Chris Herren at SHU

Addiction can screw you up. No matter who it is. Glad this kid is still alive and working to do good. His story was featured on an ESPN 30/30. When you screw around too much, you are walking a tightrope with no net. Most don't fall into the abyss like Chris did, but imo, who does fall is all luck and the person has no control over it.

My Dad owned taverns most of his life and spent too much time in them. He was a great Dad but he drank more than was healthy, he never drank at home, and being younger I never noticed it. But in retrospect, I can see how it was.

The Dad of one of my best friends in grammar school did the same thing. He took care of his family, was a good husband, drank too much. But it got hold of him and he became literally a Bowery Bum.

He owned a big house on the river in a shore town, had a bunch of great kids, a beautiful wife - the American dream. And one night when in HS, I went to a Mets game, and as I walked around Penn Station, I saw him sleeping on the ground on 8th Avenue.

Maybe there is more reasons than I know of that kept my Dad a functioning, loving human and let my friend's Dad go under. But as I see it, it was about luck.

Two men did the same thing, one fell and his life went splat, one stayed on the tightrope. If you feel you are walking that tightrope, climb down. My Dad died when I was 14. When I thought maybe I am doing the same thing as he did, I looked back to that time in July 1969 when he laid in his hospital bed unconscious and said enough. My friends said you don't have any problem. They may have been right. But it was not worth the risk.

I was riveted when I watched his 30 for 30 special. Unbelievable story and hopefully a prime lesson on how drugs can screw up your life. Unbelievable for this guy that his wife and family stuck with him through everything.

Great opportunity for our kids to hear his story. His ESPN 30 for 30 was a great documentary.
