Aiken to Harvard

Awful. Just awful. Got beat by an Ivy for a player. Amaker screwing us once again.

Well, that sucks for us, but really, I can't criticize the choice. It's no reflection on our school or our program. Harvard is the best school in the country, as happens to have a very good basketball team right now, too.

Have we looked into their coach at all? He must be pretty good.

I am not a big KW supporter but who would have beaten out TA for Bryce? Izzo, Jay Wright, Coach K, Abe Saperstein, Red Klotz ?

C'mon, the kid's going to Harvard to play for a role model coach.
Set for life when he gets out regardless of what he does after college.

If he's my kid, he goes to Harvard.

Do I need to remind everyone that Harvard has been a better basketball school than us. Academics aside I could still understand. Dont throw out his basketball decision because it is also a good education decision.

Congrats to the kid. Sometimes its good (and easier to focus) to get away...
..and if you're going away - Harvard is about the best education you can find in the world!

harvard plays is a lesser conference who has member schools with strict academic achievement for admitting students to play ncaa division I athletics; also it has been well noted that amaker has lessened the bar for students to get admitted to be on his basketball teams; the princeton teams in the mid to the late 90s and cornell from a handful of years ago were better teams coming out of the ivy league in my opinion

parents won out; and I have to say speaking as a parent; it's hard to argue against the choice. Besides, if he doesn't like it there or things don't work out, you do what everyone seems to be doing anymore; transfer.

How are all the Ivy League Basketball teams and the majority of the players on those teams. Now this is not a knock on Alex Mitola, but what schools were recruiting him- then look at the #'s he put up as a freshmen at Dartmouth. He was not facing tough competition and he decided to transfer to George Washington to face better talent.

it comes down to one question

Saperstein & Klotz, a law firm specializing in college recruitment would have won out. Hey Klotz beat the Trotters once didn't he?

My kid would be Harvard bound also btw.

Not true, that's just a tired, rationalization from the programs that lost out on him.

For the last couple of weeks we've been hearing/reading that the mother wanted him to go to Harvard and he wasn't into it. Hey, who the hell knows, but whatever the case; I get it.

jay williams wanted to go to rutgers, mom made him take official to duke

Yup. He was crying in the car on the way down to Durham because he felt he was being disloyal to Kevin Bannon - this was told to me directly by his mom - and yet verballed to K before he left town.

Recruiting: Willard vs. Any Other Coach = Any Other Coach wins

Willard vs Mom and Playing Time and big recruiting class and Amaker

I am sorry we lost out on Aiken; I think he would have been a nice addition. I wish him all the best.

You can knock Amaker all you want but he is a hell of a recruiter . Aiken is now part of a 6 member incoming class at Harvard and he is the third top 150 ranked player in that class. ( all ranked between 100 and 150 ).

Klotz, a Nova grad did beat the Trotters once. He died a year or two ago I think. Saperstein ran the Trotters. Their law firm only took clients with names like Goose, Meadowlark, Curley and Yussel.
Yussel? I threw that in to make sure you were paying attention.

Red Klotz was one of the greats. I think he went to George Washington however but he was originally from Philly. The only coach ever to lose 1000 straight games and not get fired !!! Who can ever forget that Homer Simpson line that he placed a bet on the Washington Generals because they were "over due".

If you are ever in the Palestra they have a mural of the great HS players in Philly History. Klotz is right there next to Chamberlain & Gola.

Red Klotz played at Villanova.

Amaker has a very good thing going on up at Harvard. Not sure how much they pay him, but he is a very good position to be the perennial Ivy League winner, get a place at the NCAA tournament and bringing in good talent allows him and the program to be better than one and done in the dance.

Will be interesting to see if Amaker sticks around for the long haul at Harvard here. Not sure if he ranks as heir apparent to Coach K, but I'm sure he's going to see another primetime job offer at some point.

I was really upset about hearing his commitment to Harvard but I totally see that you can't beat a great education and Amaker's spin on mothers! But we have been recruiting him for such a long time and he was ready to commit to us and then the Willard factor unfortunately rears its ugly head.lol

Harvard kept calling and calling and got him to commit. That's all I have to say!

We got a commitment from powell who is much more highly ranked. Silly comment.
Thank Sha for that. With Aiken it was Amaker vs Sha; can anyone here even name one of the Harvard assistants. Willard is one of the worst recruiting head coaches at a power conference basketball school. Who else are we good with?

No one worth a ship or that we lead......Although a legit power forward or post would be ideal in case a ship opens up....There is always the transfer route in the spring.

There are now 4 legitimate pools of players to recruit from now and for a school that struggles with its recruiting it should be proactive in all four and actively follow more then just the HS/Prep school pool. As I has mentioned in the past schools are now assigning one assistant to follow the transfer pools as the grow in importance . Those pools are:
HS/Prep
Transfers
JUCO
Off-Shore
