SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. -- The 2015-16 Seton Hall women's basketball team will take to historic Walsh Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon for its final tune-up prior to the regular season. The Pirates will host Division-II Philadelphia University in an exhibition contest at Walsh, set to tip off at 2 p.m.

The Hall is coming off arguably its most successful season in program history a year ago, as reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Anthony Bozzella led the Pirates to a program-record 28 victories, a BIG EAST regular season title and their first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1995. The Pirates finished the 2014-15 season with a 28-6 overall, a 15-3 mark in BIG EAST play and a sterling 17-1 record at Walsh Gymnasium. The Hall concluded the regular season at No. 24 in the national polls.

In Bozzella's two years at The Hall, the Pirate have compiled a 48-20 record and made back-to-back postseason appearances. In his third year the Pirates will look to Preseason All-BIG EAST pick Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) to lead the scoring load. The Hall's all-time (194) and single-season (99) record holder for 3-pointers, Richardson-Smith enters her senior season ranked ninth on The Hall's all-time scoring list with 1,321 career points. The forward was an All-BIG EAST second team pick last season after averaging 17.8 points and 6.8 rebounds per contest.

In support of Richardson-Smith, senior Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) is the second-leading returning scorer and rebounder after averaging 7.0 points and 5.8 rebounds per game over 21 contests off the bench. Jones, who notched eight double-digit scoring games and two double-doubles, played a season-high 28 minutes and finished with 17 points and seven rebounds in The Hall's NCAA Tournament game vs. Rutgers. She also had a 20-point, 13-rebound effort vs. Creighton on Feb. 8.

A pair of impact transfers will anchor the backcourt following the departure of All-America Honorable mentions Ka-Deidre Simmons and Daisha Simmons. Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) sat out 2014-15 after transferring from Iona College, where she was an All-MAAC performer as a junior and an All-Rookie selection under Bozzella as a freshman. Also joining the fray is graduate transfer Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) a 2011 WBCA High School All-American who helped Florida State to an Elite Eight berth a season ago.

The center position figures to be filled by Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jordan Molyneaux (Denver, Colo.) while Tara Inman (Holmdel, N.J.), Claire Lundberg (Andover, Minn.), and Jordan Mosley (Orlando, Fla.) add veteran experience at the guard position and on the wing. Incoming freshman including Taylor Byrne (Massapequa, N.Y.), Kaity Healy (Colts Neck, N.J.), Martha Kuderer (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.) will all have a chance to make an immediate impact as well.

Philadelphia went 22-9 in 2014-15, including a 14-5 record in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference (CACC). The Rams were tabbed to finish second in the CACC Southern Division in this year's Preseason Coaches Poll. Bria Young is Philadelphia's top returning scorer after averaging 11.2 points per game a year ago. Tori Arnao also returns after posting 8.7 points and 9.9 rebounds per contest last season.

Following the exhibition contest, Seton Hall opens the 2015-16 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 with an 11 a.m. start against Bryant. The Pirates follow that contest with home match-ups against 2015 NCAA Tournament teams Rutgers and Princeton.

Season tickets for women's basketball cost only $45 and provide access to the best seats in historic Walsh Gymnasium. To purchase, call the Athletic Ticket Office at 973-275-4255.

Pat, instead of sitting in our normal seats, we sat behind the bench with our true blue gang.

Shakena Richardson and Aleesha Powell will run this team, they need time to know exactly where the other will be. Tiffany Jones grew even taller, she will be a force. TRS is all BE. Taylor Byrne already plays like a soph or young junior, she will be very important. Gordon got much thinner but she made a ton of mistakes, so that was not good. Molyneaux finally played in a game, she has a ton of rust, I hope she gets hungry for the ball.

I think this team can be a very strong team in the BE, not exactly the same as last year, but lots of good strengths. TT Smith will be strong as the future PG leader.

Got to talk with four of the coaches, it was a very happy afternoon.

TBP- good roundup. Thought this was Tiffany Jones best game as a Pirate. Aleesha Powell is very quick and Keena Richardson very steady. Thought 2 freshmen stood out as they played like upperclassmen...Taylor Byrne and TT Smith. Things are looking good for the WBB team.

We saw everyone except Egan (injury) Bozzella (not sure) Jackson (red shirt). I will give a more complete view after the first game. I am hoping that some of the rust in some cases will fall away.

Another thing to note, for a WWB scrimmage, it was well attended.

I love this team.

I missed the exhibition. I'll be at the Rutgers and Princeton games +2.

I really think Jones should stay inside. She a very good rebounder, and she is very good at finishing inside the paint. Of course, if she has developed a better and stronger inside-outside game it will make the opponent work harder.

