The one question I still have is what was Lyon's involvement in the Willard contract extension. Some have said the Contract and the later extension were all on Hobbs (convenient, even if true, as he is departing). Piratesal identified the three who may have agreed to the contract extension without BOR formal approval. I understand and agree that Lyons has been an improvement over prior ADs, putting Willard aside, but the 3 BOR reps who agreed to the extension must have had been acting upon recommendations. The BOR is like a corporation; the top relies upon the VPs and lower to make recommendations and help evaluate the course of action. Of course Lyons didn't have the ability to signoff on the extension. But what was his role? Was he a proponent, and if so, why? It is inconceivable he did not have input into the extension and terms. This is my issue with Lyons and why we should never hired Willard's old boss to be his new boss. More significantly is the systemic management problems of our Flagship sport. What High Major program hires a coach without an AD in place. Your hire an AD for these skill/knowledge set. Who lets a law school dean, alumni and clergy dictate and evaluate candidates for high major (or pretending to be) basketball program. At least retain a specialist search firm. Also, our AD needs to have a basketball background not a college hockey background. If we are stuck with Willard due to the extension contract terms, and Lyons supported that extension, he should be gone.
Also I don't fault Estaban and the other BOR reps for trying to do the right thing. The Basketball coach is not their area of expertise. I suspect they were given very poor or suspect advice. That is what needs to be cleaned up before any moves are made as to Willard.
