Winston-Salem, N.C. -- Seton Hall Men's Basketball Radio Network duo Gary Cohen and Dave Popkin have been named National Sports Media Association Sportscasters of the Year for the states of New York and New Jersey, respectively, the organization announced Tuesday.
Cohen is now a three-time New York NSMA Sportscaster of the Year for his work on SNY with the New York Mets while Popkin was tabbed New Jersey Sportscaster of the Year for the first time. Now in their 22nd season together calling Seton Hall men's basketball games, Cohen and Popkin are believed to be the first radio duo to earn this prestigious honor from the NSMA in the same year.
The NSMA will honor its award winners and Hall of Fame inductees during the organization's 65th awards weekend and national convention, to be held this summer in North Carolina.
Popkin is entering his 22nd year as the color commentator and back-up play-by-play announcer for Seton Hall men's basketball. Popkin is also entering his 25th year as the TV voice of the Northeast Conference and has called college basketball for most of the local schools and conferences. He has over 25 years of baseball announcing experience, including selected games for the Buffalo Bisons (Toronto - Triple A) for the last eleven years. He has appeared on many major TV sports networks including: FS1, CBS Sports Network, NBC Sports Network, ESPNU, YES, SNY, YES, MASN, NESN, and more. He is the creator and co-host of Crashing the Boards, a weekly college hoops talk show on FOX Sports Radio New Jersey.
Cohen, well-known in the area as the play-by-play voice of the New York Mets on SNY, is one of the most respected and accomplished play-by-play announcers in the nation. Cohen recently completed his 36th year broadcasting Mets baseball, 19 seasons on television and 17 on the radio. In addition, the Queens native and Columbia University graduate was the radio voice of St. John's basketball from 1995-2002. On a national level, Cohen has also called baseball broadcasts for CBS and ESPN Radio & has handled play-by-play duties for CBS Radio & Westwood One for the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament.
Alongside Cohen and Popkin is radio engineer Mike Infantino, who is in his 36th season working broadcasts for Seton Hall men's basketball games.