I was also happy to read that Jones was 3-3 at the free throw line. That's a great start after shooting 47 percent last season.

I see in the box score that Gordon had eight rebounds in only 21 minutes. If she can give the Pirates great defense and great rebounding at both ends, any scoring will be bonus.

TRS at 2-9 from 3 is not good, although it's just an exhibition. Towards the end of last season I thought she went away from her inside-outside game and shot too much. Her shot was off. She needs to be more unpredictable. I'm confident she will step up.

I have one question: Did the team look like it had energy from the first second? were they on fire? I ask because my one complaint about last season was that when the team walked on the court, they lumbered out of the locker room as if they just ran the NYC Marathon. The warmups looked like 15 random players with each doing something different. My old school sports self would never allow that.

Final Stats

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Tiffany Jones (New York, N.Y.) led all players with 16 points to pace the Seton Hall women's basketball team to a 71-47 victory over Philadelphia in an exhibition contest on Saturday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium. The Pirates held the Rams to 28.1 percent shooting from the floor in the victory, including a 22.2 percent mark in the second half.

Jones also grabbed a team-high eight rebounds for The Hall, which led by as many as 25 in the third quarter and never trailed in the contest. Tabatha Richardson-Smith (Bay City, Texas) added 14 for The Hall, while Aleesha Powell (Philadelphia, Pa.) and Shakena Richardson (Neptune, N.J.) had identical nine-point, five-assist, four-rebound lines.

The Pirates led by seven after a quarter, and opened up a 42-29 lead at the break. The defense ratcheted up in the second half, stifling Philadelphia to only nine points in both the third and fourth quarters. Thirteen total players saw action for Seton Hall and 11 recorded at least one point.

The Pirates shot 42.2 percent from the floor and won the rebound battle by a 44-35 margin. Rachel Day led Philadelphia with 12 points and Tori Arnao paced the Rams with 13 rebounds. The contest marked the third-straight season The Hall and Philadelphia have squared off in an exhibition contest, with the Pirates going to 3-0 in the series.

Head Coach Anthony Bozzella on the result

"I thought Tiffany Jones really took over this game, I was very impressed by her. I also thought we really showed improvements on the defensive end."

Turning Point

After the Rams pulled within four at the 4:28 mark of the second quarter, The Hall ripped off a 13-0 run in a shade under four minutes to take a 40-23 lead. Jordan Mosley (Orlando, Fla.) scored six points off the bench during the run and Richardson-Smith added four.

Inside The Numbers

The Pirates turned the ball over only 12 times while forcing 17 turnovers for the Rams

The Hall held the Rams to 14.3 percent shooting (2-for-14) in the third quarter and 22.2 percent (6-for-27) overall in the second half

Seton Hall held a 40-12 advantage in points in the and a 13-0 edge in fast break points

The Pirate bench out-scored the Rams 22-6, led by a combined 15 from Mosley, Taylor Byrne (Massapequa, N.Y.) and LaTecia Smith (Gardenia, Calif.)

News and Notes

The Hall improves to 3-0 in exhibition contests under third-year head coach Anthony Bozzella

The exhibition contest marked the Seton Hall debut for transfers Powell and Richardson as well as freshmen Byrne, Kaity Healy (Colts Neck, N.J.), Martha Kuderer (Eden Prairie, Minn.), Jordan Molyneaux (Denver, Colo.) and Smith.

Seven players grabbed at least four rebounds for The Hall, led by eight each from Lubirdia Gordon (Mount Vernon, N.Y.) and Jones

Up Next

The Hall opens the 2015-16 regular season on Friday, Nov. 13 against Bryant at Walsh Gym. Tip-off is set for 11 a.m. and the contest can be seen on the Pirate Sports Network and heard on WSOU, 89.5 FM.

400,

TRS was off today. She gets a little bit streaky sometimes, has been true in the past. I have no doubt she steps it up.

Gordon got rebounds but frequently made a bad outlet pass to negate the rebound. In terms of rebounding right now, the fighters are Jones and Byrne. Gordon is slimmer but most of the time still waits for the ball. Molyneaux is basically starting over from scratch. She can leap but was very tentative yesterday. It is critical that she develops.

By the way, we saw our best buddy Alex Maseko after the game. What a magnificent young woman.

I want also reemphasize the importance of Powell, Richardson and young Smith, especially Smith upon whom much will depend.

Off the bench?

Mosley: I think will play a role as the veteran guard who plays solid all around. You know what you're getting from her whenever she enters the game.

Smith: Sparkplug guard who looks like she can run a team already.

Byrne: Def a 4 even 5 for how Bozzella plays. She can do a bit of everything. Pass, shoot to 3pt range, rebound, play TOUGH down low.

