing nation building, that was not why we were there.

You don't need to nation build to have an airbase. We have airbases all over the world and have placed them even in some fairly vile regimes. (Was it FDR who referred to one such dictator: "He's a son of b***h but he's our son of a b***h.)

Wolfowitz and his New American Century was a lot bigger than OBL and Afghanistan. It had absolutely nothing to do with terrorism. It was a post Cold War national vanity exercise.

It created far more terrorist safe havens than it eliminated. (In case you are keeping count, it eliminated exactly zero.) Look at Egypt, Tunisia, Libya, Syria and Iraq. All were much more hostile to Islamist terrorists under secular Arab nationalist dictators than under "democratic" systems.

If Bin Laden was not in some mountain enclave Bush and Cheney would not have given a shit about Afghanistan

I never said I supported the nation building. I support keeping the place stable and having a strategic airbase.

I understand. I didn't mean to suggest anything related to you personally.

I just meant that the argumentation was used to give a publicly acceptable face to the New American Century project (is the NeoCon playbook, written by its brains, Wolfowitz.)

Say whatever else you want ablit Putin and Russia but at least they've learned some lessons from the past:

Russia
President Vladimir Putin has said Russia will not accept Afghan refugees because he does not want militants entering the country disguised as refugees.

"We don't want militants under the disguise of refugees to appear here [in Russia] again," he said Sunday, according to the TASS news agency.

"We will do everything, in particular in contact with our Western partners, to ensure stability in Afghanistan as well. But we do not want a repeat of the situation of the 1990s and early 2000s."

Meanwhile, the naivete of Phil Murphy:

On Monday, Gov. Phil Murphy said New Jersey would be getting a “significant” number of refugees, but he didn’t offer any specific numbers.

“We will welcome Afghan refugees with open arms here in New Jersey at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst,” Murphy said in a tweet. “Our state has always served as a shining beacon of hope to the world, and we will do everything in our power to help these refugees rebuild their lives.”

Well, when you have a career that takes you to the top of a prominent organization you get to meet a lot of people in your community, in industry, in government, and beyond.

I know the man personally. You could only hope to have 1/100th of his Rolodex.
I'm sure he's a lovely man

I do not have 1/100th of his Rolodex.

The world's greatest Rolodex strikes again.
the day we have a UFO topic he'll nonchalantly claim to know an alien.

the way he qualifies his acquaintances comes off as fictitious precision.

not saying thats the case but you cant help to percieve it that way with the type of people hes frequently talking to.

But hes not president so quit living on the past. He also had 5000 talis released so stop stroking yourself to Trump.

ive never even had a basement haha! love meeting people. pandemic has nuked everything. dont even know anyone at my company because im 100% remote.

i really wish i had a job that wasnt in front of the computer. considering picking up a weekend job to make some extra money and maybe meet people.

millennials and younger are pretty much anti face to face relationships. gone are the days of sitting on the porch and having a convo with the neighbor

That all sounds like a bunch of excuses.

Other than my Florida properties, I've had basements.

The house we are currently building used Superior Walls for the basement instead of blocks or poured concrete.

Superior Walls are prefabricated sections that are lowered by crane and then bolted together. They are pre-insulated and fitted with metal studs for future finishing with drywall.

seems cool but only for new builds. have to feel like new builds are very costly at the moment, and backed up time wise. is that your experience?

what exacty is an excuse? you think im in my basement not putting myself out there? thats a fact because u posted it?

u seem to spend as much time as any on the internet...
