PREVIEW
Seton Hall moved over .500 for the first time this season with a sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson last weekend at Owen T. Carroll Field. The Pirates have now won five straight games and 11 of their last 13 after starting the season with a record of 1-8. On Friday, FDU issued 11 walks as the Pirates routed the Knights, 9-2, behind a strong outing by starter Zach Prendergast. The right-hander went six innings and gave up just two runs to improve to 3-2. Derek Jenkins, Kyle Grimm and Tyler Boyd all had two hits apiece for The Hall. Seton Hall swept Sunday's double-header thanks to strong pitching. In the opener, Shane McCarthy threw his second straight complete-game shutout to blank the Knights, 4-0. McCarthy has now not issued a run in his last 23 innings pitched. In the second game, Seton Hall used seven pitchers to hold FDU to just one run in a 2-1 victory. Seton Hall trailed 1-0, until it scored single runs in the bottom of the seventh and the bottom of the eighth. Zach Schellenger pitched well through the first four innings, but Sam Burum ended up with the victory. Luke Cahill picked up his first career save. For his efforts last week, Derek Jenkins was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll.
LANCING THE KNIGHTS
Last weekend, Seton Hall completed a three-game sweep of Fairleigh Dickinson. The Pirates routed the Knights, 9-2 on Friday, and swept them in a double-header on Sunday. In the first game, The Hall won, 4-0, in the second game, they edged FDU, 2-1.
WINNING STREAK
Seton Hall enters BIG EAST play having won five straight games. Since starting the season with a 1-8 record, the Pirates have won 11 of their last 13 games.
JENKINS HONOR ROLL
Junior Derek Jenkins was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Monday. The speedster batted .400 in five Seton Hall victories last week. He also scored six runs and stole five bases.
STRONG PITCHING
Seton Hall pitchers issued just two earned runs over the three-game series vs. Fairleigh Dickinson last weekend.
FANTASTIC FALCONI
Senior Alex Falconi enters this weekend with a .297 batting average, which is good for third on the team. With more than half of the season still to play, he has already eclipsed his previous single-season high with 19 hits. His bat has made him a regular in the lineup whether behind the plate or at designated hitter.
MID-WEEK WINS
Seton Hall improved to a perfect 5-0 in mid-week games with victories over Princeton and Lafayette this week. The Pirates edged the Tigers on March 24 by scoring three runs in the bottom of the ninth to win, 6-5. On March 25, The Hall defeated Lafayette, 8-3.
MARVELOUS MCCARTHY
Freshman Shane McCarthy pitched another gem on Sunday vs. FDU. Albeit a Sunday double-header shortened game (7 innings), he tossed his second consecutive complete game shutout. This time, McCarthy allowed only ONE HIT and improved to 3-1 this season, while lowering his BIG EAST-best ERA to 0.57. He has not allowed an earned run in his last 23 innings.
CLEPTOMANIACS
Seton Hall is again leading the BIG EAST in steals by a wide margin. As a team, the Pirates 46 steals lead the conference. Derek Jenkins (12), D.J. Ruhlman (8) and Zack Weigel (8) are first, third and third in the BIG EAST among individuals.
COMEBACK KIDS
On Tuesday vs. Princeton, Sal Annunziata hit a solo home run to give The Hall a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth. But the Tigers scored three runs in the top of the ninth to take a 5-3 advantage. With two outs and the bases empty, the Pirates mounted a comeback and won the game on an RBI single by Tyler Boyd, 6-5. It's the first time Seton Hall has trailed in the ninth inning and won since rallying against Notre Dame on April 5, 2012.
