Another win for the criminals

Rampant shoplifting

and yet, the Target stores a couple minutes a away manage to stay open, and there are Walmart stores staying open in areas within more significant crime and theft than Portland.

Maybe it’s just way more simple than you’re making it out to be and they are closing the stores because they are poor performing stores, like they said.

Maybe their internal analysis showed that the needs of their customers would be met when they closed one of the stores, by the other store that’s stay open just outside the city which is 3 miles away? The theft can’t be occurring 3 miles down the road I guess?

Property Crimes (National vs Portland)

Theft: 2.71 / 6.96
Burglary: 13.94 / 37.74
Car Theft: 2.28 / 14.20

Maybe the town in the suburbs doesn’t have a large number of open police positions, and have lower crime statistics. 3 miles? How far is the Newark border from South Orange?

I wonder how many of these knuckleheads will be caught and prosecuted.

Maybe the mayor of Portland can team up with Governor Newsome and they can run in 2024 on homelessness, shoplifting and despair. Common sense tells us if people are living on the streets, there will be more electricity to charge our cars. Winning strategy.

Didn’t the article you posted stated that Walmart pushed back on the stance that rampant shoplifting led to the closing of the stores and it was based upon stores not meeting their numbers?

Moreover, the Portland Police aré back to cracking down on shoplifters. Although I still don’t know why they ever stopped.

Not to use common sense, but if I was a Walmart worker working in a high crime area and Walmart announces they're closing stores due to high crime, I'm probably going to consider looking for a new job before I'm forced to find a new one.

I would think Walmart would fight back just to avoid that scenario.

Yes, common sense would tell you also that a large public company is going to soft-sell the issue so as not risk being cancelled either.

The crime stats are off the charts and I read that Portland is short 300 LEO's as many have quit due to the lack of support from the mayor.

I just think in general everywhere you look and talk to people whether it's restaurant owners, landscapers, the local deli, they all say it's tough finding people who want to work nevermind finding good workers. I doubt Walmart is the exception.

Any chance robberies, burglaries, shoplifting, homelessness, and drugs had something to do with sagging sales?

"Rising crime and an inhospitable business climate have been too tough on Portland businesses, and we need to work harder and smarter as a city to keep employers and shopping options from leaving.” - Portland City Commissioner Rene Gonzalez.

On the flip side, the Mayor went to the Bagdad Bob school of public relations.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler also responded to FOX 12′s request for comment, sending this statement:

“As they indicated to their comments to media, Walmart’s decision to close the two stores was based on poor overall business performance.

Agree. I wasn't discounting your response. I think there are several reasons (that being one) why it would be dumb for the CEO to call out crime for closing the store.

Why would anyone on this board try to explain away what is happening in Portland and not acknowledge that crime is closing these stores. It is NOT racists to state crime is doing terrible things to businesses in a number of cities even if the majority of people committing the crimes are black.Just like saying 90% of black murders are black on black it is just factual.

And property crime in Portland is 3-5 times the national average, so facts don’t matter to some.

They close dozens of stores every year. This really isn’t something that’s unusual for them. Stores that don't perform well get shut down. That's what they have been doing for decades.

They could have hired 10 security guards at every single store in the US with a $70k salary each and would have still been more profitable than they were in 2021.

But go on pitching your narrative.... When was the last time any of you were even in a Walmart?

Because there are Walmart stores with more theft than these that will remain open.

And stores that suffer large thefts would underperform, because the last time I checked, you lose money on thefts. Don't you find it odd that they no longer have any Walmart's in the entire City of Portland? Is there any other major cities that don't have one Walmart? I would think it would be none or a very small number.

I go to Walmart pretty often depending on what I need. Do you look down on Walmart shoppers? Seems like you are the one ignoring facts to support your own narrative.

Wouldn't the worker look for a new job regardless because the store is closing?

Why is it dumb for the CEO to call out crime as the reason they are closing their stores? If that is the case, the CEO should come out and say it. We are leaving Portland because the police are not arresting shoplifters and the DA's office is not prosecuting them. As a company we made the decision to leave this market that allows lawlessness. I don't see why that would be bad for a company to say that.

Its pretty obvious..less controversial to produce a generic statement so you don't rile people up on social media.

I think you missed the point.

Please note this is hypothetical.....Hypotherical #1 there's a walmart in Morristown. Hypothetical #2 Morristown is high crime. Let's say I'm a worker at the Walmart in Morristown NJ and crime in Morristown is terrible. There's no news of the Morristown closing, however news comes out due to high crime in Portland, the Walmart in Portland is closing. If I was the worker in Morristown, and I hear the Portland store is closing because of crime, and I'm working for Walmart in a high crime area, I'm getting ahead of the curve and looking for a new job because Morristown is high crime.

Yeah, just some of the largest cities in the country...
New York City, LA, San Francisco, Detroit, Seattle, Boston...

I mean, thank you for just proving your entire point wrong here. Bravo. lol

All cities with the highest rents that are prohibitive for big box stores. There has never been a Walmart in NYC for instance. Walmart has NEVER been allowed to put a store in San Francisco.

And as you know, Portland had several and they have now all closed. It's kind of tough to close a store if you've never been allowed to open one in the first place. Bravo::)

They will now have three right outside the city limits... Like they do outside all other major cities.
Maybe Portland just doesn't need 5 Walmart's and 6 Targets?
Maybe Walmart realized their volume would remain sufficient with 3 in the areas?

What were the sales statistics compared to other locations?
What were the theft statistics compared to other locations?

You realize without that information, you're just making stuff up, right?

Nice deflection. They HAD stores in the city limits and they have CLOSED them all. A city that has a personal property crime rate 3-5 times the national average. They are outside those other cities that you posted because they NEVER had a store in those cities.

Or maybe the shoplifing was so great (3 - 5 times the national average), it didn't make sense to keep them open anymore and hope some of those shoppers would travel to the stores outside the city.

I provided data on property crime in the City of Portland. (Did I make those up??) You on the other hand have provided nothing except false facts about cities that NEVER had a Walmart in the city limits to begin with.

Right... and they close stores all the time. Hundreds over the last 5-6 years.
They have many stores in areas with worse crime rates than Portland and they will stay open. Why do you think that is?

Correlation =/= Causation.

Is there a city where they have closed ALL of their locations?

You already failed on your first foray of pointing to cities that NEVER had a Walmart. Want to try again?

The real answer is only the people at the top know. Is it possible the crimes in Portland are more dangeous than other parts of the country? Maybe they have data that says so. Maybe they have data that says nobody buys from walmart because they steal at target. All I can say is there's plenty of reason to walk back the statement on crime didn't close us down. Whether that is the reason, I don't know and I don't think anyone on piratecrew does either, but it definitely is a possibility.

You're really exaggerating the impact here.
Pretty sure you have 3 Walmart locations within a drivable distance? I also have three Walmart locations within a drivable distance.

The people in Portland will now also have three Walmart locations within a drivable distance.

Presenting facts is exaggerating? lol

Walmart's that were already there outside the city limits. Now the shoppers have to travel further.

They already had them but further from the stores that they shopped.
