As I was watching the news this morning I noticed the "Asylum Seekers" in NY are not happy with the free food, housing, medical care, etc they are receiving in the USA. They were protesting and chanting in Spanish by the way, that they are not being given proper care. They were refusing to go on busses to be housed in a different facility.

Perhaps they should do the following:
  • Be grateful of the opportunities they are receiving. Some of which our own citizens do not get from our government.
  • Learn English
  • If they don't like all the freebees they are receiving, go back to their country as many of them call it.
It seems that generations ago people used to come to America to become Americans. Now, they come here and try to be as Un-American as they can.

Back to that perception problem you touched on earlier. Tens of thousands of asylum seekers and a couple dozen protesting make them all look bad.

Agree with the overall sentiment though. They should be grateful for the opportunity and make efforts to assimilate as much as possible. Though, being ungrateful and protesting does seem to be part of our culture lately so maybe they are onto something ;)

I'm convinced that outside groups (probably Soros-funded) coach these people on what to say to the media to continue fanning the flames of division. I'm sure they also help them with organization.

Does Kathy Hokul even know that there are asylum seekers in her state? Or is she too busy still denying unvaccinated healthcare workers to staff their hospitals.

She is totally in over her head, but that's what NY voters wanted.

I watched Season 1 of "Mo" on Netflix.

Dramedy about a Palestinian family waiting 22 years for Asylum.

Mo's character is hilarious.

Just started a few days ago actually. Through 3 episodes so far but it's been pretty good.

LOL, love the learn English demand. Why is speaking Spanish offensive? The first Eurpoean language spoken in this country was Spanish. The first permanent European settlement was when Spain settled St Augustine in Florida 70 years before Jamestown. Many of our cities and and states are Spanish names especially in the south and west. Like it or not, the Spanish language is intricately interwoven in this country. Most of the country was explored and founded not by England but by Spain. Spain as well as France were big supporters of the American Revolution. One of the great Generals in the Revolutionary War was Spanish and Galveston Texas was named after him. Spanish therefore is pretty American.

We as Americans should all be bilingual.

I don’t recall any demands.

When my family came here, legally by the way. None of them illegally crossed any borders. They all made it a priority to learn English. They actually started learning English prior to immigrating.

I do agree that everyone should learn at least one other language.

Oh! I didn’t know the land that stretches from Florida to California wasn’t the United States. The Flag of Los Angeles carries the coat of arms of Castile and Leon Spain on it. If you don’t think Spanish is interwoven into the history and fabric of this country from its origins, you do not know US history.

As far as your analogy, can you tell me what American influence exists in The origins of the country Netherlands? Zero!

No one has said that Spanish was not part of US History. No one said that the immigrants should forget Spanish. The US does not have an official language but the unofficial language and the langue that is most spoken, taught in schools, road signs etc is English. It would be nice if the people who are enjoying benefits they never received in their native country at least made an effort to learn our unofficial language.

On top of it now, the asylum seekers in NY are not only protesting, they are refusing to leave their free hotels.

Exactly...when you go into someone's home, how about being respectful and accepting their language? It doesn't matter if there is a Spanish influence...there's influence of many countries here in the U.S., but should we have street signs in German in Lancaster, PA; street signs in some areas in Brooklyn in Italian? Of course not...silly analogy in the first place.

You want people who arrived in this country to speak English when they have been here for a month. Doesn't seem quite reasonable to me, It seemed from your post that you were somehow annoyed that they protested in Spanish. As many people say in this country, speak English. Spanish was spoken here first. Second, these are asylum seekers. These are people that this country historically has welcomed because they are being punished for their political beliefs in their native country which have typically been granted to those from communist nations.

Now, I get it that they should be grateful for what they are being given in this country and the people interviews that I saw, actually said they were grateful.

Not the same. Those nations had nothing to so with the founding of this nation. Those countries had nothing to do with settling this nation. I guess you should be looking for other words for Florida, Colorado, Los Angeles California, Texas because these are all Spanish names.

you realize Spain was an ENEMY of the united states at the time of its founding???

btw sweden and finland settled some of the northeast before any british, spanish, etc. where log cabins came from. are you doing your part and eating ikea meatballs for thanksgiving? why arent we teaching algonquin?

stuuuupid argument

I believe most of these people are either arriving illegally by crossing our porous border or staying beyond the amount of time that was originally on their visas. They are now here for a better or easier life. Instead of immigrating the legal way, they are hiding behind the asylum seeker tag. I don't believe in rewarding people for breaking our laws and entering our country illegally.

For those that are actually seeking asylum the right way and for the right reasons, I support them.

I am in favor of legal immigration. Unfortunately, there are a lot of people coming in illegally. They are not paying taxes and are sending money back to "their country". Hospitals are overrun with illegals showing up for minor issues - long term illnesses. They know they cannot be turned away. They get their treatment and have no intentions of paying their bills. I have seen this firsthand. A friend of mine married a legal immigrant. She has a ton of relatives that came here illegally. They laugh and mock my friend for paying taxes and paying for health insurance. They tell him about what they refer to as the hospital scam. Sore throat, go to the hospital. Runny nose, go to the hospital.

Our jails on the border states are overcrowded by illegal immigrants. Our schools there are the same.

