Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore Khadeen Carrington (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Seton Hall men’s basketball team, but George Washington shot 48 percent from the field and made nearly 80 percent of its free throws as the Colonials came away with a 72-64 win over the Pirates Wednesday night in a hard-fought game at the Smith Center.
The defeat snaps a three-game winning streak for the Pirates (5-2), who had won five of their first six games. George Washington improved to 7-1 on the year.
Carrington was 8-for-16 from the field and 5-for-6 from the free throw line in surpassing his previous career high of 20, originally set vs. Butler last season, matched at Marquette last season and matched again just this past Saturday against Georgia.
Turning Point
After a back-and-forth first half that featured two ties and eight lead changes, the Colonials, sporting a four-point lead, made every basket it needed to while answering every Pirates basket. When The Hall got within one on Carrington’s layup at 17:55, the Colonials turned the ball over, but the Pirates couldn’t capitalize as they turned the ball over themselves. Kevin Larsen followed with a paint jumper, starting a 6-0 run to push the lead back to seven, 46-39.
The teams just traded baskets and free throws for the next six minutes; the Pirates were either down five or down seven as they kept finding baskets but ultimately kept giving them up too.
The Pirates never went away though, finally getting within three points, 62-59, after sophomore Isaiah Whitehead (Brooklyn, N.Y.) nailed a floater with 2:44 to go. The rally was short-lived though as Paul Jorgensen buried a three-pointer with under 10 left on the shot clock on the next possession to make it a six-point game and effectively ending it.
