Pete Rose, the MLB legend and all-time hits leader whose historic career was followed by a lifetime ban over a gambling controversy, has died.

Met him at that same restaurant and he was a jerk to my 10 year old son. Nonetheless, may he rest in peace.
Met him a charitable organization lunch which he was speaking back in 2018. He demanded that they put him up at the then Sands Casino instead of the hotel where he was speaking.
Having met him taking a photo 30 minutes before he spoke I didn’t think he was going to make it as he was pretty incoherent. He rallied somehow, got up and was entertaining although some of his jokes were chauvinistic cringeworthy with so many women in the room. But Philly fans give him a pass

His inclusion in the HOF, now posthumously is a tough call.
My take is if he just bet on baseball maybe there would be hope down the road. But his betting on games he managed and played in is a road too far traveled.
Baseball is understandably worried about illegal influences in the game as regards the public's perception of their gambling money being impacted. And athletes that bet either way on games they played in will not and cannot be tolerated.
Thus a player who should have been a no doubt about it 100% first year entry to the HOF IMO will never get that invite.

Too many celebrities passing away in a short period of time. Didn’t we just lose James Earl Jones and Donald Sutherland? 2024 has been a tough one when it comes to celebrities passing away. Kind of reminds me of 2016. That was another bad year for celebrities. Holding out hope Clint Eastwood is still alive and kickin’ in 2025.
I'm for a scoundrels wing of the HOF. Baseball did nothing to discourage the steroid laden behavior when the game was post strike. It was dead in the water, and the race to 60 and 70 HRs had everyone's attention. I get Rose is different but a wing of Rose, Bonds, McGwire, Clemens, Manny, Palmiero, Sosa, Canseco, (add your own- I know I missed some) would be an something. Ignoring it doesn't change that it happened.

While not crazy that he bet on baseball games, he NEVER bet against his team which is the bright line for me. All players should have to bet on their teams, ie, their salaries should be tied to winning.
He was a real ahole, no argument from me there though.
If you like baseball, you have to like how Pete played. I see Nimmo run to first after a walk and I see Pete doing it in the 60s.
I read that Whitey Ford and The Mick dubbed him Charlie Hustle after a spring training game, kind of as a joke
I can only think he must have pissed in the league off so bad that they just couldn’t get over it but that’s hard to imagine. My gut tells me that the Ohtani scandal is probably much worse and MLB is in a different place ($$$) today and wants to keep it under the rug.

Unfortunately, your analogy doesn't completely hold for Rose as he was gambling on his teams as the manager, not a player. A manager trying to win one game, can negatively impact the results of future games.
In recent years I was kind of leaning in support of Pete to HOF, but recently watched the documentary on Rose on Max. Pete came across as a sympathetic figure, but I am back to leaning more to keeping him out of HOF.
Assuming he didn’t bet against his team is dubious at best considering it took him 15 years to even admit he bet on baseball.
I don’t believe him at all.
I personally wouldn’t bet against (no pun intended) Giamatti. He was tough, but extremely strait-laced and thorough.
Shoeless Joe should be in first and then Rose if they allow it. But only in that order specifically.
Also remember Buddy Harrelson and Pete getting into a fight at second base in the 1973 playoffs.
Hosted him for a day when he came home to East Orange for a John Amos Day in the late 70’s. Enjoyed the time with him.