You have no clue about history. Spain was an Ally of the United States during the Revolutionary War. It helped greatly with supplies and military generals and troops. Moreover, Spain settled in Florida in 1565. I have no idea why the hell you are talking about Finland and Sweden. Spanish has always been spoken in this country and it should offend no one that Spanish is spoken since it is part of the fabric of this country since its founding.

Spain helped us because they were aligned with France and fighting the British. The enemy of my enemy is my friend.

France was our true ally. Lafayette was the man! Vive La France! Marchons!

BTW, anyone know if they were serving croissants to the migrants?

You keep mentioning St Augustine. Is that the only time you've been away from home?

I've been there a few times. Ho-hum at best.

The Columbian is a good restaurant albeit I prefer the original location in Tampa.

Spain gave up Florida so they could keep Cuba. We wish them good fortune.

The first migration of Americans (I.e American Indians) mostly likely came from Asia.

So I say we go back to speaking Chinese and pay reparations to native Americans. Perhaps we could negotiate having our football team names back when we make the deal.

Maybe we should house native Americans the NYC hotels. I bet they would be appreciative. Then again, they have some kick ass casinos.

Oh boy you are so witty today. I mention St Augustine because it is the first settlement of the Spanish. But perhaps you should go visit other states where the Spaniards discovered and settled. This might help you.

One aspect of the original post is about how the asylum speakers should speak English when in this country. Well, my reply that Spanish is the first European language spoken here and first people who set up permanent settlements and the first people who discovered and most of what the US is today. Second, it's ridiculous to want people who just arrived in this country to speak English. Third, no one should be offended by people speaking Spanish in this country because Spanish is part of this country from the beginning. I wonder how many of you commenting on this speak another language?

Now, what was Spain's true motivation to help us in the Revolutionary War is irrelevant. They helped the US big time in the Revolutionary War.

Oh boy you are so witty today

And you are your usual snarky, annoying, arrogant self. You are incapable of making a point without being an a__hole.

You live you your own alternate universe of logic.

The gestalt of the OP was that the migrants are bad house guests which any reasonable person can see.

You pick one detail and go off on a silly rant.

BTW, I'll match my travels and knowledge of history anytime.

Go Pirates!

LOL. Someone's has their panties in bunch. Didn't know I must stick to your rules about replying to posts.

This is very funny. "BTW, I'll match my travels and knowledge of history anytime." No, you are not arrogant at all.

I go commando.

Regarding posting, you needn't stick to anyone's rules which by the way I don't have. Just keep going with your snarky nasty style. When people don't agree with you, call them stupid, unreasonable, ridiculous, and whatever other names you care to call them.

And yes I'm not being civil here because when my toes get stepped on I step back twice as hard.

If you want to have intelligent discourse, I'd welcome it.

Regarding speaking Spanish in America, there is already a pretty healthy recognition of the Spanish language. I can't recall anytime when I have phoned a call center and given the option of press 1 for Arabic.

I always thought it was a nice touch when Jeb Bush would give his press conferences in both languages himself. Granted he was married to a Hispanic and maybe he had a leg up on the language, but I still think it was a nice gesture to recognize that much of his State spoke Spanish

You need to re-read this thread. Let’s see, I responded to SHUSA’s posts who posted clearly erroneous things like 1) Spain was only on the continent and not on US lands 2) Spain was an enemy of the US during the revolutionary war saying he had no clue.

With regard to your posts, I responded to your post of the following: “you keep mentioning St Augustine. Is that the only time you’ve been away from home? Well, to that I said aren’t you witty today.

That comment sent you into a tizzy which you then made personal attacks on me and used profanity.

So I wasn’t being nasty. But you were. But no worries, I have thick skin and your comments I just brush off like it was nothing.

I have ShuUSA on ignore and so I don't read his posts.

I think your assessment of his posts justifies my stance on that one.

You did seem to obsess about St Augustine and like I said I wasn't all that impressed with it

So how about coming back to the OP.

Do you think it's justified that the migrants are complaining that they will be moved to the facility at the Brooklyn Cruise terminal?

If I understand it correctly, they were moving single men out so they can make room for families in the hotel. The single men were annoyed that they would have to now move to a facility where there was less privacy etc.

The mayor made his grandstanding appearance showing how they could play ping pong and such.

A__hole = Profanity ??

Yeah you really have a very thick skin. Lol.
yes, it is profanity. I didn't say I was offended by it nor care. But yes it is indeed profanity.

I already commented about it to a reply to SHUMatt. I said this.

"Now, I get it that they should be grateful for what they are being given in this country and the people interviews that I saw, actually said they were grateful."

The person I head interviewed wanted to be closer to places where they worked in Manhattan instead of Staten Island. I can understand their desire. But of all the asylum seekers there, it was only 12 protesting. It is much ado about nothing. If they became violent and bothered people, then I would have a huge issue with it.

Moreover, it seems like it was Americans (advocates) that actually made this more than what it was. https://nypost.com/2023/01/30/protesting-migrants-still-wont-budge-outside-nyc-hotel/

Exactly. It's weird how people here seem to get that the media fans the flames and makes stories seem much worse on some issues… but then they don't connect those same dots when they want to agree with what the media is selling. This really wasn’t much of an issue.

This really wasn’t much of an issue.

Until Cern went on his rant about Spanish, the revolutionary war, and St. Augustine! LOL

Funny how a lawyer took issue with a posting about the immigration law to require English.
