Incoming freshman LaTecia Smith ranks 86th in the Top 100 2015 rankings on ESPN

Two things you have to like about this commit. First a very talented, top 100 player at a key position and then , of course, Tony's geographic footprint is not just locally but nationally. Tony's is building the program the right way and the program appears to have a very bright future.t

Tony is building this one planned step at a time. Now we've got to find the marquee big girl -or one with that klnd of potential. I'll bet this happens for the season after this.

She better be up there. Smith was on the L.A. Times All-Star Girls Basketball Team. (They don't do first and second teams.)

I think Smih could have been the L.A. player of the year. That honor, however, went to a UConn recruit. Smith was also the L.A. City Section player of the year.

L.A. is a hotbed of basketball. Any player recognized by the Times is a top caliber talent who is likely to contribute to a team from her freshman season.

Smith's team could have advanced further in their state championship. They were penalized because they wore pink uniforms to support breast cancer research. That was ridiculous.

BTW, I believe the 6-1 Taylor Byrne is seriously underrated. She is definitely a four-star. She comes in with serious skills and will get better every season. Every player seems to get better with this coaching staff.

Man, I didn't realize that the top-ranked player on the ESPN list is Katie Lou Samuelson. She's the UConn recruit I referred to who was the player of year for the L.A. Times.

Kennedy Burke, another 5-star who is ranked 15th, is also on the Times' list.

Smith is in good company.

Another women's recruit was recognized... Here's what the NY Daily News had to say today about Ashanae McLaughlin:

McLaughlin was the key force for the Lady Blazers, leading them to the PSAL ‘AA’ semifinals by posting a PSAL-high average of 22 points, six rebounds and five assists per game. The Seton Hall-bound guard could hurt opponents from all over the floor, whether finishing on the fast break or with her perimeter shooting.

If the bigs come through with the rebounding and contribute just a few PPG, I believe the Pirates can again win 20-plus games, compete for a BE title and play in the NCAA.

Ummm... I don't know if you realized this but Connecticut's First 8 players are always made up of some combination of the Top 15 recruits in any given recruiting class. Seton Hall's best player is #86 in the Top 100. How is the Hall ever gonna win a title in the women's game?

I said they could compete for a Big East title. I said nothing about an NCAA title.

BTW, many of these rankings are based on the school the player is going to and local reports rather than reality. As I continue to point out, there's simply no way the people running the web sites have seen all these recruits play games in person.

I'll give you an example: McLaughlin was rated 4-stars on ESPN. Literally on the same day she commited to SHU, she was dropped to 3-stars. (I did a double-take on that one.) I know that because I had checked her status several times in the days and weeks before she committed.

There is, of course, no doubt about the caliber of the UConn recruits.

I believe at least a couple of SHU's recruits are underrated.

400, man that is pretty darned sucky. It reeks of the standard management lies regarding performance ratings and compensation.

It's still very hard to be a first tier women's team. UConn is a class by itself. Then ND, Baylor, Tennessee etc follow right behind- second tier.

But our program is very close to that level right below them.

Amazing job as Tony goes into his third season.

Last week I posted a SHU commitment for Bozzella on the Trove. The name hasn't come out yet. It's possible that another player is coming as well.

The school should be announcing the new recruit(s) this month.

Is it Jayla Jones-Pack who was recently listed by ESPN as a player considering SHU? How about Alyssa Alson? Both are from Long Island.

No on both. The info is for our pay subscribers so for now it must remain there.

I agree with this, 64. Prior to Tony, we were absolutely not in that level right below the primary second tier. We have the possibility to crack that second tier under Bozzella, which is an exceptional hope. Yes - hope - not expectation - but the hope is not unfounded.

Dan is that the 2 guard we had a thread about a while ago? With video? If so, she could do a ton.

We know the coaching is in place, we know Tony is in control of his locker-room , we know Tony is honest with his players and has their best interests at heart and the only limiting factor in cracking that second tier is the caliber of the talent he brings in.

Perfectly said 80. We need a female Mark Bryant. Size seems to be the difference between us and the level above.
So exciting to have a program on the move.

I saw Jordan Molyneaux play one exhibition game last year prior to the red-shirt decision (or prior to it being announced). She can leap and she has a fantastic sense of where to place her hands to block and deflect. She's a sweet person (had a long conversation with her and got that sense), so I'm hoping that she was blowing smoke my way and that there is a fierceness underneath. I also hope for Lubirdia to get fierce this way as well. And then we'll have some "twin-tower" action for us down low. Very excited to see how they develop.

Agree Blue with you about Jordan and Lubirdia. Jordan told us how difficult it was to red shirt this year. She is known as a good aggressive player. If anyone saw Lubirdia AKA Birdie at the beginning of the season and then saw her playing at the end they would see a player with more confidence, better handling of position under the basket. better hands and much more physically fit.
