Catalon, Pirates Roll Jefferson in Season Tune-up, 87-61

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. – Sophomore Savannah Catalon (Mansfield, Texas) scored a game-high 22 points as the Seton Hall women's basketball team routed Jefferson, 87-61, in exhibition action on Saturday in Walsh Gym.

After starting the game 1-for-9 from three-point range, The Hall shot 12-for-26 the rest of the way, including five made three-pointers by Catalon and five more from Seton Hall newcomer Nicole Melious (Staten Island, N.Y.). The Pirates led wire-to-wire in this one, holding a 28-point lead at the half.

Graduate students Yaya Lops (Stamford, Conn.) and Faith Masonius (Spring Lake, N.J.) scored 11 points apiece. Lops also added a team-best six rebounds and two blocks. Masonius had four rebounds and six assists.

THE STORY:
Seton Hall dominated the contest from the start, starting the game with a 8-0 run over the first 2:57. Leading 11-6, the Pirates took off again, this time a 9-0 burst, and a three-point play by Messiah Hunter (Hopewell, Va.) put them on top, 20-6, with 3:19 left in the first quarter. In the second, Seton Hall shot 50 percent from the floor and connected on four of its last eight three-pointer attempts. The Hall finished the half with an 11-0 run to take a commanding 52-24 lead into halftime.

Jefferson went on a 9-0 run in the third quarter to cut its deficit to 63-42, but the Rams weren't able to cut into Seton Hall's lead any further. Catalon scored 12 of her team-best 22 points after the break and The Hall cruised to victory with all 11 available players seeing at least five minutes of action.

THE NUMBERS:
  • Seton Hall was 30-for-66 (45.5%) from the floor for the game, while Jefferson was 24-for-57 (42.1%). The Hall was 13-for-35 (37.1%) from three-point range, while the Rams were 2-for-9 (22.2%).
  • Catalon was 7-for-12 from the floor, including 5-for-8 from three-point range for a game-high 22 points. She also had four rebounds and four assists.
  • The Hall out-rebounded Jefferson, 39-to-32, which included a 16-to-11 edge on the offensive glass.
  • Melious was 5-for-11 from three-point range for 15 points. She also grabbed four rebounds.
  • Seton Hall was 14-for-17 (82.4%) from the free-throw line, while Jefferson was 11-for-15 (73.3%).
  • Lops had 11 points and team-highs of six rebounds and two blocks.
  • Seton Hall forced 19 turnovers, while the Rams forced 13. The Hall had a 12-to-10 advantage in points-off-turnovers.
  • Masonius had 11 points on 5-for-8 shooting with four rebounds and six assists.
  • The Pirates had 12 fast-break points, compared to none for Jefferson.
  • Hunter finished with nine points.
  • Graduate student Amari Wright (Jacksonville, Fla.) didn't score, but she grabbed five rebounds and dished out a game-high seven assists with only two turnovers.

THE NOTES:
  • During a halftime ceremony, the Seton Hall men's basketball team unveiled its 2024 NIT Championship banner and the 2024-25 team was introduced.
