RIP 93

Initiated the state income tax but also instituted spending limits at this town and county level.

RIP Governor. I will miss his columns with Gov Kean talking about politics. The last few years I thought that both Governors points of view were valid and interesting. One of the few decent columns left on nj.com.

What is wrong with politics today is the polarization. Neither party has a monopoly of good or bad ideas. Governor's Byrne & Kean were not afraid of agreeing with the opposing party on certain issues that they thought would be beneficial to the State regardless of which side of the aisle that it came from.

One of my favorite political quotes was from Harry Truman who said " it is amazing how much can be accomplished if it does not matter who gets the credit". These two Governors fit that mold very well.

Tom, do you think either or both parties finally figure this out and nominate candidates that have these qualities? It's pretty obvious to most, why not the RNC and DNC?

A very good man - The first election I was able to vote in 1973, I voted for him. (He was honestly one of the few Democrats I have ever voted for in a general election.) My dad knew him personally as he was several years ahead of him in West Orange High School and he spoke very highly of him. His brother Francis was my general doctor in my teens with his office located on Park Avenue in West Orange, just around the corner on Main Street from where I grew up.

From what I remember, the State of New Jersey, from 1974 though 1982 was in a somewhat calm, after the Vietnam war, good state. I think he had allot to do about that. I got to know him personally in an odd way. He would shop on his own in his later years in a very unassuming way, in the Livingston Shop Rite. On occasion, I would would be in the store doing a company demo. We would talk about my father, whom he remembered and his brother Francis, whom of course he remembered. They really were very nice conversations. A very good soul - May he rest forever in peace! GO BRENDAN! GO PIRATES!

In today's political climate probably not. I think one problem is talk radio & the internet. People just listen to what they already agree with & ignore all else. Reinforcing the idea that "we" are always right and "they" are always wrong.
