PIRATES FOILED ON ANOTHER LATE HOME RUN IN GAME ONE

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – The Seton Hall baseball team rallied late from a 3-0 deficit, but a ninth inning Creighton home run proved to be the difference in the Pirates' 4-3 loss in game one of Saturday's doubleheader.

With the Pirates trailing 3-0, Seton Hall's offense finally broke through in the bottom of the seventh inning. With one out, Joe Poduslenko (Glen Mills, Pa.) doubled down the left field line. Sophomore Chris Villa (Staten Island, N.Y.) followed with a towering opposite-field home run, the first of his career, to cut the deficit to 3-2.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, The Hall drew even. Freshman Tyler Shedler-McAvoy (Allendale, N.J.) reached on an infield single to lead off. Rob Dadona (Staten Island, N.Y.) advanced him to second on a well-executed sacrifice bunt. Freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.J.) followed with an RBI single through the left side to tie the game at three.

Turning Point:
With one out in the top of the ninth inning, Creighton's Isaac Collins hit a solo home run over the right field fence off Pirate reliever Ryan Testani (Shelton, Conn.) to give the Bluejays a 4-3 advantage.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Seton Hall starter Cullen Dana (Montgomery, N.Y.) allowed two runs over four innings in a no decision.
  • Poduslenko reached base twice with a double, a walk and a stolen base.
  • Junior Matt Leon (Bethlehem, Pa.) allowed one unearned run over three hitless innings.

PRENDERGAST TOSSES BIRTHDAY SHUTOUT OF CREIGHTON

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Senior Zach Prendergast (Horsham, Pa.) tossed his first career complete-game shutout as the Seton Hall baseball team defeated Creighton, 1-0, in game two of Saturday's doubleheader.

Prendergast was brilliant scattering seven hits, striking out seven and walking only one batter in 106 pitches to improve to 6-2 on the season. The career-best performance taking place on Seton Hall's Senior Day, which also happened to be Prendergast's 22nd birthday.

The Pirates generated all of the offense Prendergast needed in the bottom of the third inning. Senior Jackson Martin (Collegeville, Pa.) doubled down the right field line to lead off. With one out, junior Ryan Ramiz (Freehold, N.J.) singled up the middle to plate Martin with the game's lone run.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Both senior Mikael-Ali Mogues (New York, N.Y.) and freshman Matt Toke (Three Bridges, N.Y.) reached base twice with a single and a walk.
  • Both Seton Hall and Creighton left seven men on base.
News & Notes:
  • Prendergast's start today was the 37th of his career, which moves him into sole possession of fifth place on the Seton Hall career starts list.
  • With today's doubleheader, Seton Hall's team earned run average has lowered to 3.54, a season-best.

What a shame this team just cannot put wood to the ball. That puts tremendous pressure on the pitchers and D.
