LAFAYETTE, LA. – Kelsey Carr provided a three-run home run and pitched six innings of one-run ball as the Pirates (2-1) defeated Longwood, 5-3, on Saturday morning at Yvette Girouard Field on the Pirates' final day of the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics.

How it Happened

In their first game of the day, the Pirates came out swinging. Katey Brennan opened the game with a single, followed not long after by Kelsey Carr collecting one of her own. A ground out would put two outs on the board, but the Pirates found their way onto the scoreboard in a big way. A single down the left side from Erin Howard, drove Brennan home to put the Pirates up 1-0. Andrea Perez, who entered the day reaching base in all but one at-bat this season, singled up the middle to score Carr and put the Pirates up 2-0 by the end of the first inning.

Back on the mound after an Opening Day win, Carr pitched a clean 1-2-3 first inning before running into minor opposition in the second. A lead-off double by the Lancers turned into a run on a sacrifice fly, but their scoring in the inning would end there. Carr would allow two more baserunners, but kept Longwood from plating more runs as the teams headed to the third inning.

The Lancers' threatened to tie the game in the third inning, but a pair of Pirates combined to prevent any scoring. Amber Johnson collected a the ball after Longwood double into center field, fired it to Jesscia Muniz who then relayed it to Howard behind the plate for the out.

After that test of fate, the Pirates' bats came alive in the fifth inning. Brennan laced a one-out single into center field, which Taylor Hill quickly followed up with a walk to put runners on first and second with one out. Carr stepped to the plate, already pitching a gem in the circle, and took the game into her own hands. The graduate student crushed a three-run home run to right field to put Pirates up four, 5-1, and forcing the Lancers to make a pitching change.

After returning to the mound in the bottom half of the inning, Carr initially seemed like she would end the inning with little issue. However, she quickly faced a bases-loaded, two out dilemma. Calm and collected, Carr forced a ground ball to end the inning and held Longwood off once again.

As the game reached the bottom of the sixth, Rachael Schumann entered the game to spell Carr after five high-intensity innings. Despite giving up a solo home run, the freshman worked her way out of the inning, holding the Pirates' lead steady at three runs, 5-2. With the Pirates failing to find any more offensive in the top of the seventh, they headed back out for the bottom of the frame looking to secure the win. After the Lancers earned another run back, The Pirates found themselves in a bases-loaded, no outs situation with a 5-3 lead. With the game on the line, Carr returned to the mound looking to secure the win. She retired the next three batters, in order, securing a 5-3 win for the Pirates.

Pirates Suffer First Loss of Season Against George Mason

LAFAYETTE, LA. – Hannah Alexander provided two RBI as the Pirates (1-1) suffered their first loss of the season against George Mason, 7-2, on Friday afternoon at Yvette Girouard Field on the second day of the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics.

How it Happened
All eyes were on the circle at the start of the game when Pirates freshman Rachael Schumann began her first career collegiate start in the Pirates' second game of the season. She faced trouble in the opening inning, allowing a pair of runs, but escaped the inning without further damage. After a clean second inning, George Mason added another two runs to put the Pirates down 4-0 through three innings.

As the top of the fourth arrived, Kyra Kreuscher came into the game to take over for the freshman. By the end of the fourth inning, the Patriots held a 7-0 advantage over the Pirates as they continued to search for an answer at the plate.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Pirates were on the precipice of scoring. A pair of singles from Katey Brennan and Taylor Hill gave The Hall two runners on with no outs. After two fly ball outs, Hannah Alexander got the Pirates on the board with an two-run single. Those were Alexander's first RBI in over 18 months since missing last season with a shoulder injury. Another single, this time from Andrea Perez, allowed the Pirates the opportunity to draw even closer. A pop out, however, wrapped up the inning and ended the Pirates' run.

With a do-or-die seventh inning approaching, the Pirates turned to sophomore Karissa Dupuis to pitch in hopes of a Pirates comeback. Dupuis logged a scoreless inning, allowing the Pirates an opportunity to claw back the deficit in the final frame. A one-out single from Amber Johnson and a two-out walk from Hill presented the Pirates an eventful opportunity to draw the game even closer. A line out ended the game, however, and the Pirates fell to the Patriots 7-2.

LAFAYETTE, LA. – Despite getting 13 runners on base, the Pirates (2-2) fell to Louisiana, 9-1, on Saturday night at Yvette Girouard Field in the Pirates' final game at the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics.

