In the wake of UCLA's departure to the Big Ten alongside USC, California Gov. Gavin Newsom said Wednesday he demands an explanation, on behalf of the public, for just how the move will be beneficial for not just student-athletes but the history of the Bruins' partnership with UC Berkeley.

"The first duty of every public university is to the people -- especially students," Newsom said, according to the Los Angeles Times, at Wednesday's meeting of the University of California Board of Regents in San Francisco. "UCLA must clearly explain to the public how this deal will improve the experience for all its student-athletes, will honor its century-old partnership with UC Berkeley, and will preserve the histories, rivalries, and traditions that enrich our communities."

UCLA said it would not comment on Newsom's remarks on Wednesday.

The announcement by UCLA and USC last month that they would move to the Big Ten in 2024 was a shock to the college football world, as it strengthened one conference and left the Pac-12 and its members in a vulnerable position. The Pac-12 has since announced it is willing to expand and will begin negotiations for a new media rights agreement. While USC is a private institution, UCLA's status as a public school raised eyebrows regarding the move as a school under the University of California system.

"I read about it. Is it a good idea? Did we have a chance to discuss the merits [of the decision]?" Newsom told Fox 11 Los Angeles last week. "I'm not aware anyone did. So it was done in isolation. It was done without regental oversight or support. It was done without any consideration to my knowledge."

The University of California said decisions related to athletics are executed at the campus level.

"UCLA leadership informed [University of California] President [Dr. Michael] Drake that discussions between UCLA and the Big Ten were occurring but he was not involved at all in those discussions or in any negotiations," a spokesperson for the University of California Office of the President told ESPN in an email. "... Decisions related to athletics are formulated and executed at the campus level. There is no requirement for a decision from the University of California Board of Regents or the Office of the President."

The financial benefits that come with a move to the Big Ten are evident; chief among them is what is expected to be an exorbitant TV rights deal, which would help UCLA overcome what has been reported to be a three-year debt of more than $100 million. It also would allow UCLA to keep Olympic sports.

"I inherited a deficit with UCLA athletics," Bruins AD Martin Jarmond told ESPN following the announced move to the Big Ten. "So when you have a significant financial challenge, it's difficult to just maintain, never mind to invest. This move not only preserves the programs we have now but also allows us to invest in them in levels that can lead to more competitive success."

In statements following the announcement of the move, Jarmond and UCLA Chancellor Gene Block also cited more exposure -- and thus more name, image and likeness opportunities for UCLA athletes -- as one of the various reasons why the program made the move to the Big Ten.

Yet despite UCLA's ability to make this decision on its own, Newsom appears to believe that the ripple effect could be as damaging for UC Berkeley -- which will inevitably receive less money as the Pac-12's media deal diminishes in value -- as it will be beneficial for UCLA.

According to the Times, an idea that has been floated includes the regents imposing an exit fee that UCLA would have to pay to UC Berkeley or, in another case, having UCLA share the ensuing Big Ten TV revenue windfall with UC Berkeley.

This will become political quickly, so I'll get my comment in before the thread is locked.

How on God's green earth do these public universities run at such large deficits, without any repercussions from the taxpayers who pay for this waste? UCLA with a deficit of $100,000,000+ , Rutgers with a deficit of $100,000,000+.

We support a private university that operates at a huge disadvantage to public universities, at our expense. I'm sick of this misuse of my money.

We have more important things to pay for and this BS has got to stop!

Unfortunately, I don't think the average taxpayer even gets this.

Will be interesting to see how much power/influence the governor has on this. When Va Tech was in the Big East, fleetingly, I recall the VA governor pressuring UVA to use its influence to get the Hokies into the ACC.

UCLA is a state school. How does its abandoning of the PAC 12 aid California? Don't know how much pull he has--- it sounds like a done deal ---- but good for him.

Most valid question he's asked in years. Broken clock's are right twice a day. Shame that he got right in the grand scheme of things this is one of the most trivial issues he's facing.

Seems UCLA did not take note of Rutgers larger deficit since their move to the little ten. Seems UCLA and Rutgers piss money away at the same rate and just don’t care because they see the taxpayers as an endless supply of cash they aren’t responsible for.

yeah, but what’s his angle? This is all about TV revenue. Newsome is the typical Democrat control freak who thinks the government should be making decisions like this. I don’t see what value he adds except he wants to be involved and have his fingerprints on something. Does he have the right to be informed on whether or not this is in the best interest of tax payers in state of Cal; sure. If he’s anticipating this is going to cost the taxpayers more in the long run (similar to what we’re seeing with RU) Via increased Travel costs, fair question.

But let’s remember, this guy has been abysmal for the state of California on a number of levels.

simple solution .cut off the state support for athletics and force these schools to live within whatever revenue these deals bring in..

I live in California and believe me Newsome is an empty suit, poser and lightweight. This objection to UCLA is just for the media to cover his ass. He's not going to push it as he has too many influential UCLA alumni donors.

The three highest paid public employees in NJ:

- Greg Schiano - Rutgers $4,000,000/year
- Steve Pikiell - Rutgers $2,600,000/year
- Robert Barchi - Rutgers $777,000/year

All grossly overpaid, Rutgers never should have left the A10!

The almighty Gov Newsome sticking his nose into something he shouldn’t. Shocker.

He’s the joker who let the NIL cat out of the bag.
I’m certainly no Newsom fan but why shouldn’t he be involved in his own states’ public institutions of higher learning?
Knowing where you stand on matters political, I salute you for saying this. Frankly, I am no great Newsom fan either but good for him for taking such a strong position on the matter.

I’m curious if anyone addressed what the athletes life will look like. Footballs easy one day a week. Baseball is easy it’s generally weekends. Everything else is basically a mess. Board a plane on Tuesday to go play Maryland. Stay on the east coast for 4 days to play Rutgers Saturday or will they fly back in between and travel more than the lakers will over 82 games? The beautiful sunny weather looks great but when you travel that much and you’re constantly adjusting your body to different time zones multiple times each week, it’s going to be grueling.

The Athletic recently did a nice workup on what a potential Big 12-Pac 12 merger would have looked like adding two more teams to get to 24.

Essentially when you get to that size, travel can become less of an issue because you can set up four divisions of six and pretty much play teams in your half of the country and make maybe one trip to the other half. It's not dissimilar to what the professional leagues currently do.

I'm not in favor of any of this but I can see there being a pathway to a reasonable solution with travel.

Translation of newsom: "I'm butthurt this happened without me having a clue and without my permission. Also for, once again, looking like I was asleep on the job with my pants down."

As someone born and now residing once again in California, I can confidently say newsom demands much, and consistently delivers very little. I'm actually surprised he had time to fit in these comments between bailing out the truly sinister and incompetent pg&e, letting the state go to pieces around him and working tirelessly on his pathetic quest for the White House. As far as current governors go, he is pretty much the epitome of "do as I say, not as I do".

Right now I am totally disillusioned with both sides of the aisle, but I gotta say it would be an absolute shame for this man to get into the White House.

Just my two cents....
