I like the idea, but I don't like the arbitrary 50 person minimum. Some businesses will just stop the layoffs at 49 if possible to comply with the law. I think a sliding scale of some sorts would be better, but all in all I support this legislation.

Its well intended but it could backfire and like the article said continue to keep employers out of NJ. The venture capital/private equity folks are very nasty and could care less about jobs and this bill is targeting those practices. What will happen when a company is simply bankrupt and they can't pay severance? The people will not get any protection from this bill is what will happen.

Good points. Need to think through unintended consequences. Don’t want to discourage companies from relocating into the state.

You’re darn right I don’t like it. Lots of unintended consequences like companies not relocating to NJ or laying off employees even earlier than want to, etc.
