Carino on Big East & Willard

Interesting question?

If Willard had stayed at SHU would this year have been the disaster it was?

I don't think so because I think he was experienced, connected and smart enough to see the impact of NIL in advance and would have convinced the University leadership to get out in front of it.

I do love seeing the Maryland fans having a breakdown now that the show is on the other foot.
With the added bonus of them not currently having an AD so they’ll have to get that in place first before they can look for a new coach!

Nova is probably a better fit for Willard. He's not a flashy guy.
One thing i can share with you that the Nova Trustees had concerns on with Kevin, is Villanova leadership (clergy and laity) have always had a TIGHTLY aligned communication flow; and know Kevin has always has been unfiltered with the press, big east officials, amd the school admin.

That said they realize he is a solid choice, especially after the last 3 years, post Wright.

At least we have a target amount.

Of course Villanova, without a FBS football program, can and will use more of its revenue share on basketball, with the expectation it could spend upwards of $6 million.

In a first year that ended in a 71-53 NCAA Tournament Round of 32 loss to Alabama in 2023, new Maryland coach Kevin Willard had complaints. Plenty of them.

He was quick to tell anyone who would listen how much better things were in the Big East, the league he had just left after 12 seasons at Seton Hall. The scheduling, the travel, the emphasis on college basketball above all else.

Neptune was a really bad hiring decision and he performed poorly. Villanova coaching history shows that the school does not fire coaches very often. Times have changed, but Willard timing coming into the job sets him up for success.

If Willard had stayed at SHU it would have been because the University was going to get out in front on NIL.

The next two to three years will be like a glimpse of alternate reality of what could have been if SHU had NIL resources and Willard (and Grant) stayed and continued instead of left.
