PREVIEW

Seton Hall returned to action last weekend as its series, originally scheduled to be played in Charlottesville, Virginia was relocated to Myrtle Beach due to wintery conditions. Seton Hall played Cornell on Friday and the Pirates no-hit the Big Red for 8.1 innings before surrendering a perfectly-placed infield hit in the ninth inning. Zach Prendergast, making his first career start, threw seven hitless innings to earn the victory. He was subsequently named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week on Monday. On Saturday, the Pirates dropped a pair of games, 4-1 to #1 Virginia, and 3-1 to Hartford. Although the team pitched relatively well, the Pirates offense mustered just five runs for the series and posted just a .172 batting average.

Seton Hall's home-opener with Manhattan scheduled for Wednesday was postponed. The Pirates will not travel to Tampa for three games with former BIG EAST member USF. The Hall is just 7-11 all-time against the Bulls, but has won the last four.

THINGS TO KNOW

PIRATES FALL SHORT

Seton Hall dropped both ends of a double-header on Saturday, falling to #1 Virginia, 4-1, in the opener and Harford, 3-1, in the nightcap. The Pirates received solid pitching in both, but couldn't muster the timely offense.

NEAR NO-NO

The Pirates were two outs from tossing a combined no-hitter vs. Cornell on Friday, but surrendered an infield hit with one out in the ninth inning. Sophomore Zach Prendergast pitched seven innings of no-hit baseball, before giving way to Sam Burum who retired all four of his batters. The infield hit came off of Anthony Elia, who quickly dispatched the next two hitters to preserve the one-hit shutout.

FIRST WIN

Seton Hall earned its first victory of the season with a 3-0 shutout of Cornell on Friday. Zach Prendergast picked up the victory in his first start of the season. Prendergast didn't surrender a hit, walked two and struck out six.

PRENDY HONORED

Sophomore Zach Prendergast) was named one of Collegiate Baseball's National Players of the Week on Monday. He was also named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.

MYRTLE MADNESS

Due to cold and snowy conditions in the Northeast, several teams relocated their series to The Ripken Experience complex in Myrtle Beach. The complex holds nine synthetic turf fields. In addition to Seton Hall, among those playing at the neutral site over the weekend included, Virginia, Hartford, Cornell, Rutgers, Old Dominion, Virginia Tech, Toledo, Western Carolina, Pittsburgh and VCU among others.

STRONG IN RELIEF

When Luke Cahill left due to injury in the second inning of Friday's game at UNC, Sam Burum entered and pitched the remainder of the game. He pitched 6.2 innings and gave up only three earned runs. Burum's performance was made even more important considering the Pirates had a double-header the following day.

PIRATES PICKED THIRD

Seton Hall has been predicted to finish third in the seven-team BIG EAST by the conference's coaches in the preseason poll. St. John's was picked to win the conference and received three first place votes. Creighton was picked second and received two first place votes, while the Pirates also received two first place votes.

FOUR NAMED PRESEASON ALL-BIG EAST

Seniors Sal Annunziata and D.J. Ruhlman, as well as juniors Luke Cahill and Derek Jenkins, were named to the Preseason All-BIG EAST Team. Ruhlman was a unanimous selection. All four were All-BIG EAST performers in 2014.

CAHILL PRESEASON PITCHER OF THE YEAR

Junior Luke Cahill was named BIG EAST Preseason Co-Pitcher of the Year. He's the second Seton Hall pitcher to earn the distinction in the last three years (John Prosinski - 2012). Cahill went 10-2 with a 2.65 ERA, the fifth-best mark in the BIG EAST, last year for the Pirates.

Hopefully, they'll get back on track in Florida this weekend. This should be their first real chance to play in some nicer weather. They're off to a rough start and need a good weekend.. I hope to see some of the action this weekend and can get a better overview on this year's squad. They'll have to overcome not having Prevost as the lead on the pitching staff.

Baseball Team lose Game #1 of series 1-0 to USF. Pirates are really struggling at the plate early in the season. Pitching
is getting better, but no offense to date. 12 K's recorded by USF pitching. They need a breakout game to turn their early season record around.