How it Happened
The Pirates' second game against Louisiana began much like the first. At the end of the first inning, The Hall found themselves down 1-0 after the host Cajuns converted a leadoff single to an early advantage. A single in the top half of the second would put the Pirates in the scorebook, but a five-run bottom frame from Louisiana would send the Pirates to the third inning down 6-0.

In the top of the third, a Katey Brennan walk provided the Pirates with a momentary burst. However, Taylor Hill was thrown out at second base the following at bat, ending the Pirates chances in the third. The Pirates made a pitching change in the third, and Karissa Dupuis stranded two runners in a scoreless inning for the Pirates.

The fourth inning began with a leadoff Kelsey Carr walk, who had Angelina Benitez run for her, but the Pirates quickly found themselves in a two-out situation. Andrea Perez launched a two-out double down the line, giving the Pirates a strong chance to get on the scoreboard. Caroline Hobbes would help the Pirates get a run back when she hit a ball that forced the Cajun's third baseman to commit an error. With the Pirates deficit now at five, 6-1, and two runners on, the Pirates could still add more runs. A ground out would end the inning for the Pirates, however, and both sides would move on to the bottom of the inning.

The fifth inning saw the Pirates attempt to rally once again with two outs. Hill first singled to start the potential rally, with Carr battling her way to a walk in the next at-bat. The Pirates flied out in the next at bat, however, putting the onus on the pitching to maintain the gap. Dupuis kept the Pirates in the game, however, providing a 1-2-3 inning and sending The Hall to the sixth still facing a five-run deficit.

The Pirates once again had a chance at another rally in the sixth inning. Hannah Alexander led off the inning with a single, before Andrea Perez and Caroline Hobbes both reached base on fielder's choices. Jessica Muniz, who ran for Alexander, was thrown out as a result the former's at-bat, but Jenna Belvins walked to load the bases with one out. A double play would end another Pirates rally, however, leaving one more inning for the Pirates to draw the game even. They would never get the chance, however, as three runs by the Cajuns in the bottom of the sixth handed the Pirates a 9-1 loss.

News & Notes
  • Hill registered two hits in three of the Pirates four games.
  • Perez and Brennan reached base safely in all four games this weekend.
  • With a 2-2 weekend, the Pirates matched their best start to a season under Angie Churchill (2023).

LAFAYETTE, LA. – Olivia Gilbert knocked in two RBI, while Kelsey Carr tossed seven innings with one earned run as the Pirates picked up a win in their season opener against Louisiana, 4-2, on Thursday night at Yvette Girouard Field in the opening game of the 39th Annual Louisiana Classics.

How it Happened
The pitchers from both teams were tested in the opening innings, but the Ragin' Cajuns ultimately found the lead first. In the bottom of the first, Emily Smith put Louisiana in front 1-0 after knocking a solo home run to left field after a nine-pitch at bat. Both sides traded quick second innings before the Pirates broke through in the third.

Katey Brennan and Kelsey Carr both drew walks, serving up an opportunity for Olivia Gilbert to clear the deck with two outs. Gilbert took advantage of a good pitch, driving it to right-center field, bringing both runners home and putting the Pirates up 2-1 through three innings. Now with run support and some strong defensive play all over the field, Carr retired the next six Cajuns in order to send the Pirates to the top of the fifth.

When the fifth inning arrived, the Pirates stretched Louisiana's pitching past its breaking point. Caroline Hobbes singled, Brennan earned her third walk of the game and Taylor Hill singled to load the bases with no outs. A force out at home would only delay the inevitable, as a bases loaded walk and a sacrifice fly from Erin Howard put the Pirates up 4-1 through the top of the fifth.

As Carr's pitch count eclipsed 100 pitches in the bottom of the sixth, Louisiana appeared to find their way back into this game. A single and an error allowed two early baserunners, stressing the Pirates' lead in the closing stages of the game. The Hall collected two quick outs, but a single by the Cajuns' Cecilia Vasquez drew the hosts within 2, 4-2. Despite allowing a walk right after, a fly out got Carr out of trouble and sent the Pirates to the seventh still protecting a two-run lead.

Seton Hall failed to add another run in the top of the inning, leaving it on Carr to close out the game. She would once again keep the first two batters off the bases, but quickly found herself with the bases loaded and needing one out needed to end the game. Carr ended up forcing the next batter to pop out to first, securing a 4-2 victory for the Pirates.