Lundberg: Just looks like a player. Bozzella will allow her to shoot.

I think they will be our main 4 off the bench wit Molyneaux getting minutes. She looked decent on D and can guard out on the perimeter too. Mobile big.

I can also see Smith (PG), Byrne (PF) and Molyneaux (C) projecting into starters for next years team.

Starters? Jones, Gordon, Tab, Powell & Richardson.

Richardson and Powell seem like DiDi & Daisha light.

Both play tough D, both are very fast, both can handle and pass. Two PGs on the court. Both seem like they can shoot from 3 a bit. And both - especially Richardson can get into the lane and make GREAT passes.

Tab needs to be Tab most nights this year. She can't have too many off night. We don't have the Simmons girls with the ability to score 20 a piece any night this year. Tab needs to score 15-18 or more every night. Efficiently.

T Jones may be our X Factor this year. Rebounder, inside scorer, showed great range, looked good from the line. She cannot foul this year like last year. We need her for 10+ ppg this year.

Gordon needs to get more consistent with put backs and lay ins. A lot of points left on the floor by her.

Btw... TBP... Our tickets are Sec 15, Row D seats 1&2.

I sat there yesterday. I love the view from that level.

Enjoying our review and discussion very much Pat - it's such a pleasure to root for this team.

Buzzershot and I were discussing Mosley - she has tremendous potential - she's reliable - but I what I'm looking for is more grit and sparkplug factor. We think she's very much aware of it and wants to make a big step up this year.

Smith - she will be very important - it's fantastic that she will learn so much from Richardson and Powell.

Byrne - I think Byrne has the chance to be as tough down low as the similar Forwards on Nova, St John's and DePaul were last year. She will anchor it down low and is already playing at Sophomore level.

Lundberg - was thrilled she finally nailed a three in her minutes - but she keeps missing her defensive assignments. I'm rooting for her big time, but I wish there was some moment when she goes cross-eyed angry (in a nice way) and gets really tough and sees how much of a difference it could make.

You are missing Inman - Tara is reliable and getting stronger and better - how about that Charge she took in the second quarter? It was an awesome stop. She also deflects the ball even for her small size. She's getting minutes - she is one of those players who is all in and has the respect of her team mates. It's sad that Egan is injured again - she was beginning to fly defensively last year, so it hurts that she's out.

Kuderer and Healy won't see minutes (maybe last minute garbage time), but I was pleased to see them getting in at all.

Gordon - goodness - I didn't have to read the stat sheet to see that she must have been 0 for 10 on shots, not to mention missing most of her foul shots. This was really surprising and a cause of concern during the game. We'll need at least half of those put backs to be strongly competitive. I know she'll be a starter, but Byrne may overtake her, and while that would be good for Byrne, it would be bad for the depth of the team. Need Gordon to step way way up - Byrne already will - and am praying that Molyneaux steps way up. I remember seeing her in a scrimmage before she was redshirted, and she can leap and block - but I saw none of that yesterday.

Richardson - a serious pleasure - she intuits the open lane, puts her head down and drives like a race car to the rim. She digs and digs as well. Love her effort - she's more similar to DiDi than Daisha, whereas Powell is more similar to Daisha than DiDid. While Smith is learning all the ropes, she'll learn a ton from Richardson.

Powell - she's sneaky fast and heads up - very similar to Daisha - good hands on steals as well. We're lucky to have her too.

With you on how good these two are.

TRS - she's the straw that stirs the drink - she will have to be consistent to help bear the load, but she is all BE for sure.

Jones - she's even taller than last year - seems to have an even better view of the court and the game situation - she is a tough scrapper for everything. She just looks and feels like she has reached the moment of maturity needed. I would put the X factor on Gordon, not Jones because I think Jones will be a consistent contributor, my worry is about Gordon right now.

We're mainly very close in what we're seeing.

For completeness, did not mention Jackson but she will be crucial next year with TT Smith, and Bozzella, sure hope she gets in, it would be a treat.

--Great info and analysis from you guys. I'm looking forward to watching this team.

--The fact that you have so many capable guards coming off the bench is a significant advantage.

--It's hard to judge from one game, but how did the four-quarter system impact the game and the pace?

--Given the deep roster, it also sounds as if one or two players are prime candidates for a red shirt year. (Yes, I know about the rule and it purpose. Yet coaches all over the place use it to manage the roster.)

--I noticed in the video that Sam Bozzella was not in uniform. She's on the roster. What happened? Injury?

Finally, I read in the bios that JaQuan Jackson's father, Willie, is an alumnus. It's always nice to see second and third generations of Pirates.

