Changing the subject for a moment........to nuture what sanity we SHU fans have left...........I was very impressed by the postgame remarks of Dave Popkin and Gary Cohen and their radio interview of Shaheen Holloway. As you may know the Big East requires all head coaches to be in the official BET press conference after every tournament game, so Kevin Willard simply could not be available for the radio interview and Shaheen sat in for him.

Before and after Shaheen arrived, Cohen and Popkin were appropriately critical of pretty much every aspect of the team's performance and did NOT spout any "party-line", "homer" remarks. Then, when Holloway got there, Gary Cohen, in particular, was even tougher (albeit politely and professionally) than he typically would be with Kevin Willard.

However, last night was not just any loss. The nature, magnitude, finality and apparent effort displayed called for a more rigorous interview and Cohen stepped up to that challenge..............not to pick on Shaheen but because the circumstances required that the coaching staff's representative be called on the carpet.

One reason he may have been so aggressive last night could be that Gary was confident that Shaheen could handle the situation. As challenging as Cohen's questions were, Shaheen's reactions and answers were, under the circumstances, quite excellent as well.................certainly about as good as could reasonably be expected, given the results Shaheen was being asked to explain.

Without remembering the exact questions, I recall that one of Cohen's first questions was a real haymaker..............and, to their mutual credit, both Cohen and Holloway "let their conversation breathe" through a two......... or maximum three........... second silence before Shaheen delivered a responsive, cogent and intelligent answer that did not excuse what happened last night but did not leave any embarrassed victims underneath any buses.

Cohen was then able to effectively follow-up without appearing to "badger" Shaheen and both gentlemen performed their necessary duties at what I considered to be a high level of performance.

Gary Cohen has been recognized as an outstanding performer in his field for many years, so no surprises there.

However, with respect to Mr. Holloway, I viewed what I heard last night as a real measure of professional growth. The Shaheen Holloway of three or more years ago would not have done as well, IMO and I would have had concerns about how well he'd come across in such a situation. No such concerns last night........and the fact that he went down the road he did suggests that Cohen, who knows Shaheen much better than I ever will.............harbored no such concerns either.................since I doubt that Gary would have wanted to trigger any dialogue that would only serve to make anyone appear to be foolish or make himself appear to be bullying anyone.

Just three experienced professionals (Cohen, Popkin and Holloway) doing their job well at a very trying time.

What does this portend for Shaheen ? From my perspective, you can simply cross "Media/Public Relations" off any list of reasons why Shaheen Holloway could NOT be a successful NCAA MBB Division I Head Coach/Program Manager. Does this mean that he should be a candidate to immediately replace his current boss ? I will leave that for others to debate, as to whether the pros of his contacts with returning players outweigh any preference for him to first get Head Coach experience on a stage smaller than the Big East.

For now, it's enough for me to be proud, as a Seton Hall fan, of whatever SHU may have contributed to Shaheen Holloway's development, either from his years as a student or his years as an employee. Even our downtrodden present Head Coach Willard (from his time at both Iona and SHU) can be justifiably proud of Shaheen's current growth and expected future development during and after his time as Kevin's subordinate.

Those are my positive thoughts on what otherwise comes across as a sad time for the team from South Orange.

Better days are coming.......................

Wow, that's a great post, pat5389. I wasn't able to hear the interview, so I have none of my own opinions on the exchange, but what you describe is so interesting, and a but heartening, too.

Yes, Cohen and Popkin are pros, and the way they perceive Shaheen is to be well noted. I'm so glad to hear our guy performed so well under very difficult circumstances. I'm going to see if this audio is available anywhere, because of love to hear it.

Outstanding post on many fronts.

I've saying in conversations that the one person I want to gain a great next foothold out of all this mess is Shaheen Holloway. I want him to succeed - that means leaving this dumpster fire of course.

This is just really heartwarming.

I don't want to see him leave. I'd have absolutely no problem with him taking over after next season. It's a crapshoot because he obviously has no HC experience but so is hiring MAAC coaches so why not take a chance on one of our own? In fact him not having HC experience would probably make him inexpensive enough to offset some of this now legendary buyout right now.

Listened for a second time and respectfully have to disagree. I love Sha, and while the style was somewhat different and definitely more pleasant than KW, the content was not. Truly sounded like a guy who has learned from his the head coach (as one expects he would) and I don't think the lessons are good ones. Familiar excuses and confusion.

Chickenpox,

Thanks for surfacing the audio.

I'd be honored to agree with you to disagree respectfully with each other about the performances of Cohen and Holloway.

I think that Shaheen was in an almost impossible spot, given the results on the court...................and please keep in mind that I am not excusing Shaheen from his share of responsibility for last night's game or this season's team record. As Associate Head Coach he SHOULD be held accountable on that front.

I'm only focusing on the relatively narrow element of Shaheen's Communications Skills..........particularly in comparison to his proficiency at such tasks four or so years ago.

With respect to Gary Cohen (if you DO disagree with my take on the critical nature of his comments, as well as those of Dave Popkin ?), I thought that Gary most definitely took on both the coaching staff and the players in a fair and appropriate way.

What Shaheen did that I found most impressive was to employ certain skills that are either inherently instinctive or the result of specific training and diligent hard work. These included elements of Active Listening, thoughtful articulation and strength of character. Sure, he came across as inexplicably disappointed by what had taken place (who wasn't within the SHU community and fan base) but he wasn't afraid to admit it in a clear and concise manner that did not attempt to shift blame to anyone else (beyond giving Marquette its due).

Shaheen listened to Gary's questions............took a second or two to gather his thoughts before answering, rather than blurting out a knee-jerk response..................and they provided an answer that was responsive to the original question..............without going off the reservation by way of a tangent that tried to shift topics and thus destroyed the cohesive flow of the interview.

You and other listeners may not have LIKED one or more of Shaheen's answers but they were, IMO, all delivered in a way that represented Shaheen well as a properly focused and clear speaker who knew what he was talking about.

Hopefully, this explanation helps you understand my reaction a bit better. If not, I'm at least glad that we both care enough about such matters..........and about Shaheen, as an SHU hero and grad..........to share our respective positions with this Board.

Thank you.
