Coleman on the move?

College basketball is dead.
I don’t know what it is now. Professional sports have order to them like player contracts and structure to spending with competitive balance in mind bc it’s supposed to be a freaking sport and league.

This is annual free agency with endless spending and it’s insane. There won’t be a sport there will be divisions based on money at some point.

Not even two months ago we were told Coleman "will be taken care of" and not go the path of Samuel, Davis, and Richmond. Just more evidence to always take things with a grain of salt.
When anyone here says that you can guarantee the exact opposite will happen. EVERY SINGLE TIME!

We are all maybe bypassing the idea that he just wants to get out of town. After this past year, could you blame him for seeking something better?
Yup this year was tough. Does he really want to risk having another year like this? If I was his parents and agent those are the things I'd be talking to him about. Hurts for us but this is what happens when you crap the bed. Could be an uphill battle to rebuild our program with $ or not.

Everyone needs to take their SHU glasses off and ask yourself would you come back if you were Coleman? Like Piratz pointed out, he just spent the past season playing on the worst team in the conference in front of 3-5K fans at home. SHU isn't exactly a hot commodity when it comes to campus life. And it's highly unlikely SHU is going to offer him significantly more than these other schools and make the deal too good to pass up.

With that said, I don't have a problem with him moving on. He can't be our highest paid player and expect the team to be competitive. He's the 3rd best player on a good team, IMO. If we have the budget for one impact player I would prefer it go elsewhere, so I think this is a win-win for everyone.

Please tell me this is totally unreal in the next few years:

Players sign contracts with universities as employees thereof.
As employees, players argue/sue/ win decision that academic requirements are an unfair hindrance to their making livings.
Also, eligibility limits are cruel and unusual; they can stay and play as long as universities want and hire them?

I understand and accept that players will come and go because of money now but we shouldn’t be losing our best players because they’re unhappy here. To me that’s an even bigger problem since we have a payroll now apparently

When your coach is calling you lazy and selfish after games to the press and screaming obscenities at you all game in front of 3-5k people who can literally hear him cursing you out basically, would you want to come back?

That's where a competent sales team comes in. Match or exceed the other offers and tell him to go one more year with us. We will feature him and get him on an All Big East team. We will invest in the program and buy him a real supporting cast. He will be the man at Seton Hall, rather than a supporting player somewhere else. He knows the system. He knows the coach. He knows the league. The fans know him and support him. If it doesn't work out, he still has a year left to maximize his earnings elsewhere. If it works out, he (unlike most other college players in this era) will have a place to come back for the rest of his life.

Agreed. Selling the opportunity and selling the Head Coach still has a big role in this IMO.

FWIW, someone sent me something from Trilly today that projected Creighton as having $7M in NIL next year, inclusive of course of how they allocate the projected revenue sharing, which he said would put them near the top of the league.

Also, Braziller has an article today behind a paywall about St John's NIL. Someone sent me a clip from the article they were able to access which says that SJU does not have a player making over $1M this year, but has 5 players making several hundred thousand to high-six figures. Again, I don't know the accuracy or legitimacy behind the numbers, because that contradicts what's been reported here by some concerning Kadary.

Whether he stays or not is much less important than who Sha brings in next season to right the ship. There is a lot of work to be done and losing a 6'5" small forward is not the issue. We need a strong player at the 5 spot, power forward and point guard among other things.

Good points but we can’t continue to be the team that develops its best player & then lose them in the portal. Need them to want to stay, both financially & emotionally.

I read the article. It had some interesting points and it details what they learned from Year 1 in the Portal to Year 2.

- Pitino said they were totally unprepared for the Portal when he was hired and they learned that the majority of the Portal work is done in January (direct quote from Masiello). Between Yr 1 and 2 they hired a GM (Abdelmassih).

- By January you need to have a strong idea who is coming back, who is available to target and exactly what type of players or attributes you are looking for. Pitino gives his staff what to look for......Length, athleticism and motor were prioritized for this season.

- Pitino never negotiates money. He makes his basketball pitch to recruits but his GM is constantly talking to Agents and handlers all year round. He handles all negotiations with money. and the constant back and forth. His assistant coaches are the primary recruiters. Based on Rick's wants and attributes, they identify the players they like, communicate with them, plan the visits and execute the visits. But Abdelmassih is the guy who is the most persistent - constantly selling to the families and agents and closing on players.

- Said the Portal is about striking the balance between patience and waiting too long. And that's where it's important to have knowledge of the marketplace. They were patient and got Kadary and Smith fairly late in the process.

- Moneywise, it says they had $4 Million and like you said, no one made over $1 Million. Talks about Repole stepping up and meeting with their BOR and President Rev. Shanley. He gave more money because he felt invested in St.John's, etc.. It claims that St Johns NIL is #1 in the Big East and top 15 in the country.

The article shows what an effective process looks like in managing this crazy landscape, which is not changing. Can you imagine Seton Hall having that type of integrated-yet-clear functionality? We can't even get our social media thumping. We have had one guy trying to coach and develop the team while also making all the decisions on player acquisition for the next year, often simultaneously

On NIL, I still would like to know if multi-year contracts are already part of this around the country or maybe that's an area we'll get to. Amazing what was once a major punishment is now allowed. Massive change in 3-4 years.

What's also nuts is players like Coleman ready to move but still playing for their current team simply to avoid tampering charges.

Val Ackerman said that multi-year contracts are not a thing because then you’re talking about players being employees, labor laws, and more bs. That’s not to say it’s not being done, but clearly players are allowed freedom of movement and contracts would impede on that.

I also want to know why we are promoting new sweatshirts that say “basketball.” Who the hell thought that was a good idea? We just don’t get it. Creating new punch lines on a near weekly basis. Can you imagine wearing that thing and sitting next to a St. John’s fan at MSG next week? The jokes just keep writing themselves.

So....pretty much the opposite of what we are doing in nearly all regards?

While the overreaching NCAA policy is freedom of movement, it prevents individuals from choosing to sign deals too?