What's your opinions on Molyneaux??

I agree Inman is getting better on D. And I was impressed with that part of her game. Just doesn't seem to have it yet on Offense.

I just think Lundberg projects higher than Inman. Hopefully one of them puts it together this year on both sides of the ball.

And yes too bad for Egan.

Really not trying to pick on a player here - just an observation.

The stat sheet for Gordon shows her as 0-4 - honestly that seems like a total gift. She missed three put backs (original miss, rebound, miss, rebound, miss) in just one opportunity!

Perhaps according to scoring rules 0-1 is for the entire opportunity, without regard to the individual shot actions during the opportunity? I guess someone more knowledgeable than me will explain.

Again - this observation is about scoring, not about a player.

400 - the new rules for game flow are surprisingly fantastic! Very few timeouts taken coupled with fewer media timeouts. We felt like the game was back in the hands of the players just having to play with each and against the other team.

I say big thumbs up on the changes.

400 --

I really think we have for guards that can start on many teams in the NCAA with Powell, Richardson, Mosley & Smith... Not to mention Jackson was paying attention in every hurdle and looks hungry to play NOW.

Redshirts? IDK. Maybe one of the wings buried on the roster.

The 4 quarter system I think will be good for us.... With the young players and new players and few "head in the clouds" players we have on our team. We need that break after 10 minutes. It'll help keep our focus more often than not I believe.

Gordon looks to have lost a lot of weight from last season. Could that be part of her problems, just adjusting/learning what she can do this season as opposed to last season? Just a thought. Hopefully she will get things to click.

My take on Molyneaux is that she is one of those "gentle giant" sorts - kind and decent to a fault - I'm hoping she gets hungry for what her game could be - tons of upside for her in my book but she's so polite and kind, I don't know.... We'll see!

My take on Lundberg is that she is also a "gentle giant" sort - not a dive in and mix it up sort. She frequently is stationed as a 3P decoy, but either misses or defers - so she does not get smothered because she is not a threat. Now - if she converts her thinking into "veins of ice" and starts nailing threes from downtown, that would change things in terms of opening up TRS on the other wing. Wowza.

Inman, however, claws and scratches and digs and I think this is why we'll keep seeing her come on the bench at critical moments to get major stops. She is the lunch pail team mate you have to have to help win the game.

This could very well be what's in play. She did lose a ton of weight. If this is the factor and she compensates, it will be huge for the team.

Molyneaux is important because the Pirates were out-rebounded last season. In Big East games the statistical difference was wider.

Bigs and rebounding are what separate the top 15 from everybody else.

The top teams also hit their free throws. The Pirates had a lower FT percentage than their opponents.

In the NCAA game against Rutgers, for example, the Pirates were out-rebounded 45-33. They hit 12-23 (52 percent) on free throws, includes about 3-4 front ends. That's abysmal free throw shooting.

That was a one point game with five minutes to go. Those missed free throws were killers. (Not to mention the outrageous and completely unjustified T called against Jones which stopped their momentum.)

There are not enough of us yet seriously studying the WBB team, but it is so thrilling to be discussing how each plays and contributes and how this team is put together, coached, led, and where it's going. What a fantastic bit of fresh air.

Anyone who is jaded by the commercialism of sports should switch over to root and follow our WBB team closely. It's just the pure game with wonderful young people playing their hearts out. What a treat. I care about this team more than any other team on the planet.

Did anyone see Lauren getting into our starting guards faces yesterday during a Timeout with 4:30 left in the game? We were up 16 or 17 and Lauren was yelling; "you think the games over? This game isn't over yet! This game isn't over!" Tony had to kind of walk her away into the coaches huddle. Not in a bad way.

But boy, does Lauren have some fire in her.

Well, when your team scored 18 in about a minute to go from 9 down to up 9, and secure a win and regular season championship, I guess you develop a mentality that it ain't over till it's over!

She is really something fantastic. My appreciation and respect for her is jumping by leaps and bounds. She's nailing it in recruiting as well.

Actually, I think Tony has three strong assistants - but Lauren is number one. Fantastic stuff.

Isn't it wonderful? Man - they are the shining beacon right now and looking forward year over year.

Last year a number of us really amped up the cheering during the game - we synced right up again with the cheerleaders and brought the noise again.

I will be curious to find out what our new Coach, Coach Christian, thinks about the atmosphere - you know she came from Kentucky but I sure bet they didn't play in Rupp Arena and got no support - but you never know how it compares. I hope our "little Walsh" proves to be mightier than most imagine.

Really huge games coming up right away - Rutgers and Princeton - and we need absolutely everyone on hand to make a deafening noise for our team.
